Meditation Room Shaped Like a Japanese Lantern: Tea House by David Jameson Posted: 30 Aug 2011 05:41 AM PDT American architect David Jameson the beautiful Japanese inspired Tea House consisting of a suspended volume, especially designed in order to serve as a meditation room. Here is the official project description from the architects: “A hanging bronze and glass object inhabits the backyard of a suburban home. The structure, which evokes the image of a Japanese lantern, acts as a tea house, meditation space, and stage for the family's musical recitals. After experiencing the image of the lantern as a singular gem floating in the landscape, one is funneled into a curated procession space between strands of bamboo that is conceived to cleanse the mind and prepare one to enter the object. After ascending an origami stair, the visitor is confronted with the last natural element: a four inch thick, opaque wood entry door. At this point the visitor occupies the structure as a performer with a sense of otherworldliness meditation“. According to My Modern Met, the floating tea house is illuminated by floor lamps, which makes it quite spectacular to observe during night time.

Fun and Creative: Face Shelving by Alexi Mccarthy Posted: 30 Aug 2011 03:56 AM PDT Here is an original shelving unit that falls under the category “do it yourself”. The Face Shelving comes from Alexi Mccarthy and is a cheerful storage unit for books and various small objects. The designer tells its story as follows: “It started from a chat my girlfriend and I were having. A year and a father-son project later, the very originally named ‘Face Shelving’ is finally done. The idea is that depending what you put in or on the shelves, you create different faces and expressions.” Paying tribute to simplicity, this unit is truly ingenious. Even though it would look great in a variety of colors, we particularly like the choice of red, which makes things…explosively fun. Enjoy imagining how the face on the wall would look with various book combinations on it and let us know if the designer triggered your appetite for creating something similar.

Wood Chandelier Resembling a Disco Ball From Hrvoje Vulama Posted: 30 Aug 2011 02:44 AM PDT Zagreb-based furniture designer Hrvoje Vulama has recently sent us some photos of his enchanting chandelier design. Made of 258 separate pieces of oak wood and weighing around 15 kg, the interesting chandelier adds character and a feeling of hand-manufactured elegance to its surroundings. Finished with natural Tung oil, linseed oil and beeswax, the chandelier thrones in the middle of a room as if it was there from the very beginning. Its resemblance to a disco ball is amazing, but the choice of materials and carefully studied design lines bring it closer to a modern lighting object with a rustic impression. The designer explains how the wooden chandelier became more than an ambient light: “with this project I wanted to make an accent piece that caches the eye as soon as you enter the room. You either love it or hate it“. So, which one is it: do you love it or hate it?

Duplex in Prague Defined by Elegance and Creativity: Rounded Loft Posted: 29 Aug 2011 11:42 PM PDT We featured plenty of interesting looking apartments on Freshome, yet the Rounded Loft designed by Prague-based studio A1 Architects brings a new approach. The duplex is the result of turning a former attic space into a beautiful contemporary 2,368 square-foot home. Here is an excerpt from the official project description from the architects: “The issue of "boundless" space became the main motif of our work. The private spaces such as bedrooms are of course separated, but the rest of common activities rooms are connected within one fluent space. It starts at the entrance hall with dressing wardrobes and slightly continues towards living space and kitchen with large dining table, the space is also opened to upper gallery which is meant for guests. To reach specific fluency of space we decided to round off some of the interior corners, which finally give the space its unique smooth character. Due to these softened corners one moves and feel simply free and the boundaries of walls somehow disappears. Even the staircase with integrated fireplace and library climbs up in rounded corner.” Be sure to check out the sketches at the end of the post for a better understanding of the apartment’s structure and don’t forget to give us your feedback.
