Majestic Hotel Overlooking the Fabulous Santorini Caldera Posted: 11 Apr 2011 07:10 AM PDT Designed by Greek studio Divercity Architects in collaboration with mplusm, Grace Santorini is a beautiful 20-room hotel with astonishing views. Combining luxury with amazing services, the hotel is highly inviting, particularly if you take in consideration its beautiful swimming pools and welcoming interiors. Here is more from the architects: “The hotel provides a contemporary interpretation of vernacular architecture: economy of space, radical simplicity, and organic forms. Like Santorini's yposkafa – cave-like dwellings with rounded walls and domed roofs excavated from the rock-face – no furniture is free-standing. Custom-built storage and vanity units are moulded into alcoves. All-white interiors with brushed concrete floors reiterate the trademark whitewashed houses of the Cyclades. The infinity pool's jagged outline echoes the zigzag paths that criss-cross Santorini's sheer terrain. Santorini's hotel rooms are invariably front-loaded to face the view, leaving residents exposed to passers-by. To ensure privacy, fragments of volcanic rock are positioned in the windows of four rooms, interspersed with apertures that provide glimpses to the sea.” Nothing short of mesmerising, the views of this hotel left us speechless, which is exactly why we would love to read what you have to say about this project. Coffee Table Inspired by a Photo Album: Remembrance by Micth Steinmetz Posted: 11 Apr 2011 04:56 AM PDT Micth Steinmetz recently came up with an original coffee table design. Resembling a giant photo album, this table is a unique addition to any living room, adding personality and creativity. According to the designer, “the photo album preserves memories, giving life to past events and emotions. Remembrance combines the social interaction of family gatherings with the nostalgia and enjoyment of remembering the past. Instead of acting as a liaison  between the user and their entertainment, Remembrance becomes the source of  entertainment. It creates new memories while simultaneously cataloging and cherishing old ones”. We don’t know about you guys, but the only “fault” we could find in this design is the fact that it is a bit inaccessible when it comes to cleaning and dusting. Surprising Apartment Design in Paris: Le Loft des Innocents Posted: 11 Apr 2011 03:30 AM PDT Le Loft des Innocents is an inspiring and amazing looking apartment in Paris, redesigned by Frédéric Flanquart after an accidental fire had destroyed parts of its former interior. Here is an excerpt from the designer’s description: “The outlook of this area turned really fast into a crazy challenge: design and achieve a shell-free space with – as reference marks- only half-burned out staircases -leading to the lower level-, a huge scaffolding structure used as a roof, and a 360° view over Paris. The client wanted something new, ambitious and creative, in order to turn over a new leaf after 10 years spent at the loft. We came up pretty quickly with the idea of a quiet and relaxing place during the day switching to a genuine place of mystery and pleasure at night. Straight or slanting, geometrically random at times, the work of lines highlights every detail. The loft, a filled with emotions project, combines complexity, simplicity and lightness.” We really love the effect the wooden beams have on the overall appearance of the apartment. From playing out in the yard with the kids, to enjoying neighbors over for a barbecue on the back patio, it's never too early to start planning. Adding a summer kitchen to your outdoor patio maybe just the piece that is missing from yours! Portable grills are nice, but summer kitchens allow you to plan an entire area for relaxing, preparing and serving food, and it can add value onto your home. Here are tips for choosing amenities for your summer kitchen. Determine your entertaining lifestyle: Summer kitchens are perfect for those who enjoy cooking outdoors as well as entertaining. While entertaining could be guest or neighbors, it can also be your immediate family. Determine how often you enjoy cooking outdoors, and what size area you can dedicate to adding a summer kitchen. For smaller patios, an outdoor wall dedicated to a grill and sink may be sufficient. While a larger patio may have a stand-alone summer kitchen, complete with dining area, refrigerator, grill, sink and counter area. Assess what you enjoy cooking: Summer kitchens that have several amenities are the ones that get used more often, depending on what you enjoy cooking. Amenities such as cooking grills, griddles, rotisseries, and even ovens and warmers can make your cooking experience more enjoyable. Summer kitchens that have sinks, refrigerators, freezers and wine coolers can help the avid cook avoid running back inside the main house several times while entertaining and cooking. Comfortable lounging area: While the actual cooking area is important, don't forget about the lounging and leisure area for your guests. Depending on your decorative style and the layout of your patio, determine how much and what type of seating will suit your needs.  Movable lounge chairs and tables are ideal for versatility while built in benches and seating area can be permanent and enhanced with decorative cushions and throw pillows.  Ensure seating area isn't too far removed from the summer kitchen area for guest interaction, but not too close for smoke and food odors to affect your guests. Know your budget: Similar to other parts of your home, a summer kitchen can take on a life of its own before you know it, and you can spend more than you budgeted for. Playing For a Practical Design Cause: Biblioteca Tetris [Video] Posted: 10 Apr 2011 11:26 PM PDT Guillermo Cameron Mac Lean from Argentina recently sent us this fun and playful bookcase design that won us over. You are probably all familiar with Tetris, a game with millions of fans throughout the world. We featured quite a few Tetris inspired projects on Freshome and yet we could never get tired of seeing designs that remind us of playing it. As you can see in the movie below, Guillermo slowly builds his bookcase using various shaped Tetris blocks.As opposed to how things occur in the electronic game, the rows don’t collapse at the end, but are as steady as the small wheels below allow the bookcase to be.
