| Nestlled Inside an Original Lamp : Matreshka Light Chair Posted: 20 Apr 2011 06:09 AM PDT The famous Matryoshka Doll inspires plenty of projects in the world of design. Today we would like to showcase the Matreshka Light Chair, an original seating unit with an incorporated lighting system. Here is more from the producers: “The product is unique not only with its form, but also with the fact that it is a lamp in which you can actually sit. The built-in LED RGB lighting in its upper part can be remotely controlled, it allows thousands of colour combinations (including white for reading) and it fades in and out. It can be used also as a lamp. The base allows endless 360° rotation both ways. The chair invites and embraces you, it enhances and dominates your emotions. The soft curves of the female body come to life in the form of fibroglass in two main colours – white and black.” Freshome readers, what do you think of this idea- extravagant, practical or both?

| Stunning Apartment Design in Moscow with Original Details Posted: 20 Apr 2011 04:28 AM PDT Miroshkin Michael and Miroshkina Elen from Geometrix Design have completed the interior of an apartment located in Moscow, Russia. Here is the description of the project called “Fantasy Island ” (from the designers): “Through the entrance lobby we get into the large sitting-room, where with the help of extendable glass partitions the kitchen area is detached. This decision determines the prescription of every zone logically, but at the same time doesn't overload the space and makes it unique, light and airy. The main emphasis in the interior is focused on the home theater zone. This is not only the necessary part of the sitting-room but also the complete art-object. The switched off TV panel "ad notam" becomes the invisible part of big black glass panel with the all round embedded light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The construction arrests sight and its prescription astonishes. And in this case the idea aesthetics doesn't pinch the functional purpose: we mean, the space for keeping CD and books on each side. Under the glass there is the commode with drawers, and all the construction continued straight to the ceiling in the form of lustrous panels with the built-in luminaires (lamps). The luminous decisions wide choice makes the interior change according to mood preferences. There is the "jack"(special thing) in the kitchen: the transformer –table with the remote control. One touch-and we get the dining-table, or bar counter. The bedroom with a big quantity of windows has the separate WC-and-bathroom unit and the dressing room, of course. We've took in (admited) the natural light into the WC-and-bathroom unit with the help of frosted glass, which was used as a partition. Also there were used natural materials as wood and stone. The beauty of two noble materials was underlined with the combination of colors.Fantasy and reality were interlaced in this project. And they made the wonderful "duo" of aesthetics and functionality. “(Photographs: Zinur Razutdinov) Ready for more amazing design ideas? Check below !

| Could This Be the Future of Camera Designs? [Video] Posted: 20 Apr 2011 02:38 AM PDT The WVIL Concept Camera comes from Artefact and is a “vision” of a camera of the future. According to psfk, WVIL stands for Wireless Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens and the patented system combines the features of a smartphone with the ones of a photo camera. Here is some technical information from the official site: “When attached, focus and zoom are driven directly by the lens rings – with direct visual feedback – letting you keep your eye on the subject. These same indicators come to life and let you take control of the lens remotely by touch. At the end of the day it's all about sharing and remembering with others. Share your experiences right from your camera – not the next day when you get home. No waiting, no wires. With the same connectiity and app platform as your smartphone, you can share through your favorite service from anywhere you have cell service. Why carry two devices when one will do it all?” Photographers out there, we would love to know your professional opinion about this concept!

| Small Manhattan Apartment: Unfolding Apartment by Normal Projects Posted: 20 Apr 2011 01:31 AM PDT Inspiring small apartments are extremely valuable in a global society with increasing lack of space in large urban areas. If you too have a small apartment and think that it seems to be less space every day, think about how it would be to live in a 450 square foot studio apartment like the one found on Monkeyzen. Versatility and compactness are the two words that describe this miniature apartment. Thanks to an ingenious space arrangement, the apartment has everything you need: living room, kitchen, breakfast nook, bathroom, pull-out work space, a closet, bookshelves, lighting, a sofa bed and an extra bed for guests. The inhabitant, Eric Schneider, is happy to have his own small Upper West Side studio apartment, after living for a year in one half as size in Japan. Designed by Normal Projects, the Unfolding Apartment is described by its creators as “Bigger than furniture; smaller than architecture “. A large blue custom-made cabinet contains much of the fold-down and pull-out furniture of the apartment. The architects, friends of Eric’s, needed to comply with one major request: a Murphy bed, which they cleverly incorporated in the cabinetry piece. With Eric having friends over twice a week, he needed a space that would encompass an entertaining and comfortable lifestyle. His love for cooking was the reason for a well-planned kitchen, featuring a large counter that doubles as a dining table for three. The photos taken by Alan Tansey capture every detail and set an example for future projects.

| Interesting Renovation of an Old Home: Rotterdam Villa Designed by Ooze Posted: 19 Apr 2011 10:15 AM PDT Designed by Ooze, the Rotterdam Villa is an expressive architectural residence recreated with the spirit of the surroundings in mind. The early twentieth century building received a makeover in 1991, when it was enlarged and another one in 2003, when three more rooms and some other facilities were added. The current owner thought that the house had too much unused space and its potential needed to be exploited. The design of the house was thus reorganized around a central void, with a new staircase on the north wall connecting the first and second floor. The outcome was a bright and social space. Using solid wood prefabricated panels to shape the roof, walls and floor, the architects created a lightweight structure. The designers explain the significance of the project: “Inside, the building manifests itself through a formal language based on prefabricated, solid wood triangles that have a direct reference to the old roof. Folds and facets were generated by an intuitive rationalism following what was permitted and what would benefit the space inside. This skin becomes the structure which sits like a hat on top of the existing one and works as a load carrier to bring down the additional weight burden of the new floors and roofs. The house is a precedent in establishing a new culture of dealing with an existing structure.”

| A Bit Playful & a Bit Deceptive: Splat Mirror Posted: 19 Apr 2011 09:12 AM PDT We recently received an interesting project from Kooyong Design, a young Irish furniture and product design studio run by Davin Larkin. According to the designers, “Splat is a bit playful, a bit deceptive and a bit outrageous but also functional! With its bold colours and striking appearance you will want to look twice in the mirror every day. Splat was developed from the idea of a drop of paint splashing on the floor combined with the idea of a cracked piece of glass. Combining the two ideas we came up with the striking appearance of Splat that works just as well on its own as it does in pairs and more. Splat has been laser cut out of Acrylic and hand assembled in our studio. It is currently available in three colours; red, orange and black.” Enjoy the splash of color below and let us know what you think of this idea!
