Serene Home at The Foot of Table Mountain, South Africa Posted: 17 Aug 2011 05:36 AM PDT Van Der merwe Miszewski Architects have recently completed a lovely architecture project called Mountain House and located near Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa. The residence has an original and captivating exterior. According to the architects, “the house is comprised of five pavilions which are tucked into the sloping terrain surrounded by the existing natural fynbos which stretches from the mountain slopes above the site to the road below. The five pavilions mimic the lie of the land and lie like leaves that have fallen down the mountain. The pavilions are in sympathy with the surrounding context in order to achieve as little visual impact as possible on the existing natural landscape“. Once inside, guest will observe that the surrounding natural landscape is brought indoors: “Habitable spaces have been created by using the age-old tradition of inserting stone walls into the landscape, thereby creating usable terraces and platforms. The colours of these stone walls emulate those of the cliffs of Table Mountain above and its presence anchors the design into the landscape”. Have a look at this serene looking home and tell us what you think!

Hyper-Realistic Paintings Featuring Well-Known Faces in Uncommon Situations Posted: 17 Aug 2011 04:33 AM PDT It’s about time these Hyperrealistic Paintings took the stage. Created by Tos Kostermans, a talented Netherlands-based artist – these remarkable paintings display the modern world as seen by an artist with a sense of humour. Painted in a combination of acrylics and oils, the art pieces were gathered in a collection named “Bold and Beautiful” in which “pretty women are playing the leading role and in which the man is often a minor role. Success, politics, prosperity, crisis, jealousy, in short, everything in life we are facing is addressed in the pictures.” Featuring Silvio Berlusconi, Mr. Creosote, Jack Nicholson, Tiger Woods, Scarlett Johannson, Keith Richards and others, most of the pieces in the collection are inspired by “the life in Puerto Banus, a small harbour village in the south of Spain where Tos has his studio.” The natural look and lifelike yet vivid colours used by the artist create a highly realistic feeling. Tos Kostermans‘ creativity is based on his surrounding world:”His inspiration for the diverse subjects of his other paintings, comes from his surroundings and his own awareness of life around him.” As the artist himself says, “it is all about life and humoristic situations.”

Marbelous Dining Table Combines Fun and Function [Video] Posted: 17 Aug 2011 01:02 AM PDT Forget boring dinners but watch your step! The Marbelous Dining Table can enhance your interaction with this kind of furniture. Featuring carved tracks for shinny marbles, the dining table’s design guides each marble down to its base. Designed by young Dutch design studio Ontwerpduo, the Marbelous Dining Table is made out of maple wood. One of the designers, Tineke Beunders, describes the inspiration for the fantastic dining table: “The world of adults furniture and the world children’s toys don’t seem to belong together. From my childhood I remember it was always exiting to combine these two. I used the woodcarvings of furniture as a playfield for my puppets, to play in a new world. With this feeling in mind we created a concept for a new piece of furniture.” This is how the Marbelous Dining Table came in existence – a combination of beautiful craftsmanship and fun marble tracks that keep you relaxed and allows you to enjoy each marble sliding down to the bottom of the table. Scroll down to see a video of the table and enjoy the photos taken by Lisa Klappe.
