Delightful Apartment Design in Slovakia by Neopolis Posted: 18 Feb 2011 05:27 AM PST Studio Neopolis completed this charming apartment in Banská Bystrica town in the middle Slovakia. Take a look at the photos below and if you have any inquiries, here is the project description: “The interior is designed for young single man which is truck driver, so he spends a lot of time out of home. Requests for design and visage was simple – minimal clear design with minimum of decorations and with use of basic colors – red, black and white (the client is big fan of KISS). Also, there was a request to hang as many as possible pieces of furniture at the wall, without the legs – for automatic vacuum cleaner. The color of floors and doors was set – oak wood, but the other colors was chosen in the philosophy of: less is more. Beside the red, black and white color there is only one more color – gray, which makes the whole interior less aggressive.

Fresh and Modern Office Studio by Dom Arquitectura Posted: 18 Feb 2011 03:11 AM PST Pablo Serrano from Dom Arquitectura shared with us his company’s latest project, Dom Studio. Here is the description we received: “The place previously used as a store was completely isolated from the outside. The first action we took, was to open the interior space, both the street and the garden outside, so we designed a completely open iron carpentry without studs, continuous glass, providing natural light throughout the space. All the iron is dark graphite gray painted, the same of the interior furnishings. Across the glass surface is placed inside a dark gray screens, to control the space privacy. As an Architecture studio, we have some details about the profession, the graphite color of the pencils, the prevailing white color like papers and the wall parallel. The inner wall of the room is very irregular. With the goal of unifying all these folds we proposed some horizontal lines that run through the wall, painted with the same gray that the continuous pavement. This allowed us to provide the wall of a plot in a gradient, starting with getting rid continuously and gradually breaking up until the roof. We designed the Lamp that runs around the room, from some sections of iron flowing freely through space with convergent and divergent lines, covered with several sheets of folded parchment paper, as if they were the same studio plans. The result is an enlightened paper path through the roof. We propose an edge distribution, where 6 tables are based on the exterior side. In the same perimeter is placed a dark shelf, which runs through the space, we can put all the books and magazines worker’s hand and hide the strip turn providing the facilities for all jobs. The bathroom walls are painted in dark as an inverted room, the plan annotation dimensions remain drawn on the walls. We wanted to give this space a color point, and we loved the Campari lamp by Ingo Maurer, finally decided to reinterpret it with green Carlsberg bottles.” Ready for more amazing design ideas? Truly Inspiring: Eclectic Furniture Collection Made from Recycled Materials Posted: 18 Feb 2011 01:59 AM PST It is always great to see design projects reinvented. Design by Leftovers from Stockholm agree that the old, discarded and forgotten can be reborn. Creating new impressions and expressions, Linda and Jona Netsman launched this vibrant furniture collection that has so much originality to showcase. All the items in the photos below were reconditioned and re imagined and the results are nothing less than spectacular. The old furniture and fabrics used suffered serious upgrades due to inspiring and colorful improvisations. According to Homedit, the collection is composed of sofas, armchairs and cabinets, all bearing pretty extravagant prices. (Charlotte’s Leftovers sofa in the 1st photo is tagged 9250 Euros). But as we mentioned in the title, we are certain you will find most of these items inspiring and we dare you to let your furniture reinventing skills flow.

Majestic Home on a Cliff’s Edge Overlooking the Pacific Ocean Posted: 18 Feb 2011 12:14 AM PST Villalucy is a beautiful contemporary residence located in Port Townsend, Washington and designed by wpa Studio. The 1,400-square-foot house overlooks the Pacific Ocean and seems to hover above a natural cliff. Here is a… poetic description from the architects which we found highly captivating: “The house wpa designed is an antidote to the introverted routines of city living. The house is perched rather than planted. Like an anchored branch, it floats above the soft fragile ground below. Here what’s happening outside is given first billing. The life of the house is a reaction to it. You enter the house through a bar – an attenuated service zone dense with the practicalities of bathrooms, kitchen, storage and utility supply. Beyond the bar, the real living rooms are entirely open to the view and interpretation. This space is purposely abstract – stripped of air registers or built-in furniture, any tagging suggesting how it might or should be used. The house is a lookout, a delicately detailed observation platform from which to view what’s beyond rather than a set piece in a highly articulated domestic drama. Here you are exposed, even susceptible, to the moods and rhythms of the land you see and the light you see it in. And because the house is not tied to any set script, you are free to respond. The identical steel moment frames that make up the structure of the building were fabricated offsite. This pre-fabrication minimized the staging area needed to build the house. Since the erection of the frames could be choreographed precisely, the balance of the construction could take place in the air – on a platform supported by these frames hovering en pointe above the existing topography. Over the course of the construction, phases of the work were scheduled with the help of a wildlife biologist to protect an eagle’s nest with newborn chicks 60 feet off the house. “(Photography by Lara Swimmer)

