Standing lamp XIII by Calabarte

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 03:56 PM PDT

Polish artist Przemek (Calabarte) creates sculptural lamps made from gourds.

.

Description from Przemek (Calabarte):

The gourd is an annual tropical vine originating in Africa and Asia. Its dried, lignified fruits are used for various decorative as well as practical purposes.

My lamps are made from this unique fruit through a process of manual perforation and framing. Wholly natural materials and the highest quality of craftsmanship allow for unusual effects. In each interior they create a unique atmosphere, which makes it possible to enjoy light in more than just pragmatic terms.

As the shape of the fruit is determined by nature, and the framing created manually, each lamp is one of its kind.

Boet Stools by Note Design Studio

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 01:29 PM PDT

Stockholm-based Note Design Studio have created the Boet Stools.

.

Description from the designers:

This is Boet (meaning Nest in Swedish), a stool inspired by the birds’ home among the trees. Elevated, protected, carried by a strong tree, you find the soft, rounded shape of the nest.

The contrast between materials with different functions creates dynamics. Metal in different colors signal strength and tone. In the metal bowl a soft shape of cork to sit on, warm and welcoming. The nest always feels like home.

In connection with our design concept for Johan & Nystrom’s new showroom in Helsinki, we needed a stool with strong character for the café in a high and a low model. The old port warehouse, where the café is located, is sturdy and heavy in brick and rough wooden beams. With this we have furnished with lots of color and a mix of unexpected materials, where Boet has a natural place.

Boet will be shown for the first time at the COUPLICITE exhibition during Maison et Objet in Paris 2011.

The Sun House by Guz Architects

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 05:39 AM PDT

Guz Architects have designed the Sun House in Singapore.

.

Description from the architects:

The sun house is a relatively compact house for Singapore on a roadside corner plot in an established bungalow area. We endeavoured to make the most of the site by pushing the main 'L' shape of the building to the rear.  This then created an open courtyard which was private but with still a feeling of openness  on the relatively  densely constucted site, thus still allowing for good views and airflow.  We used the ponds and pool as cooling elements for the building as well as visual focal points.  Volumes and space were maximised as much as possible by sharing the open staircase and double height living space with the courtyard area. At the end of the day the house was also designed around the owner, who had a lovely collection of artwork and sculptures and this inspired the creation of a large solid wall with niches which housed his artworks as well as giving the building an anchor on which to expand other spaces.
