When Strict Regulations Are a Blessing in Disguise: Komai Residence

Komai Residence by Robert M. Gurney Architect 1 When Strict Regulations Are a Blessing in Disguise: Komai Residence

Before this spectacularly triangular home rose on a corner property in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia, USA, the cramped lot offered dog owners a place to walk their pets. Robert M. Gurney Architect was asked to imagine a fabulous residence that would not only fit in, but match the eclectic style of neighboring homes – mostly craftsman style houses and small colonials.

Komai Residence by Robert M. Gurney Architect 2 When Strict Regulations Are a Blessing in Disguise: Komai ResidenceOwned by two graphic designers who saw the potential of this compact corner lot, the fresh triangular home known as the Komai Residence was aligned with adjacent houses on both blocks. Built to the maximum height, this home was organized around a double height space sheltering the living and dining space. A compact kitchen tucked underneath the second story and opening towards the social spaces is visible from the upstairs workspace reached via a bridge. This bridge makes the connection between the open office space and the guest bedroom suite upstairs. The cleverly placed first floor master bedroom suite completes the floor plan photographed by Maxwell MacKenzie.

In order to add warmth yet keep things simple, architects imagined a play of volumes and light to create a comfy atmosphere within the triangular home: "Three large skylights further animate the space, and in combination with large expanses of glass and Kalwall panels, the space is flooded with light. Finishes are kept minimal and the detailing is crisp. Spatial composition and natural light become the primary design tools." Two off-street parking spaces were also included in the plan for this triangular piece of city land, making it "integrate comfortably within this eclectic neighborhood."

So you see, creativity is a must when dealing with building restrictions. How did you solve space challenges you stumbled upon in your own home?

Traditional Azerbaijan Carpets Turned into Hypnotizing Works of Art

design FaigAhmed carpets Traditional Azerbaijan Carpets Turned into Hypnotizing Works of Art Baku-based multimedia artist Faig Ahmed creates original works of art by reinventing traditional Azerbaijan carpets. According to My Modern Met, the artist disassembles the conventional structure of the rugs and randomly rearranges their components while taking inspiration from contemporary geometry. The result is simply hypnotizing: an array of irregular lines – some fluid, some minimalist- emerging from well-established classic patterns.

carpet design Traditional Azerbaijan Carpets Turned into Hypnotizing Works of Art The combination of traditional and modern is a key aspect defining Faig Ahmed’s work: “My art is directed towards transforming these boundaries beyond any recognition. To be honest, things I do are now always right and beautiful ones, I do it without thinking, it’s my instantaneous expression. Same changes happen in the world of today each day – ideas that have been formed for ages are being changed in moments. I just make bold experiments, putting them into the art scene, trusting myself and my art in viewers will“. We know most of you would probably like to view these works in a museum, but would you consider experimenting the use of these carpets at home? Meandering Through Old Pine Trees: Spectacular Sohlbergplassen Viewpoint in Norway

architecture Norway viewing spot Meandering Through Old Pine Trees: Spectacular Sohlbergplassen Viewpoint in NorwayThere is something particularly appealing about high places and their ability to reveal a general perspective on things. The Sohlbergplassen Viewpoint was designed by Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk and allows visitors to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view in Stor-Elvdal, Norway. The geometry and structure of the platform is said to be inspired by the densely growing pine trees on the hill side and the distant mountains.
design Norway viewing point Meandering Through Old Pine Trees: Spectacular Sohlbergplassen Viewpoint in NorwayBelieve it or not, the scenery is not the most impressive component of this project. What we love most about this viewing platform is that its completion meant no damage to the environment: “It was crucial to find a foundation system that would not destroy any roots. The ground in the area was frost-free at 2.7 meters – any traditional foundation would imply substantial excavation, and cut down of most of the trees”, the architects explained.  The structure is supported by thin steel core pillars, drilled to rock, in some places more than 12 meters below the ground. A staircase leads to the space underneath the platform and further down the hill to the lake. The floor has a hardly noticeable tilt outwards, making users feel pulled towards the view.

Clever and Effective Way to Promote Homeless Dog Adoption by IKEA [Video]

Emphasizing on the need for homeless dog adoption, IKEA teamed up with Singapore-based SOSD and the Animal Lovers League Shelter in launching the Home for Hope project. With a limited budget, the shelters can only spread the word about pets in need of a home through social media. But the people who follow the official social media pages of the animal shelters usually already have a pet of their own. For the much needed exposure of these pets, IKEA created life-size cardboard cutouts from photographs of homeless dogs and integrated them in the company’s showrooms.

home for hope ikea Clever and Effective Way to Promote Homeless Dog Adoption by IKEA [Video] Until June 6th, two Ikea stores in Singapore will feature 26 different life-size cardboard cut-outs of dogs available for adoption. Each dog has QR code tagged to its collar, leading to the Home for Hope official website for more information, a bio and even a short film featuring the shopper’s potential new friend. Be sure to have a look at the video below for a presentation of the project!
