You might dream of attending one of the best schools of architecture in the UK. If so, this list released by The Guardian will put some order in your choices. Cambridge University occupies the first place in the Guardian’s annual rankings among the best architecture schools in the UK. With a solid academic reputation going back some 800 years, University of Cambridge propelled into the first place this year as the top architecture school in the UK. Meanwhile, UCL's Bartlett School of Architecture dropped to the second spot after spending three years on top. The third spot was saved for University of Bath and from here on, the rankings list names like Cardiff, Queen's University Belfast, Northumbria or Sheffield.

In a neighborhood crowded with old houses, this residential project shines a light of modern living and acts as an oasis of comfort and style. This collection of interiors shape a modern model home for Trinity Bellwoods Town + Homes. Designed by Toronto-based Cecconi Simone, the bright interiors seen in Toronto, Canada, conquers the viewer with a vibrant atmosphere imagined out of stylish black, white, walnut and yellow details.

Custom millwork makes sure everything looks brilliantly finished under carefully chosen lights, while alternating closed and open storage spaces create a fascinating succession of volumes and voids spanning across the whole ground level.

This is how designers can alter a lifestyle and impose a more elegant atmosphere: “Trinity Bellwoods Town + Homes is unabashedly contemporary in a market segment crowded with traditional product. Within the residences, extended, horizontal spans of custom, open and closed millwork produce engaging compositions of solids and voids. The stair, kitchen-island tower and integrated exhaust-hood introduce modulating elements of verticality. Master suites feature Cecconi Simone custom sleep units, wall-mounted vanities and medicine cabinets accessed via a pivoting mirror.”

Impressive Family Dwelling by the Sea in Castellón, Spain

Situated opposite to a golf course in Castellón, Spain, this single family dwelling boasts great views and surprisingly, a high level of privacy. Valencia-based Sanahuja and Partners (unfortunately, the company does not have an official website with information on other works in their portfolio) envisioned D&E House as a series of volumes created using different materials. According to the architects, these volumes “structure the house in such a way that the house and its environment constitute a continuum, with a high level of comfort and habitability. Concrete is the main material, and it is articulated with white sections, or with wood finishes”.

Photographed by Lluis Casals, the residence closes in inwardly, away from the street, and opens up towards the garden side, with views of the tree grove in the golf course. And in case these sights may one day no longer be enough for some of the inhabitants of the residence, they can always turn to the seaside landscape framed by some of the rooms. The optimum indoor-outdoor connection is a strong feature of the D&E House, a project which seems to perfectly tackle comfort and modern family living.

Middle Harbour House in Sydney Showcasing a Dramatic Layered Character

Building Middle Harbour House overlooking Sydney Harbour was considered a privilege not to be undertaken lightly by the creative minds at Richard Cole Architecture. According to their statement, this modern dwelling strives to encourage the everyday experiences of a family and contributes to the rich context of the populated slopes that extend into the waterway: “A sculptural response to an exposed corner site overlooking Middle Harbour builds on the materiality of the existing sandstone base to create a dramatic and layered form. By careful manipulation of openings the substantial house achieves a balance of privacy and outlook, light and shelter, texture and warmth. ”
A mix of materials and textures give the residence a distinct personality, one that inspires both elegance and familiarity: “The warm, substantial character of the dwelling is carefully composed by means of the clarity of detailing, a palette of tactile natural materials and the careful manipulation of light. The building aspires to beauty, substance and place making in order to provide a vessel in which a family can grow”, further explained the architects.
