Designing With Character: Ahmanson Founders Room in LA Posted: 31 Aug 2011 05:40 AM PDT Ahmanson Founders Room is a refined place for relaxation designed by Belzberg Architects and located underground, on the first level of the subterranean parking at The Music Center in Los Angeles. The 2,500 square foot relaxation area is now an original time out place, where people from downtown LA can escape the congested city and the noise. Despite its low profile, sunken location, the Ahmanson Founders Room showcases an incredibly stylish design, with a beautiful dim lighting scheme and material textures. The furniture is classy and comfortable, in tune with the overall design and atmosphere. According to the architects, the materials used for the ceiling and walls were low-grade douglas fir lumber and medium density fiberboard. We find it thrilling that tasteful design is being more and more integrated in developing socializing spaces such as restaurants and lounges. [Photographs by Fotoworks]

Overlooking California’s Rural Hillside: Summerhill Residence Posted: 31 Aug 2011 03:51 AM PDT Summerhill Residence, designed by San Francisco-based architectural studio Edmonds + Lee Architects, showcases its three separate volumes in a successful attempt to break architectural monotony. Covering over 4,000 square feet, the house shelters living, entertaining and relaxation spaces surrounded by the hills of California wine country. Located in Kenwood, in the Sonoma County, the Summerhill Residence fascinates with a suite of volumes, decks and patios that form a modern weekend getaway. Wishing for the surroundings to be as much part of the house as the interior spaces, the architects constructed the three volumes as a logical structure displaying wood and glass facades: the main living volume, the guest volume and the garage, all interconnected. The inhabitants are a couple living in San Francisco who wanted to enjoy the rural benefits in a modern setting. Sliding and swing door connect the interior and exterior spaces and intentionally blur the lines between the two. Fabulous weekend retreat, don’t you think?

Not Your Regular Workspace: Dreamhost Office in Brea, California Posted: 31 Aug 2011 02:37 AM PDT Studio O+A have completed a fresh and dynamic workspace for web-hosting company Dreamhost in Brea, in California. According to the designers, it was the young workforce that inspired such a vivid environment. Moreover, the building offered plenty of potential for an office space filled with light, as well as for informal gathering places. The designers chose to ensure broad circulation paths that allow employees to enjoy a “non-work” environment while getting from one office to another. Color contrasts of delightful visual effects are sad to emphasize on the technological innovation that the company is willing to achieve. The exposed white ceiling accentuates the informal feel of this place and is also in tune with the Dreamhost’s line of work. In case you were wondering, the black box in the middle is not the general manager’s office, but the conference room. Have a look at the photos and let us know how you appreciate the design of this unusual workspace.

Royal-Sized Hydromassage Bathtubs From Teuco Posted: 31 Aug 2011 01:23 AM PDT Are you on the lookout for a bathtub that is both fashionable and user-friendly? Perhaps these designs from Italian bathroom manufacturer Teuco will touch a soft spot and fit the profile. After checking out the company’s portfolio, we narrowed it down to three incredible looking designs from the Seaside collection that resemble small pools, rather than common bathtubs. The contemporary products feature built in hydromagnetic systems that make every bath a soothing experience. Moreover, their design is impeccable, allowing them to integrate easily in a large variety of contemporary bathrooms. Naturally, for a spoil of this dimensions, the owner has to let go of a few square meters of living space. But many consider that a small price to pay for having their own miniature pool in the comfort of their modern bathroom. What do you think? Do these designs fit your idea of ultimate indoor relaxation?

Modern Holiday Home Integrated in a Picturesque Swiss Landscape: Lumbrein Residence Posted: 31 Aug 2011 12:19 AM PDT Lumbrein Residence is a spectacular single family home especially designed by Hurst Song Architekten as a holiday retreat. The building is located at the periphery of a picturesque village and has unobstructed views of the mountain peaks in Graubunden, Switzerland. Here is a short project description from the architects: “Responding to the neighboring barns, the exterior is clad with vertical wooden planks treated with a dark protective coating. The gabled roof is inclined perpendicularly to the mountain face, following suit of the traditional architecture of the region. The elimination of the eave allows the standing-seam copper roof to meet the top of the perimeter walls, eventually aging to match their color. The central staircase is composed of spruce planks spanning the concrete partitions allowing light to filter through to lower levels. These materials pervade the interior surfacing the floors walls and ceiling with matching wood with concrete surfaces relating to the vertical circulation“. Visually stunning landscape aside, what do you think of the design of this holiday retreat?

Digitalize Your Ingenious Ideas in Seconds: Inkling Pen [Video] Posted: 30 Aug 2011 08:34 AM PDT The Inkling Digital Pen was created by Wacom and can turn your “pen on paper” sketches into electronic, vector graphics. What we find truly amazing is that the design allows its users to sketch on any piece of paper! A small receiver attached to the sketch memorizes the data written by the digital pen, which can further be transfered into any computer. According to the producers, “in addition to capturing your sketch, stroke by stroke, Inkling allows you to create layers in digital files while you sketch on paper. Digital files are transferred to your computer using the Inkling Sketch Manager software, and later, exported to applications such as Adobe® Photoshop® and Illustrator®. Files can also be opened with the included Inkling Sketch Manager software to edit, delete, add layers or change file formats.” Seen on DVice, the innovative Inkling pen is perfect for registering rough concepts and sudden ideas, for both designers and architects.
