| Pipes and Handles Combine Fun and Function: Coat Racks by Nick Fraser Design Posted: 01 Apr 2011 06:09 AM PDT Nick Fraser Design is the mastermind behind these creative and unusual coat racks made from a series of intertwining pipes and handles. With handles painted in bright red and a selection of deep black, grey, blue or white pipes, with beautiful golden accents, the Coat Racks have an industrial appearance, helping the interior design of a home reach new artistic heights. Repurposing everyday items and reformulating the success story of coat hangers, Nick Fraser created a furniture item that combines fun and function. Part of the Pipeworks Series, these racks are available in two versions: a larger coat rack that comes with four sets of red handles and the smaller version, made from a single straight pipeline. Enjoy the pictures and don’t forget that you can buy both versions from Nick Fraser Design.

| Contemporary SPA Design in Istanbul by Hirsch Bedner Associates Posted: 01 Apr 2011 04:25 AM PDT Hirsch Bedner Associates' (HBA) recently completed design for the much-anticipated ESPA spa located in the Istanbul EDITION hotel. Here is a short description from the project developers: “The contemporary spa was inspired largely by Turkish traditions, with design elements that echo the Hammam customs and atmospheric elements of Istanbul. This juxtaposition of the old with the new create a uniquely contemporary and luxurious space. Elements like embossed bronze floors, chocolate brown marble, cast bronze sinks, walls of crystals and lighting effect gives the spa a warm, rich and mysterious ambiance. There are very few straight walls or corridors in guest areas and that helps to make the spaces mysterious and allows guests to discover new areas as they journey through it. Crystals are delicately integrated into the spa design in their most natural state. Their faceted edges, which glisten in the light, reinforce the atmospheric feel while exuding a distinct sense of luxury and elegance. The play of light was one of the main component in the design inspiration and was drawn from the faceted cut out patterns found in a traditional Hammam.” Freshome readers, in your opinion, what are the most important elements to consider when designing a SPA center?

| Architecturally Complex with Spiralling Enclosed Garden: White O Residence by Toyo Ito & Associates Posted: 01 Apr 2011 03:21 AM PDT For a home that has a rather futuristic look, the White O Residence is a very comfortable place to live. Designed by Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects, the 370 square meters dwelling sits on a gentle slope allowing the architects to take full advantage of the site in designing the unusual structure. A partially enclosed garden complements the spiralling backside of the house. The sloping terrain meets the house in the garden, melting the living spaces with the exterior in a unique and wonderful way. At the entrance, a spacious living area takes us to the dining room and further on through a corridor, to the bedrooms. These private quarters are elevated from the ground and offer privacy and relaxation. Located in Marbella, Chile, the residence has a fluid connection between the outside and inside space. Do you think that these types of new and personalized constructions are gaining more attention due to their architectural complexity or their response to the surrounding environment?

| Diverse Makeover of an 80′s Residence: The Garden House Posted: 01 Apr 2011 12:44 AM PDT In this post we would like to present a 1980 home renovation completed by Brazilian architect David Guerra. According to the architects’ description, “one of the main wishes was to make the interior/exterior integration bigger, making the garden participate in the day-by-day of the house, bringing more light to the rooms that used to be too dark. Another important point was to make this house more modern, giving new spaces and new way to use them, compatible with a new lifestyle and a new epoque of new residents. Integrate spaces, destroy walls, transform doors, windows and attach protection covering, substitute products, recuperate structures, new electric, new hydraulic, new illumination, an atelier, a wine cellar, gourmet kitchen, bathroom, sauna, deck and pool. The reconstruction was huge. Natural characteristic, neutral and raw tones give coziness. Furniture with the bottom distant from the floor, that goes from the stick feet and armchairs, and acrilic chairs have the intention to make the spaces bigger, light and fluid. The mix of styles, which goes from the 50's, pass by the classics, ethnics, contemporaries, are incremented with Brazilian references”. Have a look and let us know what you think!

| Playing with Volumes and Perceptions: Tregunter Apartment in Hong Kong Posted: 31 Mar 2011 08:00 AM PDT Designed by Davidclovers, this amazing crib located in Hong Kong seems to puzzle the senses. Found on Dezeen, the project is a renovation of a tower apartment overlooking the Victoria Harbor. Here is a short description from the architects: “Nestled amongst a forest of towers on Old Peak Road above Central Hong Kong, the Tregunter tower holds unique layered views of Victoria Harbour. The abundance of bay windows, structural walls and beams that are common to residential towers would appear to constrain the possibilities of the apartment. However, by turning constraints into opportunities, David Clovers re-works the volumes of this apartment by using the ceiling and the floor. Subtly elongating, pressing upward, and sloping downward, the ceiling produces variable sensations of compression and expansion – making the apartment seem larger than it is, drawing delicate lines that separate dining from living. Skillfully dodging and maneuvering around air-conditioning units and structural beams, the ceiling integrates artificial light and various materials – re-orienting the apartment toward the exterior. The minimal use of wood and plaster shift the elevation of the apartment (typically on the walls) to the horizontal surfaces – enhancing the outward/upward thrust of the ceiling.” Freshome readers, are you fans of asymmetrical design ideas or do you prefer the more classic approaches?
