Sliced Metal Sculptures Displaying Recognisable Silhouettes Posted: 12 Aug 2011 07:49 AM PDT Looking at these Sliced Metal Sculptures makes one wonder about the wonderful technologies we have access to. In order to invent new ways to be creative, artists strive to use the available technologies and information to create interesting exhibition-worthy pieces. Korean sculptor Chan Girl Park‘s works surprise well-known things in an unusual way – layers of thin metal are stacked on top of each other and cut to shape the easily recognisable silhouettes. Describing them as “sliced images”, the designer uses three-dimensional topography charts to plan where the next slice is going to land to form a 3D image. Found on MyModernMet, these sculptures represent a part of the artist’s work. Chan Girl Park had many solo and group exhibitions across Korea and China, so it seems that his works have touched a lot of people and impressed many visitors. We know we’re impressed, how about you?

Elegant Interior Design in Sao Paulo by Kwartet Arquitetura Posted: 12 Aug 2011 06:41 AM PDT Kwartet Arquitetura designed an apartment located in a residential neighbourhood of Sao Paulo, Brazil that gathers luxurious and comfortable modern furniture in a well-designed space. Rearranged for a young couple who travels quite a lot, the apartment was personalized to display a beautiful collection of travel memorabilia in the living room, creating a “travel corner”. The spaces were also prepared to welcome children in the future. A master bedroom, a guest bedroom and an office space that can eventually be transformed into a children’s room make up the private spaces of the apartment. The entertaining and living spaces are displayed around a central living room that features a comfy white Eames Chair that sets the tone for the colour palette. Some special items were custom designed by Kwartet Arquitetura for this residence: “We specified the finishes and design all the woodwork. We also design the upper door trim higher, up to the ceiling, to create a sensation of higher high ceiling. The baseboard follow the same concept. The Tauari flooring and the wood home theater panel provides a warm atmosphere contrasting with the bright yellow bar table and gray buffet lacquer. Classic design pieces stand alongside contemporary ones. The headboard was built with eight mdf panels upholstery with linen and sconces fixed on the surface. The white and golden petit poa wallpaper and the dark blinds dressed the room.”

Concrete Home Accessories: Speakers and Coffee Machine Posted: 12 Aug 2011 03:43 AM PDT Espresso Solo is the conceptual product made from a concrete case and metal working parts. The interesting concrete espresso machine makes two kinds of espresso: short and long. The other object created by the same Israeli product designer Shmuel Linski – Exposed – is a set of concrete strange-sounding speakers that slightly distort the sound due to the choice of material. But this is solved by the designer’s “Horn speaker technology“. Choosing to expose concrete in an interior world where this material is hidden by other decorative elements was a bold move. “The design process begun in choosing the material: I choose concrete. I had a vision: concrete in the kitchen, not only as a wall or decorative part, I wanted it to be a desirable consumer product. The contrast between the roughness, massiveness and hardness of the concrete and the fine metal parts, which are dealing with the coffee preparation process, was very challenging and interesting for me“, says the designer.

Wary Meyer’s French Dresser Inspired by Lou Dorfsman’s CBS Wall Posted: 12 Aug 2011 01:30 AM PDT The designers, husband and wife design team of Wary Meyers, found this 1920s veneer dresser in Maine and, although they did not need it for their home, the piece of furniture had too many beautiful details and perfect proportions not to be bought. Having paid $10 for it, the team transformed the found object into an amazing typographic dresser. Both designers are fans of three dimensional letters, so the French Dresser became a combination of 3D lettering, vintage design and modern colours. The first impulse was to paint the letters on, but a second examination convinced the designers to use 3D lettering instead. Inspired by Lou Dorfsman’s CBS typographic wall, the dresser’s typographic facade makes use of French words describing the contents of each drawer. Labelling drawers with the content, it made it easy to keep it organized and the result adds character to the decorative exterior. Such an object can only bring admiration and respect. Volumes and Voids: Browne Street House by Shaun Lockyer Architects Posted: 12 Aug 2011 12:08 AM PDT The Browne Street House spreads over 330 square meters on an urban lot in Brisbane, Australia as a modern reinterpretation of Queenslander architectural typology, showing the evolution of local style. Designed by Shaun Lockyer Architects, the house displays forms that meet and intersect to create volumes and voids that shape the residence into a interesting collection of architectural elements. The first floor features the kitchen as the main space connecting all the other rooms – the heart of the house. Upstairs, three bedrooms and a family room compose the private areas. Timber details on both the interiors and exterior facade visually connect the house to its surroundings and inspirational architecture style. Wooden slates and a black wood privacy screen sheltering the master bedroom construct a themed appearance, while large glazed windows and openings connect the interior spaces with the exterior surroundings. The sloped terrain helped guide the design of the garage under the floor containing bedrooms. As you can see, the residence keeps a strong visual connection with the surrounding architecture, integrating in the Australian architectural landscape.
