Powerful Design Statement Against Furniture Waste: The Trash Closet

design unconventional Closet Powerful Design Statement Against Furniture Waste: The Trash ClosetThe Trash Closet by Marijke & Sander Lucas utilizes leftover furniture that would normally end-up in a landfill. By incorporating leftover furniture to produce an outstandingly functional and eye-catching storage unit, the designers strive to inform individuals about our global furniture-waste catastrophe. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s statistics of 2009:  9.8 million tons of furniture ended up in landfills in the USA during 2009.

The possibilities of creating high-end furniture with recycled furniture in order for people to be more environmentally conscious was the primary motivating factor for the two Dutch designers: "Considering the environmental devastation occurring on a global-scale; ranging from deforestation in the Amazon to our global consumerism crisis, The Trash Closet is intended to be an aesthetic attention grabber with the purpose of educating individuals to be more cautious with what they do with old furniture", stated Sander Lucas. exterior unconventional Closet Powerful Design Statement Against Furniture Waste: The Trash Closet

The Trash Closet uses furniture that was found lying in the streets of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Most individuals would consider furniture in the streets as trash, but if you look closer to what we 'deem’ as trash, we can create beautiful pieces of functional art that can serve as an educational tool. The final prototyping, production, and conceptualization was sponsored by Dutch Design Only and is available as a limited edition. Would you consider having this item in your home? Dissolving Boundaries: Residence Encircled by Trees in Austin, Texas

Tree house Dissolving Boundaries: Residence Encircled by Trees in Austin, TexasMiró Rivera Architects completed the Tree House, a residential project designed with natural materials (timber siding and stone). The house sited in Austin, Texas, is encircled by trees and lush vegetation. The landscaped garden and the trees  have a strong positive impact on the lifestyle of the residents, encouraging a balanced living, closer to nature. The feeling of dissolving boundaries between the environments (living and outdoor), is enhanced also through the “excessive” use of local, natural materials. Large panels of glass replace the regular walls, to fully enjoy the expansive views of the courtyard and garden. Moreover, floor-to-ceiling windows make a house look larger and warmer. And what a welcoming and soothing home environment this is!

Luxuriant vegetation encircling Tree House Dissolving Boundaries: Residence Encircled by Trees in Austin, Texas” At the street front, the concave roof forms a low, unassuming façade that respects the scale of the neighborhood and provides privacy for bedrooms and studies. Simultaneously, the convex roof shared by the living, dining, and kitchen spaces opens the interior of the house to a canopy of oak trees and a small pool.”  The open space living room concept creates a feeling of lightness. The overall design looks modern but it keeps some of that childhood’s tree house aesthetic.

Butter Factory Transformed into Sculptural Modern Apartment in Australia

design modern apartment1 Butter Factory Transformed into Sculptural Modern Apartment in Australia Curvaceous and almost dizzying, this sculptural modern apartment located in West Melbourne resembles a contemporary art gallery. Transformed from a butter factory into an unconventional living space by the creative minds of Adrian Amore Architects, the place is intriguing to say the least. White walls throughout make a good background for twisted shapes and minimalist furniture. The color palette is kept simple- few objects disrupt the grandeur of the black and white duo- resulting in a sober, yet strangely appealing design scheme.

Some of the elements, such as the painted pipes and massive pendant lamps descending from the ceiling, give a way the building’s industrial heritage. The second floor accommodates the bedrooms. In between- a massive stairway that spirals all the way up to the roof deck. What do you believe are the perks and downsides to living in a place like this?  [Photographer: Fraser Marsden]

Weekend retreat LakeFlato Architects Compact Relaxing Home for the Weekend: Lakeside Retreat in TexasLake|Flato Architects designed the wonderful Lakeside Retreat, a compact relaxing home for the weekend. Located in Marble Falls, Texas, the property is surrounded by trees, offering a protective cover from the neighbours. With a direct waterfront access and cantilevered screened porches, the house is the perfect place to disconnect from a crowded lifestyle. The rear porch serves as an outdoor dinning room for the summer. It’s a rather romantic spot and it’s large enough to accommodate a family gathering. Summer days are filled with laughter and fun. Residents can indulge in a vast array of water sports, including kayaking and water-skiing.

The view is inspiring and relaxing. Without exaggerating, it’s medicine for the soul. Most of the materials used in completing the retreat are “Contributing to the casual atmosphere and occupant comfort are right-sized spaces for both large and small gatherings, modern efficiencies such as the lake-based geothermal HVAC system, and the family's commitment to outdoor living and dining embodied in the lofty screened porch.”
