Serpenting along alpine Lake Wakatipu near Queenstown, New Zealand, this long and dark construction is home for a family of five. Architects Bronwyn Kerr and Peter Ritchie of Kerr Ritchie designed it for themselves and their three children. It was intended as a family lake home where solitude and natural beauty meet modern living. Caught in photos by Paul McCredie, the different details of the Drift Bay House make it an overwhelmingly beautiful modern family home.

An interior courtyard separates the family lake home to the north from the guest wing to the south. The main social structure extends upwards, shaping a double story that rushes summer sun inside. On the other side, the guest volume was also enlarged towards the sky, making the steel-clad roof look like an asymmetric butterfly. Timber boards line the walls, bringing warmth and modern elegance to an irregularly-shaped lake home floor plan. Inside, the architecture offers a sequence of spaces that range from tall and lofty to compact and homey. Large windows bring in the scenery. This creates an openness that draws the lake inside, infiltrating it in the family’s daily routine. Well-crafted and cleverly oriented to benefit from all surrounding elements, this modern lake house lets imagination drift away while you enjoy the summer breeze and panoramic views of New Zealand’s longest lake.

Do you recall this elegant masculine apartment by Polish studio Kasia Orwat? The studio recently shared Domo Nomad Space, another interesting studio which we believe you will find inspiring. The white area is the living zone, where daily activities take place. Functions as kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom and work space flow and interact with each other in a natural way since there are no obvious divisions – mobile lightweight multifunctional furniture and adaptable interior lighting based on busways, ease owner's life adapting to its needs. The black part of the apartment is the communication and storage area. A black wall hides the door to the bathroom and to the extremely capacious wardrobes.
Varied finishing materials create a very enjoyable interior. Resin floor – plain black and white with different textures – operates on the same principle of contrast. Walls and ceiling are treated with matte ceramic paints and cabinets with high-gloss fronts acting as mirrors. These visually enlarge the relatively small space of 46 m2 that thanks to mobile furniture – and exclusion of unnecessary items – seems much larger. A modern space perfectly suited for a predicting trend-watcher lifestyle, for those who carefully observe the phenomena of so-called "contemporary nomadism". Impressive Contemporary House Embracing Nature in Dominican Republic

Chilean architectural studio VASHO designed an impressive contemporary house in Dominican Republic, for a group of 18 people eager to explore this gem called nature. Located on a steep slope of land, the property follows the natural curve of the face of the hill. Partially hidden into the ground, to avoid creating a strong impact upon the viewer, the house is an environment that fully opens to the paradisiacal surroundings and embraces nature in all its aspects.

Designed as an open space with dining and kitchen included, the living room follows the natural surface of the hill, blending seamlessly with the existing natural geography of the place. Each bedroom features individual bathrooms and study areas. The terrace encompasses the entire living area, accommodating also a small jacuzzi integrated in the plan of the house for relaxation purposes. Natural materials were used to deliver an overall rustic environment, without abandoning though, the modern look.

“The act of burying the house in the hill not only touches the aesthetic aspect but also the sustainable aspect. The green roof allows for more insulation as far as direct heat from the sun is concerned. Its rear face is in contact with the rock of the hill creating a cooling phenomenon known as thermal inertia that consists of a basic physical action; The temperature of a body of lesser volume equals that of a greater volume when these two bodies are in contact.”
