| Inspiring Wine Country Home Renovation in California Posted: 29 Mar 2011 05:02 AM PDT This beautiful wine country home located in St. Helena, California was recently redesigned by Schneider Design Associates in collaboration with Jean Larrette Interior Design. Even though the owners of the home initially wanted only a kitchen remodel and a bedroom addition, they ended up optimizing the design of the entire residence and adapting it to its beautiful surroundings. According to the project developers, “the design takes advantage of the sweeping vineyard and ridgeline views and transforms a dated ranch style house into a contemporary weekend retreat. The design connects the interior spaces directly to rooms created in the landscape through the use of two large doors on axis with the Living Room, Dining Room, and pool. The layout allows for effortless transition between inside and outside, perfect for summer living and entertaining.” Be sure to pay attention to the last two photos of the post in order to get an idea of how this home looked before the renovation.

| Modern Office Building with a Stimulating Informal Atmosphere Posted: 29 Mar 2011 01:36 AM PDT Design agency Concern in collaboration with de Architekten Cie designed the office interior for ZLTO (Southern Agriculture and Horticulture Organization) in Den Bosch, the Netherlands. Here is a short project description from the architects: “The building gives ZLTO a modern presence, with the facade reminiscent of waving fields of grain and barns, whilst at the same time being a state-of-the-art, representative office building; an embassy for agriculture with a clubhouse atmosphere. By situating vast open spaces with stairwells along the elevation, visual contact is possible between all floors. These spaces function as informal meeting places, helping to promote and stimulate the new world of work. The entrance projects a warm welcome to the visitor with its comfortable informal atmosphere; leather sofas in combination with an open fireplace illustrate the ZLTO approach. The restaurant extends an invitation to enjoy lunch, and the long wooden benches encourage interaction and conversation. Multi-tasking work points furnished with printing and copying facilities also function as informal gathering points and are located throughout the building. The expressive timber roof structure, complemented by the arched vertical window bands, imparts character to the clubhouse.”

| Designed for Creativity: Leo Burnett’s New Office in Sydney Posted: 28 Mar 2011 10:23 AM PDT “When you reach for the stars you may not quite get one, but you won’t come up with a handful of mud either.” This is just one of the quotes Leo Burnett, one of the advertising “gurus” of all times, is famous for. Today Leo Burnett offices are spread all over the world and their creative work is both fascinating and efficient. Their new office in Sydney was designed by HASSELL and respects the company’s values. Here is more from the project developers: Reflecting the core social and interactive nature of the way a creative agency works, the layout is open, spacious and filled with natural light. Thought provoking spaces encourage the 'generation of big ideas.' Creativity is fostered by making the 'work' and creative process visible in the belief that creativity is a collaborative process. The workplace is open, light and connected to the surroundings to reflect the creative process. Pitching for new business is a vital function. The 'pitch' space is purposely located away from the entry to create a journey that would tell the story of the agency. The journey starts with LCD's showing rotating images of staff and then continues past the workplace and communal area, telling the story of the process and the culture of the agency. Freshome readers, do you have a favorite advertising agency?

| Sophisticated Australian Residence: the Elysium 154 House by BVN Architecture Posted: 28 Mar 2011 09:16 AM PDT The sophisticated Elysium 154 House in Queensland, Australia was designed by BVN Architecture as part of the Noosa project, a residential development in the desired Noosa Heads neighbourhood of Queensland. According to the architects, the house is situated in an urban site “consisting of 189 house allotments, communal leisure facilities (tennis courts, health spa, aquatic facilities) parkland and nature reserves located inland from the Noosa coastline adjacent to Lake Weyba. The undulating, picturesque landscape of the site retains vast pockets of existing vegetation and is afforded distant views to the Sunshine Coast hinterland beyond.” The site slopes gently from the street to the south. The architects created a residence that offers views of the northern parkland areas and connects the inside of the house to the outside space with the help of external textured wall finishes that continue on the inside. The exterior garden and pool complete the luxurious subtropical picture. Just imagine what this house would look like if you lived there: the design, the personal items, the colours – all gathered under a perfectly balanced architecture. | Open Air Climbing Net for Children Sheltered by the Hakone Pavilion Posted: 28 Mar 2011 07:56 AM PDT Designed by Tezuka Architects, the Hakone Pavilion is an astounding architectural masterpiece created by piling up more than 500 timber logs. The construction is part of the Hakone Open-Air Museum, opened in 1969 as the first open-air art museum in Japan. Using 320 cubic meters of timber, without the help of any metallic parts except for the concrete base fixtures, the architects constructed the Hakone Pavilion in a sheltered space of the Museum’s grounds. It was built for the enjoyment of kids and features a climbing net for children created by artist Toshiko Horiuchi Macadam. Built as a protective space from rain and harsh sunlight, the Hakone pavilion conveys a feeling of playing outside, surrounded by nature. “Cutting-edge structural analysis has been employed to overcome the variability that characterizes timber. While employing traditional wood joints we have searched for a futuristic form, which should result in a completely new type of architecture.” When in Japan, take your kids to enjoy the astounding architecture and works of art at the Hakone Open-Air Museum.
