Impressive Modern Architecture Developed in Relationship to a Gothic Church Posted: 17 Dec 2010 05:46 AM PST 12+ Alder is a remarkable design project belonging to Skylab Architecture. Located in Portland, Oregon, next to a beautiful and imposing Victorian Gothic church, the modern residence is an interesting addition to its neighborhood. Jeff Kovel, founder of Skylab Architecture stated: "The church is amazing. It was a real no-man's-land down here, and one of the things we wanted to do when building 12 + Alder was to feed off the church and to extend the context of [the] architectural experience." The result? A large living room that offers spectacular views of the monument across the street. The new building currently serves as an office for Skylab and two other companies. Moreover, the structure accommodates a 2,000 square-foot crib on the second floor where Kovel’s family lives. Have a look at the photos below and tell us if you like this extreme architecture contrast between 12+ Alder and the Presbyterian Church.

Colourful and Oversized Parquet Flooring Inspired by Nature Posted: 17 Dec 2010 04:37 AM PST Inspiration can be found anywhere, as long as the artist opens his eyes and his heart. Once the idea is captured, all the designer has to do is arrange it in such a manner that it will impress because of its uniqueness. An empty apartment in Stockholm, Sweden, was recreated by Tham & Videgard Architects to capture the wonderful colours of autumn. The artists played with shades of green, yellow, brown, red, orange and pink to create an amazing puzzle on the floors and walls of the apartment. Multicoloured and fun, the oversized parquet flooring was inspired by the proximity of the Humlegarden Park, an amazing display of natural colours that can be seen from the windows of the home. This is also why the apartment was named the Humlegarden Apartment. All the colours were ingeniously arranged in the rooms of the apartment to represent the four seasons: “From winter grey and black, to bright and deep green in summer, to orange, red and yellow during autumn.”

Contemporary Home Dominating an Arid Landscape: Palm Desert Residence Posted: 17 Dec 2010 01:47 AM PST Palm Desert Residence was developed by Heliotrope Architecture in collaboration with Audrey Alberts Design (company in charge of the interior finishes) and is located in Palm Desert, California. We were impressed by the refinement and harmony of its interior design and decided to showcase this project on Freshome to see if you guys share our views. According to the architects,”the house found its inspiration in the classic west-coast ranch house style – a single story structure with low-pitched sloped roofs and an open, asymmetrical floor plan centered around the backyard pool and patio. The house is clad in a protective layer of stone cladding and zinc roofing against the harsh desert sun. Views out to the desert landscape, sunlight, shade, easy outdoor living, grandkids racing about; these are the qualities that most factored into the design.” A few more similar architecture projects and we will certainly change our perspective about living in arid environments. Pets or no pets, every canine enthusiast’s room could be “upgraded” with the help of a cool blueprint rendering of his or her favorite breed. Here is a statement from the Animal Blueprint Company regarding this original decorating idea : “Many people ask us about the idea and how we came up with it in the first place. These dog prints are a combination of our love for dogs and our passion for architecture and modern graphic design.
