Cat Lovers, Gather: Feline-Friendly Modular Bookcase Posted: 05 Mar 2011 12:29 AM PST Today we have a special furniture treat for those of you with a passion for reading and for…cats. The Cat Library was designed by Corentin Dombrecht and is a practical asset to have around for both humans and felines. The design is modular, so more than one shelving combination is possible. Moreover, the product comes with a few fun features especially added for the playful nature of the small pets. We have to say we find the attached stair system quite ingenious, as it allows the cats to walk or run up and down the furniture piece without any damage being done to the books or magazines stored within. The Cat Library is easy to integrate in a large variety of modern and even traditional interiors. Have a look at the video below for a glimpse of how this bookcase can be “animated”.

Modern Single-Family Home: The Calem-Rubin Residence by David Jameson Posted: 04 Mar 2011 10:33 AM PST Originally constructed in 1939, the Calem-Rubin Residence received a contemporary look from David Jameson Architect Inc. The house was transformed from a colonial style brick building into a modern single-family residence. Situated in Bethesda, Maryland, the Calem-Rubin Residence covers an area of 4,700 square feet. The client wanted to live in a modern house and so, the architects rebuilt the structure as “a composition of modern form and timeless material“. Featuring a kitchen, dining room and music room on the north side, the dwelling also offers entertaining spaces like the double-height living room, a library and an outdoor room on the south side. A set of stairs leading up to the second floor overlooks the living room.

An Inspiring Interior for an Optician’s Shop: Hofstede Optiek in the Netherlands Posted: 04 Mar 2011 09:25 AM PST Lately we’ve been featuring a few commercial interior designs on Freshome because we know most of you out there are very much involved in world of business. We decided these sort of projects could be inspiring when it comes to decorating your own commercial space. In this particular post, we would like to present an unusual optician’s shop located in The Hague, Netherlands and designed by architect Alexander Nowotny. Envisioning the “shop as a stage”, the architects managed to create a highly original atmosphere as if taken from a fantasy movie: The new Hofstede salesroom had to be both entertaining and seductive, had to stimulate all the senses without being loud and vulgar. The concept had to embody the opposite of monotonous, overfilled shop windows and endless display racks inside. Hofstede shows frames without exception in display cases, also in the shop window. The products are presented as unique items, because the customers themselves, of course, would like to be unique and buy something unique. Most of the frames are locked away and taken out for the personal consultation with the customer. Self-service only applies to sunglasses. The customer should be served and be given the feeling that he or she is a "star". The shop serves as a stage. Please let us know what you think of this project and if you would like us to feature even more commercial designs on Freshome!

Bright Swedish Cabinets Collection from A2 Designer: The Collect 2011 Posted: 04 Mar 2011 08:12 AM PST Creating a collection of colourful and playful cabinets was not hard for the bright minds at A2 Designers. The Swedish designers named the collection Collect 2011. Produced in SmÃ¥land, Sweden, the cabinets are made from wood and MDF, painted in beautiful and fun colours: white, blue, yellow and pink. A pattern adorns each door and the colours make each cabinet seem to have a different design. Triangles carved into the doors please the eye and bring a sense of playfulness to the collection. Playing with geometry resulted in the creation of these little bright pieces of furniture, perfect for any room in the house. The designers use few words in describing the collection: “Collect 2011 is colourful and characterised by its interesting doors with a pattern of triangles in two levels.” They let the pictures speak about the hunger for creating new and exciting products.
