Mountainside Horizontal Space in Italy by Damilano Studio Architects Posted: 02 Sep 2011 05:54 AM PDT Showcasing a fascinating modern shape that can become a huge source of inspiration for many other homes, this next residence was designed by Damilano Studio Architects. Covering a built surface of 400 square meters, the residence named Horizontal Space is located in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy, in the town of Cuneo. Rising tall in a mountainside area, 800 meters above sea level, the residence displays a series of longitudinal spaces with constant height, creating two floors: the basement level – sheltering a garage and a games room – and the ground floor, featuring a large living room covered with wood floors and a series of public and private spaces. A long horizontal window links the kitchen to the outside views, while the other windows and hollow frames further connect the home to the surroundings. Looks like a perfect floor plan for a modern mountainside home, right?

Modern, Compact and Sustainable: Point Loma House in San Diego Posted: 01 Sep 2011 11:12 PM PDT The Point Loma house was designed by Macy Architecture/Jensen & Macy Architects and is located in San Diego, California. The owners wanted a residence that would be sustainable and make the most of the building site. According to the architects, “the house has been conceived according to passive solar and natural ventilation design principles. Horizontal sunshades shield glass from summer heat gain, while the interior is naturally ventilated via the central atrium and clerestory windows. The house's simple form is compact (48' L x 40' W x 23' H), minimizing the exterior surface area, maximizing thermal performance, and reducing electrical and plumbing runs. The living, dining, kitchen and master bedroom are located on the upper level and oriented to capture views of the Pacific Ocean, Mission Bay and La Jolla“. You could say that the most striking thing about this home is the fact that 95% of anticipated electrical needs are ensured by a roof-mounted photovoltaic system. A clever way to go, especially for a residence of these dimensions.

Largest Living Wall in North America: Semiahmoo Library Green Wall Posted: 01 Sep 2011 10:09 AM PDT The Semiahmoo Library Green Wall was recently uncovered in the White Rock suburb of Vancouver, Canada. Designed and constructed by North American-based design firm Green over Grey, the expansive living wall is the largest outdoor green wall in the region. The living wall covers 3,000 square feet and “consists of over 10,000 individual plants representing more than 120 unique species. It includes ground covers, large perennials, shrubs and small trees.” The living wall on the public library sets and example for other buildings – it s environmental benefits range from energy saving features to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “The large diversity of plant species chosen creates a balanced ecosystem that is an urban oasis for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. The living wall helps to insulate the building, purify the air and transforms the grey concrete into hundreds of shades of green.” declared Patrick Poiraud, Principal at Green over Grey – Living Walls and Design.

Fun, Original and Practical: Paint Brush Coat Hooks by Dominic Wilcox Posted: 01 Sep 2011 07:43 AM PDT Looking for unconventional ways to spice up the design of you hallway? Perhaps these paint brush coat hooks from creative powerhouse Dominic Wilcox can do the trick. Believe it or not, the idea hit the designer after discovering some paint brushes he had forgotten to wash. We find this idea to be quite ingenious, not to mention easy to do it yourselves. We also believe its practicability could be taken further. Why should paint brushes only be used as coat hangers, when they could do well for clothes of smaller weight too? Moreover, they have an intriguing appearance, making one inevitably think at an artist’s studio. The project was especially created for the Object Abuse exhibition at KK Outlet in London. For more crazy hook ideas, be sure to also check out 25 of the Most Creative Wall Hook Designs, a post that was published on Freshome a while back.
