Refined House Apartment with Semi-Open Floor Plan Posted: 06 Apr 2011 06:20 AM PDT An intriguing entrance makes the guests want to explore all the beautiful rooms of the house. This next house from Stadshem was built in the late 1940s, but the interior is a modern blend of comfortable furniture pieces and colourful personal items. Basked in natural light from three different directions, the living room greets guests with a cosy feel. Adjacent to the kitchen there is a large dining area and the rest of the room can accommodate a selection of furniture chosen by the inhabitant. Walls are painted in white and the floor is covered with oak parquet flooring. The master bedroom has plenty of room for a double bed with wardrobe and some other small furniture items like a dresser and nightstands. The second bedroom can be used as children’s rooms. It features oak parquet flooring, white walls and a dinosaur patterned Sandberg wallpaper as a background. The 80 m² apartment will surely be a conversation piece for friends and family. How to Revamp an Old Dresser with Old Maps Posted: 06 Apr 2011 04:00 AM PDT Wondering how you can revamp an old dresser? We have an idea for you. How about using maps of places you love to make that old dresser fit in with your modern home? Domestic Ease shows us exactly how easy it can be to turn an old piece of furniture into a bright and lovely reminder of how big the world is. Using some old National Geographic maps, Kristin Campbell covered the drawers on the dresser below and made it look amazing. By carefully studying the maps, Kristin chose the ones that would look good together, balancing blue and white into a wonderful design. Then she put her heart into it: “I divided the maps into four places our little family has lived for the four drawers:  Virginia (my childhood), California (my hubby & I during college), Guatemala (where our beautiful adopted daughter was born), and then Texas (where we live now).” Then, with the help of scissors, Mod Podge, a sponge brush and several damp paper towels, she shaped and glued the maps directly to the wood. She finished the piece by painting the dresser in a colour that goes well both with the maps and her room. Superb Apartment with Spacious Rooms in Gothenburg’s Finest Neighbourhood Posted: 06 Apr 2011 01:56 AM PDT Located in Eriksberg, a former shipyard area – now rebuilt as one of Gothenburg’s finest modern neighbourhoods – the apartment you are about to see is a beautiful space that balances modern features and a contemporary layout. Three-meter high windows facing south and the huge cathedral ceilings with exposed beams offer the space natural light and an airy atmosphere. How to Create a Mudroom in a Small Apartment Posted: 05 Apr 2011 11:58 PM PDT Whether there are still slush piles outside, or the weather is making way to spring showers, inevitably there is still going to be mud being tracked into your home. In the entrance of your home, where do you put your wet boots and coat? For larger homes, a vestibule, foyer or mudroom are the ideal dry off spaces, but what if you live in an apartment or a smaller home and don't have the space? You can still create an area that is ideal for you to drop off your wet slicker, and keep the rest of your home dry. Here are tips for your small apartment or home. Optimize vertical wall space: Everyone doesn't have floor space, but everyone has walls, right?! Take advantage of wall space when you have a small area to work with. Install hooks for hanging jackets and coats, and shelving or cubbies to hold baskets for dog leashes, wet backpacks, and storing your umbrella. Mudrooms don't have to be a "room". It can be an area that you designate for your outdoor gear. It's also a good place to put keys, wallets, and purses that you always forget running late to work in the morning! Protect your flooring: Assess your walk off area and determine what type of flooring protection you need. In many apartments there is no transition from the immediate foyer area to the rest of your home. In this case, opt for an outdoor mat immediately at the door to collect water and mud, and then a nicer natural fiber floor mat that will enable your floor to still remain looking nice. Depending on your geographic area, you may only need these certain seasons of the year. By time the summer months come around, a beautiful floor runner rug may be all that you need. Multifunctional area: In small homes, multifunctional spaces are key. In your mudroom area, determine if you can use the space to also house other functions. It may be a good place to store unopened mail, notes to the kids with a chalkboard, or even a bulletin board for important notes that the family needs to see daily. It can also make a great place for baby toys, yoga mats and gym bags that you often don't know where to put in your bedroom, or just need when running out the door. Decorate your mudroom area: While the main focus of your mudroom is to be functional it can also be beautiful. Consider getting brightly colored shelving, cubbies, and hooks, in coordinating colors to the wall around it. Beautify your wall with artwork, mirrors, and even a hanging pendant light if you have space. If your apartment is too strict, opt for removable hooks and wall hangers that leave minimum holes in the wall, that can be easily puttied.  Decorate your mudroom area to reflect your decorative style, and when your coats are dry – move them into other closets to keep your front entry from getting overly cluttered. Having a mudroom in your apartment or small home isn't only for those who have space to spare. Having a designated area for your outdoor gear can keep the rest of your home clean, tidy and dry. Use this area to hold multiple items, and if you have an outlet, consider getting a charging station to house your smart phone, iPad, and other gadgets that need regular charging. Before your know it, you'll have more than one reason to put a mudroom into your small home. Canyon Inspired Residence in the Netherlands with Original Architecture Details Posted: 05 Apr 2011 10:56 AM PDT This uncommon looking residence was designed by architects 24H > architecture and is located in Leyden, The Netherlands. According to Arch Daily, the facade of the home is an echo of the “canyon” represented by this project: “the canyon flows through the house and encloses the stairs.” This feature allows light to enter the building and ensure a good illumination for each of the three floors. More explanations from the architects reveal that “the walls of the canyon are used to divide the house into the necessary spaces. No other walls are placed thus the canyon is present in every room. Where desired, the canyon becomes transparent and filters the daylight. Where needed, it's closed and allows toilets and bathrooms to be placed behind its walls”. Cosy One Bedroom Apartment with an Open Floor Plan Posted: 05 Apr 2011 09:40 AM PDT Bright colours, lots of natural light and a cosy feeling of home – everything you need can be found in this 47 square meters apartment in Stockholm. Located on the third floor of a building in Goteborg’s Linnéstaden neighbourhood, the small apartment features an open kitchen, a living room, a bedroom and a bathroom, all beautifully designed to capture sunlight and help the inhabitant feel at home. Recently renovated, the main living space is delimitated from the kitchen with the help of a kitchen island made from solid walnut that also serves as a breakfast corner or a bar. A wonderful social layout greets the guests and the recently sanded and oiled floor gives the place a rustic feel. With two large windows facing the quiet leafy courtyard with views of the neighbour’s rooftops and the sky, the bedroom offers plenty of room for a double bed, the wardrobe and a bookshelf. The walls are painted in white highlighting the stucco, woodwork and high skirting boards. The floor is decorated with the original wooden flooring, which has been sanded and oiled.
