What more does anyone need from a beach house. The simplicity and modesty are refreshing. Unlike so much contemporary resort architecture this house is not a piece of scenographic design.

Predock Venice-house design

Venice beach house by Antoine Predock, a classic from the '80's.

The house is a concrete shell, with the primary floor lifted a couple of feet up above the ground. Black polished granite articulates the displacement, at the end of the house on the beach side, becoming a reflecting pool and a waterfall.

The black granite pulls into the house through a red-framed window that pivots vertically around a center pin. When entering the house, the granite tapers back to the entry creating a forced perspective of polished granite towards the red-framed window.

Thus, the polish of the granite, with the terminal reflecting pool-a view is foreshortened to the ocean from the entry!

Another signature project from Morphosis. This one is a real gem-a 'carriage house' in an alleyway in Venice Beach. It's got the spirit of the bricoleur, using cheap and off the shelf materials in crafty and hip way. Love bringing the asphalt shingles down the facade, the idea of bringing the roofing material down persists in works like the CalTrans headquarters and the new Caltech building; and also love the cinder block repeating in pink and 'natural' shown in this photo on the bottom right hand of the image.
