Southender Addition is a modern project designed by Shed Architects and located in Seattle, Washington. The clients needed an extra space for a bedroom and a guest bed, as well as for various storing needs. The result? An L-shaped volume which was added to the existing building, forming a tasteful and aesthetic architecture contrast. The new extension houses a bedroom, a dressing, a bathroom and a beautiful hallway with bookcase. Large windows ensure just the right amount of natural lighting needed by the owners. Moreover, the addition provides a shed for the outdoor dining table and creates an atmosphere that is perfect for socializing. Check out the “before” and “after” photo at the end of the post for a better understanding of the project and let us know if you would go for this type of home addendum.

Elegant Table with Legs Inspired by the Structure of DNA

table Freshome02 Elegant Table with Legs Inspired by the Structure of DNA
According to designboom, the “Watson Table” borrowed its name from scientist James Watson, known for discovering the helical structure of DNA. Designed by Paul Loebach, this elegant table will be on display during Milan Design Week 2011 along with three other projects from the collection called ” Some Recent Experiments” and belonging to the same designer. Here is a short product description: “Influenced by English furniture of the late 1600′s, the object features bold, structural legs that are reminiscent of open wood twistings. Made from a wood and carbon composite, the table utilizes the inherent rigidity of carbon as a structural core, creating a symbolic composition of maximum strength with minimal materials.” Stylish and modern, the “Watson Table” can be integrated in a variety of contemporary interiors for an appealing visual effect.

Combining Vintage and Modern in a Small Two-Room Apartment

Stora Nygatan Apartment 9 Combining Vintage and Modern in a Small Two Room Apartment

Stockholm’s Stora Nygatan Street features this beautiful 75 sqm apartment situated on the 4th and last floor of a 1800s building. The positioning of the apartment at the top floor reduces outside noise dramatically. Combining vintage furniture and modern decorations in excellent taste, the interior designer did a great job showing that a small apartment can be just as comfortable as a large home. Characterized by neoclassicism, the apartment has been renovated to fit modern needs. White painted walls in the living room accentuate the oak parquet flooring and large windows bright up the space. The kitchen features dark wood veneer frames and worktops, while the modern furniture is painted in white. Wide oak planks cover the floor. The bathroom features a contemporary corner shower separated by arched zebra-patterned glass doors. A spacious hallway acts like the office space, making the apartment look larger and brighter. Buy it from Stadshem or take it as example for your own interior design project.

Flower’s Best Friend: Log and Squirrel Self-Watering Pot

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 12:47 AM PDT

Face it: there was more than one time when you simply forgot to water the flowers as programed. Log & Squirrel by Qualy Design is a self-flowering pot that will always remind you when those plants need a refill. The uncommon pot comes with a water reservoir, enough to feed the flower up to three days. The interesting thing about the design is that it works based on a very “cute” system. Inside the reservoir there is a funny squirrel which basically indicates if the plant needs more water. As the reservoir is filled, the rodent is pushed up and appears from the cave. It is in this position that one can tell the plant received the right amount of liquid. As time goes by, a simple look at the log will be enough to decide if the plants need watering or not. What do you think- practical or too juvenile?

#6. Zecc Architects managed the impossible: converting a 1931 water tower in Soest, The Netherlands into a contemporary home with no less than nine levels. As you probably already imagined, many challenges came with this uncommon "home renovation".  According to I New Idea, light was the main issue, as the tower only had a few small windows. The solution? Inserting a three-level high window which lets light in without interfering with the tower's mid-century appearance.

Minimalist and Refined Dining Set: TABBED Collection

Posted: 04 Apr 2011 08:40 AM PDT

Scott, Rich & Victoria from New Zealand have designed a beautiful dining collection characterized by style, creativity and simplicity. Here is the description we received from the designers: Consisting of dining chairs and matching tables the TABBED collection is a family of products defined by interaction between folded planes of sheet metal and hand finished oak elements. With refined details and sophisticated folds the TABBED collection is an elegant marriage of materials. The designs in the set are available in a variety of natural and stained colour combinations which means they are highly adaptable to a large variety of interiors. Even though our attention was initially captured by the white version of the dining collection, the other color combinations are just as lovely.
