Creative Portraits Made Using Thousands of Cork Bottle Stoppers [Video] Posted: 29 Aug 2011 05:25 AM PDT Scott Gundersen‘s line of work is not what one would call “common”. The designer and visual artist currently living in Chicago creates stunning portraits with the help of thousands of cork bottle stoppers. His intricate creations start off with a large scale photo, which Scott slowly fills up with corks. Each bottle stopper has its own, well chosen spot, in order to make the overall portrait as realistic as possible. The video at the end of the post is a film shot during the creation of "Grace", a 66" x 96" portrait which took no less than 9,217 wine corks and 50 hours to build up. We find the overall result remarkable, not to mention highly original. For more information, you can visit the artist’s Facebook page. Be sure to check out the creative process below and tell us what you think.

Contemporary Cabin with Intriguing Design Details in Washington State Posted: 29 Aug 2011 04:22 AM PDT This contemporary 1,300 square foot cabin was designed by Stuart Silk Architects and is located on Lopez Island in Washington State. The building accommodates a living area plus kitchen, two small bedrooms bedrooms and two bathrooms. According to the architects, “a single shed roof cantilevers over this space, evoking a sense of protection and blurring the distinction between interior and exterior. The material selections and construction methods emphasize economy, low maintenance, and energy conservation. Slab-on-grade construction is used for the interior flooring and adjacent terraces, simplifying construction and minimizing the use of raw materials. Corrugated metal siding and locally-sourced ground face concrete block (used in the interior spaces as well as the exterior) are durable, economical and true to the cabin aesthetic. Site disturbance is strictly localized, allowing for only minor construction grading that follows the natural contours of the site and preserves natural vegetation The concrete block walls and floor also serve as a thermal mass, regulating the interior temperature by storing daytime heat and releasing it at night“. How do you find this modern approach of a traditional cabin?

Fabulous Collection Piece: Walrus Chair by Maximo Riera Posted: 29 Aug 2011 02:48 AM PDT Spanish designer Maximo Riera creates furniture pieces inspired by the fascinating animal world. Not too long ago, we featured two impressive furniture items on Freshome belonging to the same designer: the Octopus Chair and the Rhino Chair. Walrus is another seating unit with an aesthetic effect that is both strong and fascinating. Based on the alluring features of the large marine Arctic mammal, this new design dazzles the mind and senses. Elegant, refined and imposing, the chair can be a great addition to a minimalist contemporary interior, as to an office with a sober personality. Even though its size is considerable, we believe it makes quite a dramatic impression, a detail that could make up for it taking up a lot of space. We are looking forward to further witty comments from all of you out there enthusiastic or simply intrigued about this creative Maximo Riera collection. Ready for more amazing design ideas? Inspiring Modern Residence in Mexico: The G House Posted: 29 Aug 2011 01:37 AM PDT Proudly displaying a modern design, the G House welcomes its inhabitants and their guests with a fascinating approach to contemporary residential architecture. Designed to respect the singularities of the property, the “layout departs from the site's recognition and also from the willingness to conquer the terrain after understanding its solar paths“. No wonder the residence is a contemporary display of modern materials and carefully studied spaces – the architects of Agraz Arquitectos created the rooms and intersection of volumes as a means of communicating with the surroundings while benefiting from natural light wherever possible. The main living spaces – kitchen, living room, dining room – have a south-eastern orientation, while the hallway receives light from a series of effective ceiling slots. Two exceptional design elements meet to create an interesting effect: the marble rugged wooden staircase, accentuated by a vivid red wall construct a fascinating space when caressed by natural light. The master bedroom and two additional guest bedrooms upstairs – each with relaxing garden views – welcome tired individuals and offer an oasis of stress-free interior spaces. How do you like this residence in Valle Real, Zapopan, Mexico?

Stylish Elliptical Mirror with a Strong Feminine Appeal Posted: 29 Aug 2011 12:20 AM PDT Pinch design is a studio from London which recently came up with a stylish mirror design called Iona Cheval. Here is a short description from the designers: “The Iona Cheval mirror is a full-length elliptical mirror framed in solid oak with a shaker-style joint and brass rivet detail at one side. The solid oak A-frame is finished in a matt white oil, allows the mirror to pivot, and supports an off-white lacquered drawer section, whose top doubles as a compact low dressing table“. We truly appreciate its feminine appearance, making it suitable for ladies’ bedrooms. Delicate and refined, the Iona Cheval mirror can easily be integrated in a variety of contemporary interiors, but works with traditional ones as well. We are curious to find out your honest opinions about this simple, yet intriguing mirror design. Find it as lovely as we do ?
