A House That “Closes” Upon Request: Casa Codina in Mendoza Posted: 25 Aug 2011 07:08 AM PDT Casa Codina was designed by A4estudio and is an impressive 4,305 square foot home located in Mendoza, Argentina. According to the architects, “the house is planned around an interior central courtyard, opening the main spaces to a large lateral garden. The big concrete wall that emerges from the central courtyard, with the fundamental mission of protecting the house from solar radiation from the west, also ends by opening the access area. To protect the west façade, a micro perforated aluminum material was chosen to ventilate it. The same material was used to design the main façade of the house. The result is a project full of contrast, where the dramatic scope of access, from where you can only see ground and sky, faces to an open and deep interior space, where multiple instances can be understood visually, where everything seems to be simultaneous in space and time…” For a better understanding of the structure of Casa Codina, be sure to check out the plans at the end of the post.

Using Wood the Creative Way: Alma Table by Roberta Rampazzo Posted: 25 Aug 2011 04:04 AM PDT Alma ("Soul") table was created by Brazilian designer Roberta Rampazzo and has a simple, yet original appearance. Seen on Design Milk, we find this furniture piece to be an example of how wood scraps can be employed in creating a functional design. The acrylic frame holds the scraps together while giving an overall elegant touch to the product. The project developer asserted that this is her way to emphasize on the nobility of wood, even in its most unused shape. The table looks sturdy and can be integrated with ease in various contemporary decors. Bottom line is if you have a bunch of wood scraps at home, you might want to put your imagination to the test and see how you can achieve a practical furniture piece. What do you think of the overall design of this unusual table?

Spectacular Contemporary Residence in Singapore: The Sun House Posted: 25 Aug 2011 01:58 AM PDT
The Sun House was designed by Guz Architects and is a beautiful green home located in Singapore. According to the designers, the residence is “a relatively compact house for Singapore on a roadside corner plot in an established bungalow area. We endeavored to make the most of the site by pushing the main 'L' shape of the building to the rear. This then created an open courtyard which was private but with still a feeling of openness on the relatively densely constructed site, thus still allowing for good views and airflow. We used the ponds and pool as cooling elements for the building as well as visual focal points. Volumes and space were maximized as much as possible by sharing the open staircase and double height living space with the courtyard area.” The architects also say that the owner contributed a great detail to their planning by allowing his collection of artwork and sculptures to be an important inspiration factor for the overall design.
