| Delightful Home in Japan Displaying a Fresh Architecture Approach Posted: 13 Apr 2011 05:26 AM PDT Montblanc House was designed by Okazaki-based Studio Velocity and is located in a peaceful residential area in Japan. Even though the house was built on a tight site, surrounded by three other buildings, the architecture plan of the three-storey dwelling ensures “pockets of open space” and beautiful views of the nearby mountains. The home can be characterized by a strong indoor-outdoor connection achieved through asymmetrical voids in the walls which let in plenty of natural light. Seen on Designboom, Montblanc House features an eye-catching exterior design, due to its playful inclined roof, an intriguing architecture detail. The interiors are airy and spacious, enriched by a fresh small garden located on the first level, outdoor terraces and intriguing pieces of furniture. Simply delightful!

| Spacious Single Family Home in Germany designed by andOFFICE Posted: 13 Apr 2011 04:19 AM PDT The most important feature of a home is its ability to perpetually offer the feeling of a comfortable living space. According to the designer, “KUB+ Coffee table for small living rooms aims to bring functionality to living rooms with limited space, serving as a ludic and customizable furniture, allowing users to interact with the colored mobile pieces in addition to following the trend of assembling do-it-yourself and taking inspiration from the famous toy Rubik’s Cube. | 10 Ideas for Sprucing up your Front Entry for Spring Posted: 13 Apr 2011 12:08 AM PDT Spring is the perfect time to spruce up your home and renew it out of its cold winter slump. From bright spring colors on interior walls to updating old and worn out parts of your home, spring is the perfect 'excuse' for renewal. The area of your home that greets people first is your front entry. From the playful porch to the exterior lighting used to create safety and ambiance in the evening, your front entry could use spring sprucing as well. Here are 10 ideas for enlivening your front entry with touches of spring and renewal. 1.) Bring out the color: Whether your front door could use a new coat of paint or the trim around the adjacent windows could use a fresh new color. Your front entry is the ideal place to add color and whimsy. Consider using a front door color that contrasts the rest of your home: red, yellow, green, and orange are all popular "wow" colors for your front entry. 2.) Freshen up railings and stairs: If your front porch railings are looking drab, opt for new ones that are bolder and command more attention. If you like your current railings and stairs, decorate with spring hanging flower baskets and/or paint with a fresh coat of paint to bring freshness to the space. 3.) Modernize your exterior: Is the front of your home starting to look dated? Consider opting for updated amenities to make it look new and revived. Simple awnings, attractive fences and gates, or sun shades can immediately boost up the curb appeal of your home. 4.) Give your front entry attention: While this seems like an obvious one, your front entry is the most forgotten about space of your home. For once you are in your house, you forget about the space that welcomes your neighbors! Sweep up debris, dead leaves, and clean or pressure wash brick, siding or brick. 5.) Add functional lighting: Similarly to the interiors of your home, lighting fixtures can make your front entry look amazing at night, as well as keep your guest safe. Exterior lighting can range from single pendant lighting above the front door, or wall sconces that flank the sides of the door. If you have a garage, use similar lighting fixtures there as well. 6.) Plants add color and texture: Depending on how much space you have, plants will help your front entry look friendlier and it will mask much of your hardscape – sidewalks, stairs, and walkways. Consider adding plants in decorative urns along walkways, along stairs and in decorative pots at your front door. 7.) Spruce up patio furniture: For those of you, who have patio furniture at your front entrance, revive your furniture with brightly colored seat cushions to bring color and décor to your front entry. Cushions that still look good from last year can be hand washed and dried to perk up any front entrance. 8.) See what your neighbors are doing: Believe it or not, one of the best ways to get ideas and build neighborhood camaraderie is to collaborate about how they spruce up their front entries. Your neighbor may be delighted to give you pointers! 9.) Pull up a seat: Depending on the size of your front entry, consider adding colorful furniture for seating. From park benches, and cedar side tables, to wrought iron chairs or bistro style seating adjacent to a patio area. Colorful throw pillows in spring colored hues feel and look great. 10.) Create an oasis: Whether you only have space for a welcome doormat or you have a full porch to enjoy, create an oasis that you will love to come home to. Update your front door hardware, your wall mounted mailbox and even a fresh spring wreath to your door! Sprucing up your front entry can brighten up your home, and give your guests a fresh approach to your home, before they even enter. Determine what areas of your front entry you want to enhance. It doesn't all have to be done this weekend! Give yourself time to plan, and by the end of spring your front entry will be ready to welcome in the summer months! | Inventive Architecture Protecting the Inhabitant’s Privacy: House I by Yoshichika Takagi Posted: 12 Apr 2011 10:03 AM PDT Japanese architecture studio Yoshichika Takagi has completed the House I located in Akita City, Japan. With an undeniable inspirational architecture, the building lies in the middle of an urban area, surrounded by large commercial buildings. As you can see from the pictures, privacy was a problem when designing this structure. The architects had to be careful to keep a balance between the private parts of the residence and the public spaces. The interior of the building was thus created as a balanced and carefully studied space composition, with a semi-enclosed floor plan that protects the privacy of the inhabitants. The main rooms of the house – kitchen, bathroom, shower room, bedroom and storage – received a box-like enclosure, protected by exterior volumes that serve as courtyards and passageways. Windows were installed on the walls overlapping each other and the final result looks like a combination of facing mirrors. Neutral colours and a lot of natural light complete the architecture of this amazing residence. Ready for more amazing design ideas? Check below !

| Satelite Views of Las Vegas Showing 25 Years of Urban Development Posted: 12 Apr 2011 08:35 AM PDT
Las Vegas metropolitan area has suffered enormous change during the past decades. The images below are provided by NASA and show the development of this region from 1985 until 2009. "On March 1, 2009, NASA's Landsat 5 satellite turned 25. These images of the western portion of the Las Vegas metropolitan area show the city's steady spread into the adjacent desert landscape. Undeveloped land appears along the left edges of the top two images. Here, the land on the city's outskirts appears in shades of beige and tan, with just a hint of the street grid to come. By 1989, however, development filled the upper left corner—a residential area, complete with curving roads and semicircle streets. In subsequent images, development spreads southward, and by 2004, the entire image shows cityscape, including Interstate 215 passing through southwestern portion of the city." Impressive or what? | Interview: Turning a Vintage Trailer into Living Space with Matthew Hofmann Posted: 12 Apr 2011 07:28 AM PDT Matthew Hofmann from Hofmann Architecture recently completed a contemporary renovation of a vintage 1970′s Airstream trailer which currently serves as an efficient living and working space. Green thinking heavily influenced this project. This means that in the interview below you will be reading about quite a few ingenious sustainable ideas that stood at the basis of redesigning this trailer. Enjoy the amazing conversion below which we hope will trigger your need for renovating and improvising.
The Airstream uses an integrated propane heating system on colder nights. For cooling, the Airstream uses two large awnings on each side to shade windows from direct sunlight. Large open-able, screened windows promote ample cross-ventilation to take full advantage of Southern California's ocean breeze. Ready for more amazing design ideas? Check below !