Charming Sustainable Home in Washington With an Inviting Interior Design Posted: 17 Feb 2011 10:42 AM PST The Hill House was designed by David Coleman Architecture and is located in Winthrop, Washington. According to the architects, the project is composed of a 20′ wide x 115′ long stepped platform, a shelter formed by the roof and east wall, and several gabion stone walls. It is sited on a long, narrow, rocky hillside, sloping gently to the south and steeply to the east and west. The building reads and lives like a habitable landscape, adapting to the changing seasons and needs of its occupants. Sustainable materials, technologies and techniques are used throughout. Recycled steel, sustainably harvested wood, BIBS insulation in oversized wall and ceiling cavities, on-demand hot water, low-flow fixtures and convection heat are just a few of the strategies employed. In short, this is a modest, sustainable building with a big presence in a big landscape. We were truly impressed by this home’s flawless interior design and the overall warmth it inspires. Creative and Affordable Indirect Wall Lighting DiY Project Posted: 17 Feb 2011 07:59 AM PST DiY projects often offer valuable decorating results with a small investment. All cool and new shows us how to recreate a stunning effect of indirect lighting in your own bedroom using only a few basic materials that cost no more than 40 Euros (around $55). The project creator’s apartment was inspired by furniture, ideas and architecture shown on Freshome and this next DiY project shows how anyone can create a stunning indirect light effect in the bedroom, just like the ones seen on inspirational websites. It's a very unique and customizable project that can be built to fit your own taste. Choosing the suitable laminates for your bedroom can easily create a gorgeous ambiance. The inspiration for this project came from a visit to a multimillion modern villa in the south of Holland. The project is described step by step and you can watch a video of the final result below. For this project, you will need three main materials: tube lights, laminate flooring planks and wooden studs to create the space between the wall and the planks. The tools you will be working with are: “a screwdriver, a saw, a level, extra strong mounting glue, screws, some hook screws or special nails to guide tubes and possibly some nails or tape to help the glue on the first planks dry properly.” First of all, draw the outlines of the project on your wall, so you know where everything is supposed to go. Draw a line where the light tube will be and be careful with your decision, because you need to be able to see just the indirect light, not the tubes whether you sit in bed or admire it from the bedroom entrance. For the best results, draw the lines at average eye height. What to do next: “Guide the light cable along the inner line you drew by holding it with hooked screws or cable guiders. The power cable of the light tube needs to connect to a power source so the location of that end of the wire can be important. Therefore you might want to start guiding the tube from that point so you always know the power cable can make it to your power source.” After the lights are up, you need to mount the planks on the wall and cover up the lighting mechanism: “Saw the wooden stud in random parts and spread them evenly over the wall where the planks will have to be glued on. (We left a part untouched to keep the option of mounting in an LCD screen in the future). How you secure the studs on your wall depends on the material your wall is made of. Usually screwing them on will do. Make sure they are secured tightly though. Follow the instructions with the laminate flooring planks and saw them where necessary. Probably the best way to do this is by building the whole 'floor' flat on the ground. ” “Once you know the lengths are right and the connections are all on the proper side you can start gluing the planks to the studs. Start off with the bottom planks and make sure they are perfectly level. The bottom planks might be put to some force once you start pushing the upper planks on them to connect, so make sure the glue is dried before you put force on those bottom planks. To hold the planks in position while the glue hasn't dried yet you can use tape to secure it or hammer some (temporary) nails underneath the planks to hold them in position. Once the bottom planks are secured you can just 'click' in the other planks and glue their backs to the studs. Connect the power and the project is done!” If the light shows at the end of the planks use painter's putty to seal the project and don’t forget to enjoy your finished work!
