Black and White Luxury Hotel Design: The Club in Singapore Posted: 16 Aug 2011 05:44 AM PDT The classic combination of black and white has come a long way since the early designs. Modern interior designers search for ways to make the two non-colours intertwine in the most spectacular ways. The Club luxury hotel is the proof that great design does not necessarily need colours to accentuate interesting shapes and patterns. Located in Singapore, the hotel combines traditional and modern design, creating a meeting point for two sources of inspiration: “The first is Singapore's colonial past, which we have made modern tongue-in-cheek references to through art installation like features such as an larger-than-life statue of Raffles with his head in the clouds as well as through some key furniture pieces and artifacts. The second inspiration was drawn from the area's popularity as a remittance center for turn of the century Chinese immigrants where hard earned money and wistful letters were sent back to the homeland.” The designer, Colin Seah of Ministry of Design, discovered a fantastic confluence of the “modern day nomad and the nomad of yesterday“, which he captured in the design of the hotel. Welcoming its guest with 22 unique rooms, a rooftop skybar and a tapas bar on the ground floor, The Club encompasses great design and luxurious features all in one place. Do you like it or you think that the bold colour combination is too much?

The bright space is furnished with modern elements that create an equilibrated workspace. The Swedish Pension Agency has broken the boundaries of artistic expression in a public space with commercial use. The planning and interior design of the large office space was created by Oberg Hadmyr Architects Ltd., an experienced Stockholm-based architectural studio. Having featured so many great designs from Sweden, this project only accentuates the idea of productivity and workplace happiness. The colour palette includes bold and vivid colours that create a fascinating dialogue between creativity and enthusiasm. The space is opened by the use of glass walls and connected by sliding doors. Tribute to the Swiss Alps: Echos Furniture Series by Pour Les Alpes Posted: 16 Aug 2011 03:10 AM PDT The award-winning “Echos” furniture collection was developed by Zurich- based Swiss studio Pour Les Alpes in response to a competition initiated by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. Designed to express a tribute to the Swiss Alps, the pieces display a design rooted in the alpine culture. The two young designers, Tina Stieger and Annina Gähwiler, managed to push the apparent boundaries of modern design by creating unusual shapes and interactions with their pieces of furniture. Echos furniture series by Pour Les Alpes displays three chests of drawers: “Ehrfurcht” (Reverence), “Neugierde” (Curiosity) and “Sehnsucht” (Desire). Three artisanal techniques still present in the Swiss alpine region were used to create three different chests: shingle-making, wood-carving and lace-making. Enjoy the pieces inspired from deeply rooted artisan techniques.

Using birch ply interior walls, green sedum roofs, special plinth foundations and sustainably certified timber, in.it.studios can build studio rooms for specific needs: “fully insulated, heated and serviced, the Garden Office is not your typical shed, it is an additional room to your home“. The studio builds garden offices, pavilions and homes – all custom made to fit the client’s needs. The example you can see in the photos is a 37 square meters garden studio split into a lounge room and a bedroom, with bi-folding doors leading out to the deck. The success of these projects is ensured by a team of craftsman and joiners who work alongside designers and architects to create custom cabins for multiple uses. How many of our readers need an extension to their home?

Sustainable PET Felt Chair: Pod by Benjamin Hubert [Video] Posted: 16 Aug 2011 12:40 AM PDT Benjamin Hubert‘s Pod Chair expresses the need for private relaxation – surrounded by a protective shell that cuddles you in a soft yet sturdy embrace. The British designer created this type of chair for Netherlands-based modern furniture company De Vorm. The felt used in shaping the chairs is created from recycled PET bottles, pressed into the mould. The chair’s shell is the largest object created by using pressed PET felt technology. Production includes cutting the material and stacking it on its wood base, while the finishing touches bring the chair’s design to a modern outcome. Constructed as a sustainable alternative to large upholstered furniture, the Pod Chair can be easily recycled as it does not contain a mix of glue, wood, textile, etc. Its contemporary shape and protective design can be successfully displayed in residential home, offices, commercial buildings or hospitality establishments.

L-shaped Residence in Mexico Showcasing Bright Interior Spaces Posted: 15 Aug 2011 09:59 AM PDT AA House, designed by Mexican office Parque Humano, is located in Mexico City, Mexico. Displaying an L-shaped floor plan with the living and dining room in the centre, the AA House is organized around an exterior landscaped space, designed by Pamela Burton. The rest of the rooms are arranged in a row, to capture as much outside views as possible thorough floor to ceiling windows. Overhangs provide shade and minimise glare, while the brick construction stands tall, reinforced by a steel structure. The architects describe the residence as follows: “This house is an exploration on the trace of a variety of formal and architectural lineages in the ongoing transformation of the modern dwelling that ranges from Neutra´s Kaufmann House to the Case Study Housing Program. This house was designed as a man-made pavilion for observing and living in close proximity to nature.” With a pool reflecting the passing clouds and sunshine, the house has everything you could even need to live a modern, comfortable life, don’t you think?
