An Original Frozen Yogurt Shop in Manhattan: Flavaboom Posted: 09 Aug 2011 05:59 AM PDT Flavaboom frozen yogurt shop was designed by Dune (also responsible for the interior graphics) and is located in Manhattan, New York. We decided to present this project on Freshome, because we consider it quite original, not to mention inviting. According to retail design blog, the concept for this unique yogurt store is an ultramodern, futuristic laboratory. We really appreciate the color palette, and consider it to be a key factor of attraction, especially for children and adolescent girls. The 1500-square foot shop also features numerous light shows also aimed at attracting passers-by. The materials used to decorate the interiors were very well chosen: vibrant pink faux-leather, plum-hued mirrors and other interesting details fill up the place creating an original atmosphere: “There is an indestructible quality to the materials.Being eco-conscience means not needing to redo a project. Longevity was a key factor.", asserted Richard Shemtov, president and founder of Dune. [Photography by Albert Vecerka ]

Mind-blowing Floating Stage on Lake Tosca, Bregenz Posted: 09 Aug 2011 03:44 AM PDT Bregenz is a lovely city located in Austria, famous for the annual summer music festival called Bregenzer Festspiele. The mind-blowing opera on Lake Tosca was a great success over the years, with almost 150 000 participants during recent editions. For today we decided to present this stunning looking floating stage of impressive proportions especially put together for Umberto Giordano’s opera Andrea Chénier. We consider this scene found on TrendsNow to be overwhelming, which is why we could not help from sharing it further. Amazing light shows, stunts and talented actors make this representation a unique opera experience. But as you can probably imagine, the stage is different for every performance. Bregenz has thrilled its guest on many occasions, with highly original settings and spectacles beyond belief. Freshome readers, are any of you out there classical music fans? And if so, what was the most touching performance you’ve attended? [Photo credits: Bregenzer Festspiele / Karl Forster]

Architecture Based on an Intriguing Concept: Barcode House Posted: 09 Aug 2011 02:32 AM PDT Barcode House was designed by David Jameson Architect and is located Washington, D.C. The residence gets its name from an interesting exterior design detail consisting a series of horizontal lines which resemble a giant commercial barcode. Here is more from the architects: “Barcode House explores juxtapositions between the heavy and light and the old and the new. The work is formed by positioning the project's diverse pressures into a unique situational aesthetic. Brittle masonry walls of the existing Washington, DC row house governed that the addition be engineered as a freestanding structure. Site constraints dictated a vertically oriented spatial solution. The client's desire for transparent living space generated the opportunity to create an integrated solution for lateral force requirements. Structural steel rods within a glass window wall are aligned with datum lines of the neighboring building elevations. A stucco circulation tower anchors the living space to the existing row house“. Weekend Retreat Close to NYC: Pawling Residence Posted: 09 Aug 2011 12:54 AM PDT SPG Architects were the ones who designed this residence located in Pawling, New York. Featuring 3,330 square feet, the house sitting on 5 acres was built as a weekend or vacation home for a couple living in New York. An interesting and powerfully relaxing feature is the 2-story bedroom space that “seamlessly link with the main living areas, which contain living, dining, and kitchen functions. A dining terrace and a private master bedroom suite garden are defined as exterior rooms by concrete half walls that are extensions of the main house form. The gestural roofline slopes upward from the closed front facade to the more open rear facade and provides a sense of soaring relief as the occupant moves from the entry court to the expansive views beyond.” The outside space in the back garden features a pool and plenty of space for sunbathing and excellent entertaining. With low natural stone walls that decorate the green lawn, the garden looks like the owner’s little hillside.
