| Interweaving the Threads of Technology and Tradition: LACESCAPE TABLE Posted: 01 May 2014 07:22 AM PDT The project LACESCAPE TABLE by Miro Roman & Luka Vlahović interweaves the threads of technology and tradition. It was devised by Croatian women lace-makers, and completely digitally designed and fabricated. LACESCAPE TABLE is an idea and a concept which incorporates an entire population of tables. It is exactly due of the abundance of multiple expressions of lace-making that the designers do not limit themselves to creating one table that will display the single most beautiful Croatian lace: “Rather, we direct our focus on a series of objects that will celebrate the richness and diversity of Croatian lace-making: the beautiful and the mesmerizing patterns, the imperfect and the flawless ones“, explained the developers. The designer no longer manipulates the "object" itself, but designs and directs the rules, systems and narratives that will generate, produce and promote that object. The laser cut surface and the digitally bent plate create the LACESCAPE TABLE which examines how the intangible cultural heritage leaves its mark on the future of digital design:” We want to play with the postmodern legacy of quoting and collaging by using algorithmic design. We quote, rummage and play with the elements of cultural heritage. We take them to infinity. Instead of nature, culture becomes a haven for our algorithms. ” [Information provided via e-mail by Roman Vlahovic; Photography: Maja Bosnić, Ivan Dorotić / Lauba ] You're reading Interweaving the Threads of Technology and Tradition: LACESCAPE TABLE originally posted on Freshome. | Shared-Housing Project in Japan: LT Josai by Naruse Inokuma Architects Posted: 01 May 2014 01:28 AM PDT Naruse Inokuma Architects, a Japanese architectural firm designed Share House LT Josai, a residence with shared living areas. The trend of communal living is very popular in Japan, encouraging the youth to gain their independence without actually buying a new place of their own. Shared living means dividing responsibilities within the home. It functions more as a community centre than a private residence, facilitating human interaction. In spite of sharing the same water systems, living room and entrance hall, each resident has access to private rooms. Unlike most of the shared-housing projects, adapted from existing properties, LT Josai is a newly constructed building. The architect explains that “the shared and individual spaces were studied simultaneously and, by laying out individual rooms in a three-dimensional fashion, multiple areas, each with a different sense of comfort, were established in the remaining shared space”. The venue features 13 identical private bedrooms distributed across all three levels of the house. The common areas were envisioned as spaces for eating, cooking, relaxing and last, but not least, conversation. Probably the most relaxing shared space in the house is the rug area, strategically placed at the first floor. People gather here often to share stories and unbend. | Small Apartment with Secret Storage Ingeniously Designed on a Budget Posted: 30 Apr 2014 02:52 PM PDT Find the idea of living in a small apartment unappealing? Just have a look at this ingenious 26 square meter minimalist crib envisioned by Mili Mlodzi Ludzie in Lazarz, Poland. Not only does “Peter’s Flat”(the official name of the project) come with a highly modern look, but it also boosts creative storage solutions for practical living, all within a budget of €8000. Various compartments are cleverly hidden behind the white walls, stylishly camouflaged by an irregular black line pattern, scattered throughout the house: “Desk, TV, storage space and kitchen are hidden within the white front panels. Handles along with the lines on the ceiling and walls, are arranged in a broken, designated intersection of four non-orthogonal planes of walls and panels. Modest budget and Peter’s love for minimalism brought us to this design solutions“, explained the designers. This combination of black and white minimalist decor is only disrupted in the living area, where a colorful geometric carpet was strategically placed. The sleeping bed was integrated in a suspended area above the bathroom, accessible via a minimalist black ladder. Find the place as intriguing as we do?
