| Two-story Contemporary Waving Home: Starr Residence in Australia Posted: 14 Sep 2011 03:28 AM PDT Starr Residence is a lovely home displaying an intriguing architecture. The project was designed by Brian Meyerson Architects and is located in an eastern suburb of Sydney, Australia. According to the architects,”the design of this house at Bondi Beach centers on maximizing space within strict height and bulk controls while taking advantage of available views, light and breezes. Arising from these controls, architectural imagery is developed referring to the cultural history of Bondi and to the sand and sea. A sweeping copper roof evokes various images ranging from surf boat hulls to breaching humpback whales. Stone, plywood and intricately formed concrete give spaces character. These materials are complemented by compelling opposites, such as soft sheer curtains with alternating with planes of solidity and transparency. The house attempts to lyrically connect to its beach-side site." Do you find this home’s exterior appealing or too extravagant?

| Tilted Concrete Sofa and Coffee Table by Taylor Donsker Posted: 14 Sep 2011 02:29 AM PDT Taylor Donsker has recently sent us two of his latest designs: The Tilted Concrete Sofa and Coffee Table. Here is the full description we received from the designer: “This project was an experimentation with the strength and plasticity of concrete, seeking to achieve a smooth finish with a thin profile. The design utilizes a calculated angle, for comfort in the seating position, to inform the design, resulting in a tilted profile. It is held together by interlocking pieces and gravity, no bolts. Commissioned by a client for outdoor use, the Tilted Concrete Sofa utilizes high strength concrete, fibers, and steel mesh reinforcement to span seven feet with a thin profile. The tilted armrest and backrest give functional character to the piece, causing users to lean back at a calculated angle for comfort. To make construction simpler, the sofa is reduced to four pieces that interlock with the thicker armrest, held together by gravity. Each table support has two different sides, roughly following the same design, but unique due to their hand crafted nature. They resemble the natural variations found in the concrete sofa as well as the reflection of water, responding to the table’s poolside surroundings”. Intriguing street furniture, wouldn’t you say?

Beach Haus is located in Burton Bradstock, Dorset, United Kingdom (about a three hour drive from London) and is surrounded by a large private garden and national trust meadows. Moreover, the building has access to footpaths leading to the beach. This means privacy is not to be questioned. The layout is practical, modern and provides an overall comfortable living space. Structured on three floors, you are looking at a home plan that intelligently maximizes the beautiful coastal views. | Modern Minimal Concrete House Near Zurich: Moinian And Meili Residence Posted: 14 Sep 2011 12:13 AM PDT The Moinian And Meili Residence by architect Felix Oesch is a dream home for the owners. Located close to the center of Eglisau, a town close to Zurich, Germany, the house sits on a sloped terrain. Home to a couple with design backgrounds, Christof Meili and Farzaneh Moinian and their young daughter, the residence displays a modern architecture designed to take full advantage of the opportunities expressed by the lot located between Schaffhauser Strasse, which links Switzerland to Germany, and the Rhine River. Capturing panoramic views of the river below while reducing the noise coming from the busy street, the architect constructed the modern, minimal concrete house the couple dreamed of in such a way that the kitchen, dining, and living space trio – with a partially covered deck in between – offers panoramic views of the Rhine. A second living room and two bedrooms lie on the ground floor, with an interesting bathroom that displays a mirrored image of itself and can be compartmentalized when the child grown and needs more privacy. Each detail was carefully designed to offer the inhabitants maximum comfort.
