| Sustainable and Visually Captivating Residential Addition: The Sapphire Gallery Posted: 31 Mar 2011 04:42 AM PDT The Sapphire Gallery was designed by XTEN Architecture and is located in Los Angeles, California. The owners wanted a home addition that would accommodate their contemporary art collection which includes works of famous artists, such as Gregory Crewdson, Uta Barth, Tomoroy Dodge and Jennifer Steinkamp. Moreover, their collection is expanding and the Sapphire Gallery had to provide a suitable space for both present and future works. According to the architects,” the new structure is grafted onto the circulation spine of the existing house and lifted off the ground to provide a minimal footprint. Freeing the ground plane creates a new multi-functional hardscape/landscape area for the family that they use as carport, children's play area, for art parties and video projections.” The Sapphire Gallery is also a sustainable project:”An array of photovoltaic cells on the South facing sloped roof produces an average of 15kWh per day, enough to supply all the energy for the new building with a surplus directed towards the main house.” (Photography by Art Gray)

| How to Stage Kid’s Rooms when Selling your Home Posted: 31 Mar 2011 02:31 AM PDT If you're in the home buying or selling market and you have children, one of your main priorities is the home environment of your children. Similarly to the master bedroom for us, your kid's rooms is where they will spend much of their time growing, learning, studying and relaxing. When trying to sell your home, make sure you are able to set the "stage" for creating the perfect environment for homebuyers' children. Here are tips for staging your kid's rooms when selling your home to make it appeal for the next children moving into your home.
Staging your kid's rooms should be an enjoyable experience, and give homebuyers a reason to make your home the top of their "make an offer" list. Many home sellers underestimate rooms that are not directly tied to adults – such as only concentrating on the kitchen, and master bedroom. While these rooms are important, there is an emotional attachment to kid's rooms, and these are the spaces that should be well attended to when preparing to sell your home. The best compliment is to have homebuyers come through your home with children and to hear their children squeal, "This is my room!" Freshome reader's do you have any advice for staging kid's rooms? We'd love to hear your comments. Ready for more amazing design ideas? Check below !

According to the description we received, the project was designed by architect Enrique Barascout and “is a perfect hideaway of absolute privacy and comfort. | Incredible Seating Unit Made of 5000 Metrocards by Steve Shaheen Posted: 30 Mar 2011 07:14 AM PDT Steve Shaheen has recently completed an original seating unit entitled Metrobench and created using 5000 Metrocards. Here is the concept behind the design as explained by Steve: “Metrobench is a conceptually-driven sculptural seating element using recycled materials (New York City Metrocards). I was inspired to use these discarded objects–at once very personal and expendable–in a way that reflects the manner in which mass transit joins many diverse lives into a single moment or path together. The Metrocard represents movement for people; Metrobench is a point of rest for people. Millions of New Yorkers, with their separate lives, are brought together on the transit system every day. In this sculptural seat, each card, with its distinct and intimate history is stitched together into a fluid tapestry. Metrobench was assembled completely by hand, card by card. Using Craigslist, I harnessed the people of New York to help me gather 5,000 Metrocards in under a week. There is something very personal about handling so many small belongings that were once riding around in peoples' pockets. There are untold personal stories in that inconspicuous, flimsy plastic.” Did you ever think Metrocards could be this practical? Ready for more amazing design ideas? Check below !
