| Exquisite Apartment Occupying SoHo’s Former Police Headquarters Gymnasium Posted: 15 Apr 2011 04:27 AM PDT Once an architectural building has surpassed its original purpose, some bright minds repurpose it into exceptional interiors. This is the case of SoHo’s 1905 Beaux Arts Police Headquarters Building, which has been transformed into a unique and outstanding residence. Evaluated at $14,500,000, the Gymnasium Apartment is the only interior completely renovated by world renowned and acclaimed architect Charles Gwathmey. His valued creativity constructed a majestic private residence that would accentuate the building’s historic landmark significance. The 6,000 square foot apartment features four bedrooms with en-suite and a half bathroom. As described by the architect: “The intention was to physically maintain and visually exploit the volumetric integrity and structural expression of the existing barrel vaulted space, while adding a master bedroom suite and study/library balcony, and integrating an eclectic painting and sculpture collection.” We have only the architect and history to thank for such a successfully repurposed building.

| Turn Your Crib into a Living Garden with Magnetic Pots [Video] Posted: 15 Apr 2011 01:43 AM PDT Urbio Vertical Garden is a project aimed of transforming every urban home into a living garden. According to Kickstarter, “Urbio is a magnetic system that will help us transform any wall or ferrous surface into a beautiful vertical garden. Each pot is made of eco-plastic and is equipped with large neodymium magnets that are strong enough to hold almost anything to the wall. The wall plates are modular, and can easily be mounted to any wall. Mount just one Urbio pot, or fill your wall with them. Alternatively, each pot comes with its own individual puck that can be used to mount to the wall. These pucks can also be used to attach pots together for a nice centerpiece“. At the present time, Urbio Vertical Garden in just a concept, but we are hoping this post will make a contribution to it being produced at a large scale. We are certain the video below will win you over and make you want to join our cause:

| Cement Factory Conversion into Residential and Exhibition Spaces by Ricardo Bofill Posted: 15 Apr 2011 12:23 AM PDT Ricardo Bofill is the proud inhabitant and creator of one of the best architectural reconversions. An old cement factory became the playground of a fabulous array of art and culture. On a surface of over 3,100 square meters that used to serve as an industrial building, the architect recreated a space of wonders, grouping different spaces with various artistic and residential purposes: offices, archives, a model laboratory, an exhibition space, Bofill’s apartment, guest rooms and gardens. The abandoned cement factory became a vestige that would incorporate a contemporary understanding of space based on repurposing an excellent building. By demolishing some structures and exposing previously hidden elements, the factory was transformed into a luscious collection of spaces during a process that lasted two years. The three main elements – the cathedral, the garden, and the silos – were sculpted in a new shape. The residential part retained the industrial accents but Bofill re-imagined the lofty interiors with high ceilings by adding contemporary furniture and casual decorative elements. Gardens filled with luscious eucalyptus, palms, olive trees and cypresses complete the exterior while offering a glimpse of the luxuriously restored interiors. Exquisite in every detail, the Cement Factory found on Yatzer bounds two distinct ages and merges styles through a fabulous design. Ready for more amazing design ideas? Check below !

| Fresh Apartment with Vivid Colors in Hong Kong :The RAINBOW House Posted: 14 Apr 2011 10:17 AM PDT We recently received a welcoming and colorful home design by Max Lam, the Chief Designer of Moderne . According to the press release they sent us, the Rainbow House is a “830 sqf flat at The Cairnhill in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong. The entire concept is inspired by a RAINBOW. The main colours of this home are green, yellow and red. The rainbow goes from the living room to the dining room, from walls to ceilings, thoroughly decorates 11 feet high ceiling, and then goes over the hidden room door. The unique stainless steel lamps together with the colourful settings, contribute to a sharp and trendy environment. Max combined the two rooms into one, in order to enlarge the space. A green wall and an orange wall make a strong contrast, which lead to a conceptual differentiation between bedroom and study room. The built-in white shelves, desks and high cabinet in the study room are simple and functional. All the 60's and 70's contemporary modern classical furniture came from designer's invaluable collection from many European countries, including designer pieces by Joe Colombo, Rodolfo Bonetto, Olaf Von Bohr, Marc Newson, Anna Castelli Ferrieri, Giotto Stoppino, Erik Magnussen, etc. All these classics make an inspiring contribution to the playful and colourful Rainbow House.” Freshome readers, would you live in an apartment with this much color?

| An Original Design: Transparent Chair by Nendo Posted: 14 Apr 2011 08:21 AM PDT Transparent Chair is a project envisioned by Japanese design firm Nendo and was created in order to serve as a relaxing seating unit. According to the designers, you are looking at “a chair made with polyurethane film, a transparent film commonly used as a packing material for precision instruments and products susceptible to vibrations and shock, thanks to its high elasticity and ability to return to its original state. Looking at the chair, it seems to consist of nothing but a backrest and armrests. It wraps and supports the body like a hammock, providing a light, floating feeling for the sitter“. Found on Oh Gizmo!, the design will be exhibited during Milan Design Week 2011 at Galleria Jannone. What do you think? Fun, odd or both? ( images © Masayuki Hayashi )
