| Modern Holiday Home in New Zealand: Screened by Pohutukawa Posted: 12 Sep 2011 05:55 AM PDT Screened by Pohutukawa is a residential holiday project designed by architect Evan Mayo of Architecture Bureau. Displaying a contemporary architecture in contrast with the old beach cottage that used to be enjoyed by the family, the new holiday house was built when the owners decided they needed a more flexible vacation home that would incorporate the needs of a modern family. Located in Mt Maunganui, New Zealand, the house situated on a private secluded property displays a beautiful Pohutukawa tree at the entrance. The interior spaces were built around the central idea of having a one bedroom holiday home. This plan turned into a larger one when the inhabitants decided to build three additional bedrooms for family and guests. All the living and private spaces occupy 135 square meters, with the master bedroom and living room capturing panoramas of the Pacific Ocean. A covered outdoor living area links the new holiday home to the old cottage, expanding the outdoor entertaining spaces and allowing friends and family to benefit from fresh air and a healthy lifestyle.

| 30 Spectacular Infinity Pools That Will Rock Your Senses [Part One] Posted: 12 Sep 2011 03:49 AM PDT When it comes to contemporary pools, some home owners prefer to let go of all physical limits. This is probably how infinity pools were born: by embracing a feel of absolute freedom and put it into practice. For today we gathered 30 contemporary pools that defy boundaries. You will probably find most of them spectacular, even unworldly. But we tried to keep things as realistic as possible, which is why we featured a few small-sized infinity pools as well. The most stunning designs are integrated in fascinating natural landscapes. In the photos below, some infinity pools face the sea or the ocean, so that swimming becomes a liberating activity. In case you are looking for other exquisite contemporary pool designs, not too long ago we published the most spectacular contemporary pools presented on Freshome (part one and part two). This post will also have a second round of mind-blowing infinity pool photos, so stay tuned!

| Fascinating Sculptural Glass Art by Artist Shayna Leib Posted: 12 Sep 2011 02:43 AM PDT Madison-based artist Shayna Leib created a series of beautiful glass sculptures entitled “Wind& Water”. Here is the artistic concept behind her mind-blowing works: “Two of the most powerful elements on our planet are nearly indiscernible to the human eye, yet we are innately aware of their presence, their capacity to soothe and destroy, and their ability to weave patterns where they touch. Wind and water possess no intrinsic color, are clear to the point of invisibility, and yet move through space. We see not their form itself, but can detect their patterns and shapes only vicariously though the objects they affect. The trace of water’s touch over moss and sea life, the wind’s passage over marshlands, through wheat fields and the fur of a long-haired animal- these two forces make their presence known. Their character is contradictory and fickle, encompassing fragility and violence, placidity and turbulence“. According to Colossal, each piece takes about a month to put together and the process involves generating over 1 mile of thin glass pieces which she then cuts into thousands of segments in order to complete the sculpture. | Home in Mexico Combining Warmth with Modern Design Posted: 12 Sep 2011 01:30 AM PDT ARCO Arquitectura Contemporánea designed Casa LC, an imposing contemporary residence located in Ciudad de México, México. According to the architects, the site is located in a privileged area, surrounded by a beautiful landscape with a golf course. The main entrance is marked by a corridor of water, which creates an original welcome for visitors and inhabitants as well. The interior features generous double-height spaces, combined with large windows on both facades, providing excellent lighting and views. The staircase leads to a bridge that separates the public and private spaces of the house. Towards one end of the bridge is the living room; the other side leads to the rooms of the children and the rest of the bedrooms. The composition of shapes, materials and great contemporary design are at the basis of this house which combines harmony, sensitivity and warmth.

| A Home Defying Architecture Symmetry by Rodney Walker Posted: 11 Sep 2011 11:48 PM PDT The Walker Residence was built by architect Rodney Walker and is a spectacular looking building located in Ojai, California. According to the official project description, “the carefully chosen site is a unique hilltop on the west side of the Ojai Valley which affords 270 degree panoramic vistas while still providing total privacy for the occupants. Curtain glass walls and mobile glass panels are set back beneath the roof eaves and structural perimeter. From the interiors the effect is cineramic. To steal from Wright; from this vantage you don't just see the Valley and the Mountains, you are the Valley and the Mountains! The experience is transcendent, and not fleeting. Communing with nature here is a moment by moment daily reality. The site is over 3.4 acres. A gated private drive curves gently up the hill to a generous parking plaza and the residence entry. In addition to the living areas, there are four bedrooms (one of which is currently used as a media room), and three baths”. Enjoy the architecture details of this project and don’t forget to give us your feedback! [Photography by Scott Mayoral]
