Roundy Residence by Miller Hull Partnership

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 12:55 PM PDT

Miller Hull Partnership have designed the Roundy Residence on Lopez Island in Washington State.

.

Description from the architects:

Located in the San Juan Islands of Washington State, the 10 acre site contrasts between gently rolling fields that abruptly terminate in a 100-foot-high bluff that drops to the water's edge below. The juxtaposition between these two conditions led to the architectural concept.

High westerly winds from the water blow against the bluff concentrating forces at the top. The house mediates this force by creating a wind break. Stretching along the bluff are the living areas, the entry porch and the garage. This north south oriented wing is highly glazed to take advantage of the long range views over the bluff to the islands.

In contrast, the private functions of the house, the bedrooms and guest rooms stretch east west opening to protected garden areas and a terrace created on the leeward side. Doors open onto a south facing continuous porch with glazed roof. This area has been designed to take advantage of passive solar heating in the winter while providing shading during the summer months.

At the juncture of the house is a two story tower element which contains an art studio and office space. A solar hot water array on the roof provides domestic hot water and augments the hot water hydronic floor heating.

House Lam by Nico van der Meulen Architects

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 05:37 AM PDT

Nico van der Meulen Architects have designed a remodel of a 1950′s house in Bedfordview, a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa.

.

Description from the architects:

The original house was north-facing, but on an extremely limited level platform: The site has a five storey fall from the south-east to the north- west corner.

Werner van der Meulen  designed the infinity edge pool to extend over the steep fall, placing it on a single 3m diameter column, cantilevering nearly six metres.  He created a massive rock clad wall which bisects the building on a north-south axis, then transforms into a huge red-painted beam which helps to support the lanai roof.

Frameless stacking doors fold away to create a seamless indoor/outdoor sensation, with the pool jutting into the living area with the doors open.

The original foot print area was extended to create extra garages and a new first floor added , which houses three suites, a pyjama lounge and a kid’s study. Staff accommodation was placed on top of the new garage.

The original two kids bedrooms became a study, and the original main suite a guest suite.

The ground floor living space was gutted, and a large open plan, partially double volume living space housing the family room, dining room, kitchen and ancillary spaces created.

A new 6x13meter lanai next to the pool was added on the only piece of usable land on the north side , growing out of the mountain, with spectacular views to the north and west.

The original cellar was retained as a wine cellar and a home theatre with views into the pool.

Eliz Lamp by Stal Collectief

Posted: 03 Aug 2011 01:54 AM PDT

Belgium-based Stal Collectief have created the Eliz Lamp.

.

Description from the designers:

The lamp "Eliz" forms a contrast between the elegant base and the large felt hood that seems to float above it.

This adjustable lamp creates an intimate space and ensures a pleasant light zone and can be used in living room, waiting rooms, restaurants or as event furniture.

The frame structure consists of birch plywood and is supported by a thin metal base. The synthetic felt can be replaced by veneer or a plexiglass cover for outdoor use.
