| Fascinating Cabinets Built From Ship Planks: M.&Mme by Valentin Loellmann Posted: 28 Mar 2011 02:15 AM PDT M.&Mme is an original furniture collection designed by artist Valentin Loellmann. Here is the concept behind his creations: The pieces I makes have always developed from a curiosity; a curiosity towards materials, their travels and the stories they tell. With this project, I try to use the stories of my materials in order to create new and strong narratives with them. The traces of oil and salt water in the bankirai wood that is used in the pieces presents a nostalgia towards their previous lives as ship planks, but the old craftsmanship experienced within this material is provided with the distinct contemporary signature of the creator. If you look closely, you will notice a human element is added to the designs, which makes the “story” behind the creation more authentic.

| Office Tower With Undulating Glass Façade in Seoul Posted: 28 Mar 2011 12:58 AM PDT GT Tower East is an impressive contemporary office tower designed by the Dutch architectural firm ArchitectenConsort and located in Seoul, South Korea. With an original undulating glass façade, the building is said to bring a fascinating change to the angular architecture of the Korean capital and mirror the surrounding urban landscape. Here are some further details about the 130-meter high tower from the architects: “Within its gross 54,000 m2 of floor space, GT Tower East fulfills a range of purposes. In addition to functional office spaces, there is room for commercial and cultural uses, as well as parking. We achieved the high adaptive capacity of GT Tower East by placing the compact core at the heart of the floor plan and using a carefully thought-out column structure. These measures ensure that the facade remains entirely unencumbered, and large floor spaces are created that allow the building to accommodate a variety of uses in the future. Many sustainability measures were integrated into the design, including a well-insulated facade, the installation of solar panels for generating power, and a lot of natural light and ventilation to create a pleasant working environment.” In the end, we would like to know your opinion on this architecture approach. | Fascinating Handmade Sideboard: “Volumptuous” by Edward Johnson Posted: 27 Mar 2011 09:02 AM PDT One look at this amazing sideboard would probably lead one to believe “Volumptuous” by Edward Johnson is a work of art. Lucky for us, it is also a functional furniture piece of great design inspiration. “Volumptuous’ is a truly unique sideboard, a piece that tested me as a maker and made me feel uncomfortable as a designer. Using the latest of material technology, ‘Volumptuous’ is handmade in Oak and internally lined with the aromatic Cedar of Lebanon. The once square frame work was hand shaped to follow each laminated panels form, and then lightly fumed with ammonia to achieve the chocolate brown colouring. Volumptuous is as sensuous as furniture gets, visually stimulating, enticingly tactile and beautifully scented. It speaks a thousand words about what I believe my work is about.- stated designer Edward Johnson. Freshome readers, did you build any sideboards lately?
