Unconventional Chair and Miniature Bookcase : Bookseat

Posted: 02 Oct 2010 01:49 AM PDT

We posted a lot of ideas on Freshome that emphasized some unusual extra functions that a chair may have, aside from providing seating space. Here’s an idea that is perfect for those who enjoy a good book more often than others. Bookseat comes from Fishbol and it is basically a miniature bookcase which was elegantly curved in order to become a comfortable chair. This double function turns Bookseat into an original furniture item, suited for traditional interiors, but for contemporary ones as well. The unusual chair was showcased at Toronto Interior Design Show 2008, but we decided to post it on Freshome nevertheless, because we found out that it will be relaunched in 2011 in an updated version. Bookseat comes with a cushion available in a variety of colors, but the books you have to buy separately.- via HomeQn

House with an Unexpected Shape Design : The Letterbox House

Posted: 01 Oct 2010 11:49 AM PDT

McBride Charles Ryan created a house that resembles a letterbox in the front and continues to unfurl into a gorgeous open verandah in the back. The whole concept revolves around the Australian double need to be inside as well as outside. It expresses the natural feeling of a canyon and all the senses it can awake:  the sweet smell of a fresh breeze, the clear sky on a sunny day, the windy feeling on your skin. All these senses bring a new dimension in architecture and surprise the people living in this home with gradual love towards the design. Gold on the outside, it almost feels like this home has grown from the owners love for the beach.

This residential building built on a modest suburban beach home scale tells the story of a holiday home opened to guests from all angles. There is no front door in the classic sense but there is the feeling of an open space that invites you to enjoy the golden sunstroke exterior as well as the modern and inviting interior. There is one wall inside that captures the joy of living in this unusual home: the red wall. This will be the creator of a family history. All the shelves have been constructed by keeping in mind the idea of gathering brick-a-bracs from the beach and weaving them into your memories. Together with the sandy open space that surrounds the house, all the subtle reminders of the beach put you in a relaxed mood and help the flow of creativity to run through the building as does the breeze.

The Levytator Clears the Path for an Infinite Number of Escalator Designs

The Levytator Clears the Path for an Infinite Number of Escalator Designs
The Levytator is said to be “the world’s first freeform curved escalator”. Designed by Professor Jack Levy of the City University, London, this project is highly innovative. While the common escalators (that are present at the subways or in malls for example) feature redundant steps which move underneath those that we can actually see, the Levytator consists of curved modular units which form a loop that can go back and forth (like the common escalators), but also around corners. Here is some information from the designer: "As all of the steps can be accessed from above, maintenance can be carried out much more easily. It also means that no excavation is required when installing the Levytator. This could be particularly useful in the heritage sector, where the system could be placed on top of a grand staircase in a listed stately home, providing better access for elderly and disabled visitors, but not destroying the fabric of the building." This escalator can carry twice as many people than a common stair system and clears the paths for an infinite number of stair shapes. Do you find this design practical or hard to get used to?-via Wired

Practical Wooden Home Desk with Extra Storage for Files

Posted: 01 Oct 2010 07:29 AM PDT

We know how irritating it can get when the files pile up and the need for extra storage space increases. This either means sacrificing some shelves in the bookcase or placing the files together in a stack that will eventually reach the ceiling. Here is a practical solution to help avoid these two situations. The Covet desk was designed by Shin Azumi and comes with a simple and elegant design. Moreover, it features an ingenious support for files and papers which can be organized and easily accessed whenever needed. The wooden home office desk fits great in a modern interior, but would  be a good choice for a more traditional room as well. Even though it has a storage system underneath, this does not comes as a seating impediment, as the user can still work in a very comfortable manner. -via DigsDigs
