Elegance can be redefined with the right design – an outdated home can rapidly become a ravishing beauty. Connecting timeless beauty to modern family living, LSA Architects re-imagined this home in Melbourne as a contemporary heaven decorating a classic shell. Staying on top of the brief – “enhance open space and add light whilst paying homage to the original era of the home through the choice of classic lines and materials” – the creative architectural studio turned the classic brick Federation house into an example of modern living spaces.

By re-shaping the floor-plan to create a seamless flow between public spaces, LSA Architects imagined the suburban home in Malvern as accommodating a growing family of five. Within an open collection of rooms, the family would feel free and inspired. Seamlessly connected to outdoor terraces, the living room and kitchen gather natural light via large sliding glass doors and floor-to-ceiling windows. Photographed by John Wheatley of UA Creative, the contemporary renovation captures the essence of comfortable living. Private areas were carefully designed to express relaxation – the master bedroom was fitted with a new dressing room and ensuite. Materials like the marble in the bathroom and kitchen, wooden floors and paneling create a harmonious collection of interior and exterior living spaces updated to the needs of a modern family.

Creativity and courage go hand in hand and when I say that I’m thinking about Benedetto Bufalino’s surprising transformation of a Seat Ibiza Sedan into a welcoming Jacuzzi. Perfect for outdoor days when all you can think about is relaxation, this impressive transformation is French artist Benedetto Bufalino‘s way of dealing with summer heat. Removing the roof and windows for full-fledged sunbathing, the artist created a functional and creative Jacuzzi by modifying the car’s shell to fit all components necessary to enjoy daytime and nightime bathing.

Finding solutions to the problems they face, brilliant artists can change the course of our lives or at least out perspective. Everyone who sees this Seat Ibiza Sedan turned into a Jacuzzi will have at least a topic to talk about to friends, not to mention the urge to transform a car into a bathing opportunity.

A party on wheels, this Jacuzzi car is definitely something you’d want parked in the backyard.

Modern Home Extension in Sydney Creatively Preserving an Existing Tree

Recently completed in Sydney, Australia, the Hopetoun Avenue Residence by B.E Architecture perfectly conserves a beautiful, mature lemon-scented gum tree. The project consisted of a renovation of a period home, completed with a highly modern extension. This addition is physically light, in order to protect the tree and offers an intentional point of difference to the solidity of the existing sandstone house.

The timber-clad columns recede into the background and a fine line of glazing opens to the densely planted side yard for continuous access to the natural environment from within the interior spaces. And this is where it gets interesting, as the upper level sits in the branches of the tree floating above the bottom structure to provide a unique setting overlooking views to the Sydney Harbour. The roof is treated in stone, which gives it a bohemian look, especially when covered in fallen leaves.

Contemporary House Integrating Trees in its Modern Architecture: 2 Oaks House by OBIA

2 Oaks House was imagined as a home that would comprise both a contemporary comfort level and a platform for integrating the two existing oak trees on the property. The modern home rises in a residential area near Sofia, Bulgaria and spreads over 475 square meters. Indoors and outdoors melt in an easily customizable environment connected via glass walls and doors. Ostrev Baylov Ignatov Architects (OBIA) explain the concept behind creating both a respectful environment and one that creates a central theme concentrated around the oak trees: “The trees create a natural micro-climate and function as a living element in the composition. The accent in the design concept was defining the space around them. On one hand the house has to be wide-open towards the tree crowns and the yard and on the other was the desire to emphasize on a certain shell or an envelope – explicit and yet very light and airy…, like a paper. Thus appeared the leading concept – taking the „paper theme" with the inherent property of folding.”

High energy-efficient and featuring indoor climate control, this house integrating trees induces the need for a U-shaped ground floor sheltering the living room, dining space and kitchen, all opening towards the yard. The master bedroom and two additional bedrooms upstairs, alongside a small office space make up the upper level hidden between the tree’s crown. And the details shared by the architects make it not only beautiful, but also eco-friendly: “The house has a full control building automation system allowing the user to manage from distance all parameters of the building systems as well as drawing statistics of the way the house and its energy is used over time.”

Would you exchange your current home for this one?
