Located within a coastal community in Nova Scotia, the Martin-Lancaster House captures the beauty of the Atlantic ocean in its modern design. Overlooking scenic oceanic waters, this 3000 square foot courtyard house was cleverly compartmentalized into four main elements: a social pavilion, a gabled volume – part guest house part garage, a service bar to the north and an arrival court in-between. Under the attentive supervision of MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects, the Canadian town of Prospect in Nova Scotia has seen a drastic upgrade in look with the construction of this elegantly contemporary courtyard house.

Photographed by Greg Richardson, the home showcases a modern version of the local culture. This induces the feeling of a home breathing in its context, a dream home that can only be fit in this environment. Its beautiful skin of cedar shingles cascades from the roof down on the walls. Interrupted by large windows framing a soothing landscape, the geometric procession of shingles is highly responsive to the harsh unpredictable oceanic climate. Social and private spaces were designed to suit the needs of the occupants, while the exterior was perfectly blended into its landscape.

I for one prefer warmer interiors, but the exterior use of wood and glass on each volume is simply stunning! What do you think?

Original 2D Lamp Design Becomes 3D When Lit: BULBING

BULBING is an original lamp design based on a clever principle, which we believe you will find captivating. Product designer, Nir Chehanoswki of Studio Cheha takes everyday objects like a light bulb, a candlestick, and a lamp and forces people to rethink the way they perceive these items: “I aim to preserve the old and the familiar and translate it into the New World. Bulbing is a development of my earlier works, using 3D wire-frame images and transferring them onto 2D materials, to create functional and delicate design pieces that trick the eye“, the designer stated. BULBING has been made from man-made fibers, natural materials, and both machinery and artisan handwork, which are harmoniously blended. The changeable design is made from an acrylic glass sheet, which is known for its incredible light transmitting properties (more than glass and plastic).
