Beautiful Minimalist Family Home with Intriguing Architecture Details Posted: 17 Feb 2011 06:17 AM PST Found on designboom, Villa Geldrop is a charming contemporary home in the beautiful style of Hofman Dujardin Architects, located in The Netherlands. According to the architects, the house is situated at the end of the site next to the existing barn. Through a long cut in the landscape the house is anchored to its environment. Under the ground level the bedrooms are located at this long sectional patio. The large living with dining area, kitchen, study area and playing area are located at the ground level and the 1st floor. Through voids, roof lights and high passages, a tremendous spaciousness is created. The spaces which are located in the axe of the landscape are used for the sublime experience of the landscape. Minimalist and highly elegant, the home feature floor to ceiling windows, allowing a good indoor/outdoor connection. How to Design your Room Decor around your Bold Area Rug Posted: 17 Feb 2011 04:57 AM PST Have you ever come across a beautiful and bold area rug that you had to have, and once you got it home you thought, "How am I going to design my room around this?" Bold area rugs can be a bit menacing if you aren't sure how to pull the complimentary colors from it, or how to bring your overall design style to coordinate with the rug. Instead of passing up that gorgeous rug, look at these tips to help you design your room decor around your bold area rug. How to choose a bold area rug: If you're trying to figure out how to choose a bold rug for your home, determine what colors already dominate in your room. If you already have dark hardwood floors, or a deep burgundy wall color, then you already have colors to contend with when choosing your perfect bold area rug. Try and choose a rug that has at least one to two colors in your current room, or colors that will easily coordinate with others. Ideally, if you can choose your furniture and area rug together, it will take the hassle out of finding the perfect match later on. Bold patterns with neutral color: When most of think of bold we think bright colors, bold patterns, and over the top graphics. Bold can actually use neutral colors, but have very large and powerful images to make it become the focal point of the room. Rooms that already have bold wall or furniture colors such as red, burgundy, or even turquoise or royal blue tend to have heavy saturation in them. The way to unite the floor with the bold walls is by using bold patterned neutral area rugs. The look is pulled together and not over powering to the eyes. This is a great way to start with a bold color, such as orange, yellow, or red and then bring in pops of color in home decor accessories around the room. The wonderful point about starting with the floor is it gives you a chance to build a space piece by piece, rather than getting overwhelmed with the rug, furniture, walls, and window treatments all at once! Pick where you go bold: While your style to bringing in a bold rug probably goes along with your powerful personality and lifestyle, choose carefully what areas of the room to continue your bold aesthetics. If you choose to do a bold area rug, then keep your furniture neutral with patterned accent pillows. If you choose to have patterned wallpaper, use it as an accent wall adjacent to a wall of windows letting in plenty of light and new focal points. Going bold in your interiors is also about balance and still making your guests feel comfortable in your home. Designing your room around your bold area rug just got a little easier by following these simple tips. Remember the challenge is not what can go with it, but what lifestyle and feeling you want to convey when inhabiting the space. Unusual Push and Store Cabinet Expands When it is Used Posted: 16 Feb 2011 09:54 AM PST Push and Store cabinet was designed by Chung-Tang Ho and emphasizes on a revolutionary idea: furniture that has the ability to expand as it fills up. After all, why keep furniture around, if the shelves are empty? Found on OhGizmo!, the shape-shifting cabinet however doesn’t come with shelves or drawers, but instead features tiny volumes that move forward once objects are pushed inside. It can store just about anything, as long as the objects are not higher or wider than the actual “cupboard”.  The design could be used as a miniature bookcase or a CD case, it is all up to the user and his storing needs. Once the objects are pulled back, the cabinet takes its “normal” shape, making room for other items. How to Change your Interior Walls with Texture Posted: 16 Feb 2011 08:37 AM PST There are millions of colors to choose from for your interior walls, but paint can also be enhanced dramatically with texture. Sure, a caramel tan colored wall may look nice, but once combined with a faux painting technique or a textured wall panel added behind it, the room will take on a whole new dimension! Textured walls have become a growing trend because they can take on a myriad of aesthetics from fine linen to bold geometric forms. If you are looking for a way to change your interior walls, here are a few suggestions for using textures to enhance them. Go bold with texture: One of the beauties of using textures is the ability to spark a mood or drama in a space without having to change out the furnishings, flooring, and architectural details. Textured wall paneling are sold in sheets that can be attached to the wall, and then painted over. Several wall panel varieties come in different colors, or many home owners prefer to leave them white. Depending on the aesthetic you are trying to achieve, bold textured wall panels are a nice option for your interior walls. Give the illusion of texture: While touchable textures are nice, often a more subdued look is desired in a room to make the walls blend in with the decor as opposed to compete with them. Faux finishing is a technique by which different paint colors and glazes are used to create walls that appear to be textured with varying hues and highlights. Depending on the colors you choose and application pressure used a unique look can be achieved on each wall of your room. Use as an accent wall, or use on all walls to envelope the space in varying texture. Walls that look like artwork: Other texture techniques used on interior walls involve painting murals, patterns, and even trompe l’oeil. Trompe l’oeil is an artistic technique that involves painting realistic images and scenes to give the illusion of textures, and realism. This is used on walls to give a room depth, character, or to change the mood of a room dramatically. Walls that have painted to look like artwork can be done by artisans or interior wall professionals. There are also wallpapers and do it yourself murals that mimic hand painted artwork on walls. Whichever is your method for application, the results can be stunning. Break up a monochrome room with texture: If you prefer monochromatic interiors that have little color, texture can be a nice way to break up the eye without getting bored. Fabrics, wall panels, and even joint compound can be used to apply texture to the wall, but can be left monochromatic. This allows the room to still read as a unified color scheme, but also gives the space personality without trying to hard! Your walls just became more exciting with the use of textures. Regardless of your design style, there is a texture that fits perfectly in your home. For inspiration, visit a home improvement store for do it yourself workshops and online tutorials. Many You Tube videos have been made by everyday DIY'ers, and experts that can show you how to create beautiful textured walls. Look through home décor magazines and interiors websites for more inspiration. The more ideas you gather, the better you will be able to mimic the look in your home.
