Formerly used as an office building, the Mews House currently serves as a private residence and photographer’s studio in London. The three level living space was structured by TG-STUDIO as follows: ground floor with studio/office, cloakroom and guest bedroom, first floor with entertaining space and open plan kitchen, dining and living area and second level with generously-sized master bedroom and walk in wardrobe.
The restoration process was challenging and implied a complete visual makeover: “The house was stripped down to its structural walls and roof, and reinstated as a new modern home. All of the external walls and roof were insulated and all windows and doors replaced. Some of the windows were extended to the floor with external Juliet balconies”. TG Studio were also responsible for the complete furnishing process, with outstanding results. All the interiors of this modern residence were ingeniously individualized with creative decorating additions- enjoy discovering them in detail!

Compact Single-Family Home in Seattle with Sustainable Features

SHED Architecture & Design has completed the Main Street House project, a compact single-family home in Seattle, Washington. The owners, a married couple of geologists, nearing retirement, approached the architects from SHED and asked for a sustainable home that both, opens to the outdoors, yet it retains a sense of refuge. Encircled by a lush green garden, the house features a metal-clad exterior softened by wood, to provide low-maintenance.

Unlike most of the modern homes that encourage the excessive use of glass panels, this is a house that highlights the idea of privacy. That doesn’t mean, of course, that light is not important. As a matter of fact, most of the rooms feel very open and airy, even with less windows. ”The primary aim of the clients was to develop spaces inside and out that engage the site and surroundings while retaining a sense of refuge. This was achieved through the arrangement of program and the composition of elements that work to focus views and extend enclosure beyond the building envelop.” Sustainable features include: heat recovery ventilation system, passive solar and ventilation, rain water detention tank and many others.

Masculine Details Stylishly Displayed in New York Penthouse

Designed for nocturnal entertaining, this New York penthouse apartment on the 13th street in the city’s East Village was imagined by Jane Kim Design in collaboration with Ben Shulman. The dark spaces with carefully re-imagined details like raw wood and exposed brick walls exudes masculinity and style. The 13th Street Penthouse showcases masculine details throughout, from the deep dark colors to the sleek design lines. Stainless steel appliances in the open kitchen were matched with glossy surfaces breaking the monotony and adding an extra dimension to the space.

Reclaimed wood was used to dress up the walls, as well as the kitchen counter, creating a fascinating result. By exposing the brick walls, a stylishly raw living environment was created. natural light floods the apartment via dark-framed windows and bounces off the remaining white walls. The stair leading up to the private area was stripped to its raw steel finish, maintaining the same overall design concept. Photographed by Alan Tansey, the home was designed in detail to offer its owners a simple and stylish entertaining environment. The bathrooms were not forgotten: the blue, white and grey master bath placed under a skylight reinforces the connection to the outdoors, while the guest bath shower is lined with textured slate and showcases a floor clad in striped Moroccan tile.

Modern Curved Roof House with Cottage-Like Addition in Scotland

House No 7 is a project completed by architect Murray Kerr from Denizen Works for his parents, on the Island of Tiree, Scotland. After carefully analysing the context and the original structure of the house, Kerr concluded that the best thing would be to rebuild it from scratch. He also planned to add two new additions, connecting them to the main house through the service unit. By mixing traditional features with modern “ingredients” he obtained a fresh new design. Naturally, the most intriguing design element used in creating such a darling place is the curved roof. Now, a house with an arch-like roof – that’s not exactly something you get to see everyday!

The stone cottage-like structure serves as a guest house. The main house, made of galvanised steel and corrugated fibre cement with a stone base (the same stone used for building up the rustic-inspired guest house), feels bolder and a little bit more modern. Ground floor comprises the bedrooms whilst living room, kitchen and dining area are all located on the first floor. Interior inspires breeziness and tidiness. “After rebuilding the old house, we had some stones left over, so we reused them elsewhere. The idea was to create a robust outside, contrasting with the light and airy space inside.”
