How to Choose Welcoming Walkway Elements for your Exterior Home

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 04:32 AM PDT

Your outdoor home is starting to become more in focus, now that the warmer weather is moving in. While your physical exterior home is one aspect, have you looked at the area that leads to your home? The sidewalks, walkways, paths, patios, covered walks, etc…. are all areas of your outdoor home that welcome guests in from the street. Choosing inviting elements to enhance these walkways will make your home more pleasing to approach, as well as give you a sense of joy when viewing your outdoor home from inside. Here are tips for choosing welcoming walkway elements.

  • Beautify the journey: Whether the pathway to your home is long or short, the "journey" to get to your front door should be enjoyable. This can be achieved with beautifying your walkway with landscaping, lighting, colorful rocks, or even decorative benches and stepping stones. Many landscape designers enjoy this part of their profession, because the journey to your front door should be enjoyed and not just ran through. Stand outside your home and look at the colors of your home, landscaping, and surroundings to find creative ways to bring areas of visual interest to your front door.
  • Coordinate with your neighbors: While your walkway doesn't need to clone your neighbors, a unified street of coordinating exteriors is inviting and contagious! Try using similar plantings, colors of foliage, trellises, low fencing and decorative rocks and walls to connect visually and physically. Many neighbors like to participate in landscaping projects together to give their adjoining outdoor homes similar curb appeal.  This will help create a gorgeous street of unification, rather than individualized creativity that may get lost amongst neighbors that are trying to be rebels.

  • Decorate with creative light: A welcoming walkway should also be enjoyed in the evening hours and many outdoor walkways can come alive as the sun goes down. Choose from solar lighting to line your pathways or hang creative sculptural lanterns or even outdoor pendants from trees and overhead architectural elements. Even white string lights can brighten an outdoor patio area, as can large ground lanterns that mimic luminaries.  When choosing walkway lighting consider safety and if there are changes in grade or elevation along the path. Sure, lighting can beautify, but it should also assist in safety and security for your guests to and from your home.

  • Choose your outdoor components to work together: Similarly to your interior home in which you choose the fabrics, wall paint, and flooring to coordinate, so should be considered when choosing your outdoor components. In your walkways, choose lighting that coordinates with the lighting at the front entry and near the garage. When choosing colors for stained concrete pavers, choose colors that coordinate with your exterior paint color, trim and accents. Create a unified look to make your walkways beckon to come into your home.

Your front entry elements play a significant role in how your home is perceived and how your guests will enjoy the experience to your home. If you have your home up for sale, remember most homebuyers will make up their mind about your home before they even get to the front door.  Use these tips to ensure they will want to come right in!

Jodlowa House Stunning House with Fully Glazed Steel Frame Structure: the Jodlowa House by PCKO Stunning incorporation of glass into a residential design makes the Jodlowa House a contemporary inhabitable work of art. Architects from award winning practice PCKO collaborated with MOFO Architects from Poland to create a fully glazed steel frame structure, in the outskirts of Krakow, Poland. The residence features a large, 140 sqm living area, two main bedrooms and a 5 storey viewing tower with panoramic views of the Tatra Mountains. The tower also features additional guest rooms and an office space. A covered swimming pool lengthens the dreamy comfort of the home, offering relaxation and vitality. An inside deck, fully glazed, invites guests to dinner, while another deck, accentuated by chaise-longues and a blue open sky, invite the family to take a moment and relax after a hard day’s work. Owning such an open house, that only protects private spaces, must evoke an exceptional feeling. In tune with nature, the inhabitants have the rare opportunity of living each season as if they were right in the middle of nature.

Beautiful Contemporary One-Storey Villa in The Netherlands

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 02:28 AM PDT

Villa Frenay 00 0 750x500 Beautiful Contemporary One Storey Villa in The Netherlands

Completed in 2010, Villa Frenay was designed by 70F Architecture and is located in Almere, the Netherlands. Here is a description from the architects: “To break the flat polder landscape, the roof of the living / dining room is slightly sloping. At the non-waterfront (north) of the house there are the children's rooms with their bathroom, a utility room and the living room. The existing artificial 'hills' on the premises we accentuated, and the carport with storage room is half buried in one of them. The sauna with garden shed is placed on another hill, and is the highest of the three buildings. From the sauna is a view over a Cor-Ten steel waterfall that runs along the open-air terrace at the gable of the house, sloping towards the water feature that runs along the plot. With the spread of the buildings, a residential area is created, more than a house with outbuildings. The transparency and direction can be seen in the interior, providing the ultimate inside – outside experience, emphasized by the slopes on the plot”. According to Home DSGN, the overall budget for this one level villa was €460,000. Seems like a fair cost ?

EX T for Japan Turn Buying Furniture into Philantrophic Gesture: BONBON Cupboard

BONBON Cupboard was created by designer Hiroshi Kawano for ex.t, a young Italian brand. With an original circular shape, this design could easily interact with a large variety of bathroom elements for an interesting visual effect. The cupboards come in different sizes and can be combined in an unlimited number of ways. They are not just intriguing looking, but also quite practical; in a single unit one can store several bathroom objects. The unusual thing about this design is that by purchasing it, you can contribute to helping Japan. How is this possible? By paying 293 Euros for the product, 100 Euros will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society. Sounds fair? BONBON Cupboard will be exhibited during Milan design Weak 2011, so let us know if you see it live.

Playful Pencil Organizer for Fresh Desks: Pratonzolo

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 12:09 AM PDT

pratonzolo 1 Playful Pencil Organizer for Fresh Desks: Pratonzolo Max Battaglia of Givingshape in collaboration with BBM‘s Matteo Mocchi designed a fun solution for storing several desk objects, such as pens, pencils or business cards. Even though at a first glance, this product looks like a brush turned upside down, with seemingly no desk purpose, “Pratonzolo” is a playful method of keeping your writing objects organized. Seen on Core77, its appearance is quite original and the design is extremely easy to move around from one part of the desk to another. The bristles imitating grass and the wooden support add a fresh touch to any office. Moreover, the unusual design could for some imply that the owner is a fun and laid back person. What do you think- annoying or practical?
