10 Tips for Lighting Your Storage & Closets

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 04:11 AM PDT

Storage rooms and closets are the number one space that home owners wish they had more room for in their homes. Storage and a place to accumulate belongings will always be a challenge for home builders. Another factor that plagues home owners is how to light their 'too-small' closets.  For some, walk-in closets become dressing rooms but the lighting makes it difficult to see well. While small closets need new lighting sources for the space to be usable.  Here are 10 tips to help you light your storage room and closet areas:
closet lighting e1287399264771 10 Tips for Lighting Your Storage & Closets

1.) Install brighter lighting fixtures: For those that have an existing lighting fixture inside of their closet, consider installing brighter bulbs to reflect more light.  Consider installing CFL (Compact Florescent Light bulbs) to save energy and to emit a brighter light.

2.) Battery operated lights: For smaller closets a battery operated lighting fixture is a good option. Varieties come in wall mounted fixtures, and ceiling mounted varieties. Consider the frequency of use in this storage area. If you find yourself running through batteries, it may be better to hard wire a lighting source in the closet.

3.) Open up space with a window: If your closet is on an exterior wall, consider adding a window to bring in natural light. The cost it takes to install a window may outweigh the energy costs to light it with a fixture for the 20 years!

4.) Use solar tubes: Solar tubes use metallic and reflective surfaces to bounce sunlight from the roof down into your home space, or closet.  This tube can qualify some U.S. home buyers for home energy efficient tax incentives as well as keep your energy bill down, due to the use of natural sunlight for lighting.

5.) Declutter closets to allow for more lighting: Let's face it, if you had less belongings in your closet, the need for more light may not be an issue. Take inventory of your closet and ensure you need all the contents. If you don't, purge them and make your closet as simple as possible.  Lighting that can spread to all corners is a major asset.

6.) Install lighting amongst closet organizers: If your closets use closet organization systems, consider having lighting installed inside them.  Similar to under cabinet lighting used in kitchens, lighting can be installed amongst closet organizers. Lighting can make a master bedroom closet feel more upscale with the addition of puck lights or incandescent can lights amongst closet organization systems.

7.) Cove lighting is beautiful: Consider adding indirect lighting to a cove or soffit above the closet space. This especially looks beautiful in high ceilings where direct lighting may be a challenge.

8.) LED sensor lights: Sensor lights that operate with a magnetic strip upon the opening and closing of a closet door could be a perfect option for your home. LED lights cost less than incandescent lights to operate and emit a brighter light. Consider visiting a local lighting store to see new lighting options available on the market.

9.) Get help from professionals: If you are puzzled about solving your own lighting dilemma, consider hiring a professional light designer that will maximize your lighting sources and will assess your current challenges. Often time's designers can help you save money with innovative products and tips.

Saving Money as a Competition: DUEL Savings Bank

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 03:08 AM PDT

Here is a creative small moneybox designed to increase its owners’ will to save money. Sounds like a difficult objective to achieve? With the DUEL Savings Bank things are taken to another level, as competition becomes the key factor that puts things in motion. The original product features two inlets for dropping money. When one of the two moneybox sharers saves more money than the other, the ‘Savings Bank” will act as a scale, exposing the user that participated in a smaller share. The only thing the producers probably didn’t take into consideration is the possibility of cheating. After all, one can drop plenty of pennies in there in order to tilt the scale, and no one would ever know. We think the best solution would be for the couple to agree first hand on the type of coin they are going to use and respect their pact. -via Swiss Miss

Astonishing One Floor Apartment with Breathtaking Panoramic Views

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 01:54 AM PDT

Everyone loves a home with a view! This incredible apartment in Darling Point, Sydney has a privileged location which allows its inhabitants to enjoy stunning views of the harbor and Opera House. This apartment takes up the whole 16′th floor of a circular tower, which makes things… panoramic. Here is some information from Stanic Harding Architecture, the designers of this modern project: “Our desire was to alter the space to maximize its potential. This was done by reconfiguring the apartment to allow for a continuous path through all the spaces. All doors between rooms slide away into joinery to provide for an unencumbered journey to emphasis this. The apartment was stripped back to concrete shell and the spaces were redesigned to suit the tight dimension between core and window wall whilst at the same time to maximize the sense of space. This was done by spaces being more radial than orthogonal and further enhanced by each room maximizing its connection to full window bays wherever possible.” We appreciate  the highly modern feel that this apartment inspires, but in the same time can’t help but notice the seriousness of the interior design. This place could use a personal touch, don’t you agree?

How to Use Mirrors to Decorate your Home

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 12:50 AM PDT

Mirrors are a decorative item that never gets enough fanfare.  They can be used as a finish material on walls, and as a cladding on furniture.  Hung over fireplaces and placed in frames, mirrors can transform a room from small to roomy in an instant.  Mirrors are extremely versatile in that they can represent any décor style, and can also be used in feng shui to channel energy!  Your home can benefit from the use of mirrors, and here are some simple uses.

  • Make a room feel larger: In small rooms and especially apartments, mirrors offer an inexpensive way to give the illusion of space. Place mirrors on a wall opposite of a window wall and see how the view is multiplied times ten throughout the rest of the space.  Use mirrors in a small kitchen as a backsplash and suddenly you will enjoy cooking and spending more time in your kitchen.
  • Place a mirror over the fireplace: For most home's the fireplace is already the focal point of the room in which it resides.  Add more emphasis to the fireplace by placing a beautifully framed mirror above the mantel.  This will enlarge the room, and add a reflective surface to the décor you place on the mantle. From candle sticks to seasonal décor, a fireplace begs for a gorgeous mirror to adorn it.

  • Add interest to a long hallway: If your home has a long hallway, it's a welcomed opportunity to place mirror vignettes, 'puzzle' piece mirrors, or groups of hanging mirrors on the side walls.  This will help distract the eye when walking down the hallway, and will brighten up the darkness of the long corridor as well.
  • Brighten up your entry: Mirrors placed in a foyer or entryway is a welcomed sight for guests.  They reflect light and open up a dark entry and give a place for guests to 'check' themselves while entering your home.  In a larger foyer, place a small table, flower arrangement, lamp and mirror on the wall to expand the living area into this welcomed space. Try adding a mirrored buffet or table to adjacent rooms to make the entry flow into another room seamlessly.

  • Mirrors are used in feng shui: Ideas include:
  • Dining Room: Mirrors placed next to your dining table are believed to bring fortune and wealth.
  • Hallway end: Don't place mirrors at the end of a hallway – it will create a place for energy to stop flowing.
  • Bathrooms: Mirrors represent water in feng shui, use them in your bathroom to create a flow of positive energy.
  • Bedroom full length mirrors can be fun: Full length mirrors can be a simple framed piece on a wall or you can have a bold statement as a piece of furniture.  In home décor magazines, mirrors that sit on the floor, and are seven feet tall are a beautiful way to add emphasis to an empty corner of a bedroom. Use multiple frameless mirrors on a wall to give visual interest, as well as a dressing room effect in your room.  The possibilities are endless, and bedrooms are all about self expression!

Mirrors reflect light into a space to brighten and enliven the décor.  Try using mirrors in varying sizes, and with different color frames to give this versatile material several aesthetic uses throughout your home.  The true beauty of mirrors is that they can be utilized in every room of your house, try these tips and see which room you love mirrors in the best!
