PullClean is an extraordinary door handle and instant hand sanitizer developed by the creative minds at the British studio Agency of Design. The aim of the designers was to transform regular door handles- perfect breeding grounds for germs- into groundbreaking sanitizing devices. Even though this is a type of project that could be well implemented in any building, the idea is especially useful in hospitals, where some of the busy staff overlooks the process of hand washing. The worrying truth is that “Hospital acquired infections kill 100,000 people in the US each year,” as Jake McKnight, developer of the PullClean handle stated.

So how does this original door handle actually work? PullClean features a blue area at the bottom which releases hand sanitizer that does not require washing. The device also comes with a powerful CountClean software (patent pending) which monitors rates of hand sanitization, how much sanitizer is remaining in the handle, and when the cartridge should next be changed.

The information can be easily analyzed through a web portal. According to the developers, a pre-production prototype has been used in trials at a US hospital, and trials in a UK hospital are about to begin. Agency of Design reports that since installation, rates of hand sanitising rose from 22 to 77 percent. Groundbreaking 3D Printed Lamps: Breaking Bulbs Collection

Swedish company Gässling recently launched their innovative Breaking Bulbs collection, a range of 3D printed lamps capturing that split second in time when an object is destroyed on impact. The over-sized bulb-shaped lamps appear to shatter as if they are being dropped, smashed, and even shot. “I wanted to challenge myself and create object which would not be possible to produce using traditional manufacturing methods. The goal with the Breaking Bulbs project was to explore the 3d printing and find out how far I could push the technology. It's a project which lives somewhere in between art and design“, says Joakim Christoffersson, owner of Gässling.
Breaking bulbs are printed in a durable white nylon material, well suited for many purposes. The unconventional lamps are powered by a 6W warm LED and are delivered with a 12V 110V/220V transformer. Adapted to a Nomadic Lifestyle: Peliships Floating Shelves

American studio David Hsu Design, in collaboration with Elkamii, designed the Peliships floating shelves in an effort to rethink what modern shelving should be. In a world where we keep our belongings to a minimum, books and magazines are now available digitally, do we really need book cases or large shelving units? Peliships may be an answer for our nomadic lives. We all have a collection of our most treasured things. Perhaps it's a little toy car from our boyhood years, or little travel books to remind us of our trips abroad. Using Peliships, we proudly display these objects to show to our family and friends who we are and where we have been.

Peliships' form was inspired by boats and beaks of pelicans, hence its given name. It was designed to offer more style and uniqueness than other floating shelves. A closer look at the "hull", grains from its solid wood construction provides a metaphoric parallel to water ripples and barnacles, which sometimes mesmerizes the craftsmen who hand makes each one.
