| Diverse Three Room Apartment Inspiring a Pleasant Atmosphere in Stockholm Posted: 22 Mar 2011 06:41 AM PDT With an ideal location in the heart of the Ostermalm area, Stockholm, this well organized and tastefully renovated apartment of 83 square meters is in top condition. The modern loft features a generous living room with exit to the balcony, an Italian designed open plan kitchen, peaceful bedrooms and additional bedroom / study, exclusive and stylish bathroom and spacious dressing room with plenty of storage space. Even though this apartment is filled with interesting decorative ideas, the living room stands out due to its unique design. The ample space is perfect for both a sofa and dining area for many guests (the attractive kitchen island / breakfast bar provides an additional dining area). The dark blue sofa, colorful pillows and orange painting contrast the white walls of the apartment and ensure an overall pleasant atmosphere.

| iPhone Controlled Kitchen Island Hides in the Floor When Not Needed [Video] Posted: 22 Mar 2011 04:16 AM PDT Even though this may seem like an illusionist’s act, the kitchen island in the video below is as real as it gets. Tim Thaler needed a versatile kitchen that could provide plenty of space, but in the same time wanted an island for storage. In a mind quest for how to do both, he came up with the ingenious solution of having a retractable kitchen island. Here is Tim’s description of the project: This is my kitchen island, below is an unfinished utility/storage room. A hydraulic scissor lift is at bolted to the cement, and then a small frame is built on top of the scissor lift table. On top of that is a subfloor, flooring, and then the island. The cabinet doors are on the other side, and have safety push button switches that kill the electricity from the Smart Home Insteon switches, and prevent it from moving when the doors are not fully closed. This lift can easily lift over 1,500lbs, so it was an important safety feature! Please comment if you are interested in seeing the inner workings of this. Believe it or not. I used IKEA boxes and hardware with custom walnut fronts built by Scherrs.Be sure to have a look at the video below to see how this fascinating design goes in and out of the floor at a touch of a button.

| Sophisticated Contemporary Architecture: Marquis Estate of Cherry Creek Posted: 22 Mar 2011 02:33 AM PDT The modern and sophisticated Marquis Estate of Cherry Creek is located in a fascinating upscale residential neighbourhood, in Denver’s Cherry Creek. Situated at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Saint Paul Street, the amazing property covers a surface of 7,066 square feet. Merging glass, exotic woods, stainless steel and natural stone, the architects created an elaborate architectural design. With the help of floor-to-ceiling glass, the residence was flooded by natural light. Besides having 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, a double-height living room and a gourmet kitchen and living area, the residence includes custom features like the oversized, three-car garage, a 1,200 bottle climate-controlled wine room, a home theatre, an indoor heated saltwater lap-pool and indoor hot-tub. Other luxurious features mark the extraordinary comfort of this residence: a spa-like centre with a home gym with steam shower and a spa and massage room. Additional contemporary features appeal to the visual pleasure: a beautiful glass bridge connects the library mezzanine to the executive office and there are special places in the house that offer a beautiful panorama of the mountains.

| Minimalist Desk Light Inpired by a Black Stork’s Beak: “Ciconia” Posted: 21 Mar 2011 11:25 AM PDT We recently received an interesting lighting project from Topdeq in collaboration with Saxon light manufacturer idee.design.licht. Here are the photos together with the project description: “Designer Rainer Bachschmid created a novel design concept that was inspired by a stork's beak. Hence the name "Ciconia" , the Latin name of the black stork. The lamp's base and LED head form two symmetrical segments that can fold in and out like a beak or a pen-knife. One half contains a shining strip of thirty integrated LEDs, the other half bears a reflecting strip made of stainless steel. Unfolded, Ciconia floodlights the desk top – folded in, Ciconia is a stunning, minimalist light sculpture that graces private living spaces just as elegant office environments. Ciconia's body is made of aluminum, powder-coated in black. The complete production process, from metal working to painting, assembly and packaging is integrated under one roof at idee.design.licht.” Freshome readers, would you go for a minimalist table lamp as opposed to an eclectic one?

| Asymmetrical Shaped Home with a Well Adjusted Architecture in Japan Posted: 21 Mar 2011 09:10 AM PDT Ysy House was designed by Nagoya-based studio Auau and is located in Seto, Japan, in a beautiful but populated forest, on top of a small hill. The charming asymmetrical shape of the residence is well adjusted to the building site and is interesting to observe from every angle. With a matte white finish, the home is very well differentiated within its neighborhood and is quite an attention-grabber. The main entrance seems partially hidden by original panels which wrap the whole building in a shell-like surface. The home is structured on two levels and the asymmetrical walls make the interiors unique. The arrangements are minimalist and modern, the contrast between the floors and white walls creating an appealing visual effect. (Photographer: Masaya Yoshimura)

| Creative Advertising Prints for Dutch Book Week: Written Portraits Posted: 21 Mar 2011 08:01 AM PDT Dutch literature is promoted every year through an event called the Dutch Book Week. This edition is dedicated to (auto)biographies, as each year a different genre is being profiled and popularized. Written Portraits was the winning concept for the current advertising campaign promoting the event and was envisioned by Markus Ravenhorst and Maarten Reynen. The company that put the campaign together is called Van Wanter Etcetera and the artwork was created by Souverein. The series is quite impressive and features amazing prints of realistic-looking book sculptures portraying famous personalities such as Vincent Van Gogh, Anne Frank, Louis Van Gaal and Kader Abdolla. It is nice to see creative advertising campaigns dedicated to promoting culture and we are more than happy to share this uncommon design idea with you all.
