Eclectic Apartment Design in Ukraine by SVOYA Studio Posted: 15 May 2014 06:50 AM PDT The spatial planning solution for this eclectic apartment design by SVOYA Studio has been determined based on the wishes of the customer. Initially a two-room loft, the abode currently displays a different structure: living room combined with the kitchen, the bedroom combined with the study and a generously-sized bathroom. The stylistic trend was given not only by the owner, but also by the cultural heritage of the historic building in which the apartment is located. High ceilings have a major impact on making the 56 square meter apartment in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine look bigger. The color spectrum plays both an aesthetic and a formative role. Ceiling, walls and floor finishes add elegance, particularly the white painted MDF panels, mirrors and herringbone parquetry. The lighting scheme was just as important: “We weren’t limited neither by diameter nor by height, thus we could fit in luxurious and at the same time austere lighting objects Zonca and De Majo. Their reflection in mirror panels creates additional depth and specific effects“. A compact pseudo-fireplace, wooden coffee table with fold leather arm-chairs and a vintage bar counter contribute to the eclectic feel of this stylish Ukrainian apartment. Innovative System Helping Lightweight Buildings Cope With Heavy Snow Posted: 15 May 2014 01:57 AM PDT The maximum stress load for a building not only involves the stress that it will experience on a frequent basis, but also irregular dynamic loads such as snowfall or wind storms. This means most of the materials invested in a certain building will only be of use occasionally. Researchers at the University of Stuttgart in collaboration with Bosch Rexroth and the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK) have come up with a clever alternative.  SmartShell is a lightweight open-air structure, only four centimeters thick and covering 100 square meters of the university's Vaihingen campus. As you probably guessed, it would be impossible for this type of building to resist on its own during heavy rain or snow. SmartShell comes with four innovative support points. While one of those supports is static, the other three incorporate hydraulic drives, especially created by Bosch Rexroth. This type of technology ingeniously adjusts the structure's geometry to make up for small (and significant) deformations and material changes caused by dynamic weather conditions. Wave to Flush: Touchless Toilet Kit for Increased Bathroom Hygiene [Video] Posted: 14 May 2014 08:04 AM PDT KOHLER Touchless Toilet Flush Kit is an accessible toilet upgrade for modern home owners in search of increased bathroom hygiene. The  DIY retrofit system allows users to simply hold their hand above the tank and operate water flow, instead of touching the regular handle. So how does it work? A no-touch sensor module installed within the tank projects an electromagnet field on top. When the field is interrupted via a simple wave of the hand, the flushing action is activated. Brian Hedlund, marketing manager for Kohler's toilet and bidet division, stated: “The Touchless flush is a great solution to this growing demand for increased hygiene in the bathroom. Homeowners are of course worried about the hygiene and health of their family members, and the toilet trip lever is an obvious area of hygienic concern. Touchless takes that concern out of the equation, utilizing new technology to provide a touchless way to control the flush“. According to Kohler's estimates, the kit takes under 20 minutes to install and is compatible with all toilet models. You can order the kit online for $100 at Kohler's website, though we also found it at Home Depot for $75.
