Since then, architecture styles changed enough to allow modern interpretations to offer a trip down memory lane. This is the case of the Far Pond Residence by Bates Masi Architects – a 1970s kit house in Southampton, New York, revived with a contemporary appeal. The existing glulam post and beam construction connected with steel plates was extended with the help of an additional volume. The design of the existing house was enhanced by building a modern interpretation of that theme, one that focuses on clearly expressing the structural system. Prefabricated elements were used to resolve space problems and keep the old and new parts related: "Examining the strategy of a kit of parts, current material fabrication technologies are utilized to expand on this idea. A different approach to sustainability is explored, minimizing waste by simplifying to the essential components in order to resolve multiple problems, thus eliminating typical construction waste." A modified version of prefabricated shear wall panels like the ones used in areas prone to hurricanes were mounted on site to keep a secure structure: “The new structural panels multitask throughout the addition. The solid steel transitions to a perforated panel that baffles the sunlight over windows and doors. The light quality varies throughout the day as light levels transition through the overlapped perforations. Fins that protrude from the wall panels are laser cut to accept shelving, seating and countertops. The same perforated steel becomes the dining room chandelier, and the platform for the stair and desk. ” Overlooking surrounding wetlands down to an estuary and an ocean bay, the fascinating kit house turned modern home exudes a casual vibe and an inviting warmth. Simple elegance is displayed throughout the interiors of this home, exuded by an interesting array of materials and enhanced by color contrasts. The stage was set for contemporary artistic additions, which add a slightly pedantic effect. White walls contribute to an overall fresh and clean look, while large windows allow an abundance of natural light inside all the rooms of the loft. Each design element has its unique and powerful personality and how the studio planned this harmonious mix is inspiring. A vintage feel is subtly released in the living area, due to the leather armchairs and ottoman. From Cottage to Dream Home: Cloud Street Residence Posted: 12 May 2014 02:01 PM PDT Located in Menlo Park, California, the boldly colored Cloud Street Residence impresses with its modern aesthetic and makes you wonder how it looks on the inside. The 50'x100' lot was adorned with a new construction resting on the existing 900 sqf foundation that used to be a cottage. Adding another 500 square feet of flexible indoor and outdoor space proved to be a budget-saving solution as much as a space enlarging one. Bringing in daylight through a multitude of architectural solutions customized for this compact structure, architects from Ana Williamson Architect imagined this residence as a comfy, bright and open 1465 sqf home. Vaulted ceilings were designed to allow the use of clerestory windows, drawing in natural light, passively warming up the house during winter and keeping it ventilated throughout summer. "The new floor plan is organized along a vaulted central spine separating public and private zones. Large glazed bi-fold doors open the dining room to the patio, creating a courtyard. By maximizing the connection to the yards and creating accessible outdoor rooms, the entire site becomes integral to the everyday life of the homeowners and their young children." Employing sustainable solutions both indoors and outside, architects and clients collaborated to shape a durable, flexible and inspiring living environment: "The peaked brise soleil and front and rear decks are constructed with acetylated wood. This material minimizes water absorption, making it extremely durable and more dimensionally stable. The kitchen cabinets are faced with a high performance fiber composite veneer developed to be a timber free alternative. Both of these are relatively new products to the sustainable market."
