Space Maximization in Japan: OH House by Atelier Tekuto Posted: 10 Sep 2010 07:18 AM PDT The OH House gets its name from the family that will inhabit this unusual, but fascinating looking residence. Designed by Atelier Tekuto (Yasuhiro Yamashita) from Japan, this home is 1,5 meters lower than the road in front and was constructed on unleveled terrain. Even though its exterior seems to state that this home isn’t all that roomy, the architects beg to differ: “Upon entering a space, human eyes unconsciously measures distance from perpendicular lines. Thus the OH residence has multi-sided ceilings which surprise people by feeling bigger inside than the outside”. The owners wanted a peaceful and private place which also meant obstructed views of the interior from the street.Yasuhiro Yamashita says that “even though they answered the client’s request to avoid being seen from the outside, they still made the windows as big as possible”. The interior has a few original ideas worth discovering, such as suspended furniture for extra storage space and a dining table that hangs from the ceiling.-via Designboom

IKEA Cats Or How To Allow 100 Felines Test Your Furniture Posted: 10 Sep 2010 06:18 AM PDT After the stunt IKEA pulled in Paris, by allowing subway passengers to freely test their furniture, it is now time for a different type of testing. IKEA UK recently let loose 100 cats in their Wembley store overnight “just to see what happens”. In the video below you can see the crazy felines jump on the furniture, play with each other, fight each other, well…you know what cats are all about. Naturally, when asked to “explain” this event, IKEA only stated that it was an experiment. After all, what is there to explain? This is just another one of their strong promotional actions that will be covered by the media worldwide and bring them even more power and awareness. But isn’t it nice to see how they achieve this creatively?-via Gizmodo

Casa Orquidea, a Hobby Turned into an Exotic Residence Posted: 10 Sep 2010 05:01 AM PDT Designed by AndrĂ©s Remy Arquitectos, Casa Orquidea gets its name from the owner’s passion of growing orchids. This exotic residence is said to have its architecture plans based on the structure of the orchid: the flower, stem and roots. We tried to find out more information on the similarities between this home and the fore-mentioned flower, but in the end we believe that it is all a matter of design. The shape of the residence and even its color palette could perhaps remind one of an orchid. Another objective pursued by the architects was sustainability. This home has integrated systems that guarantee an efficient energy consumption and is provided with natural ventilation. Wide windows ensure natural lighting and great views of the surrounding landscape.

Extreme Small Space Optimization in a 16 Square Meter Apartment Posted: 10 Sep 2010 02:31 AM PDT Who says living in a 16 square meter home can’t be comfortable? This small, but well organized and friendly crib for two! is an extreme example of space maximization in the busy city of Seattle. Did you ever think that a 182 square foot living space could house a living room, a bedroom, hallway and bathroom? Naturally, for such a home to exist, building a “second floor” was necessary. Therefore, the space that in most homes is only used for bunk beds, in this scenario serves as an entertainment room “downstairs” and an unusual bedroom above. Even though this house is beyond small, it is not lacking storage space. We have to say we were surprised to see how well those two bikes fit in there. Owner Steve Sauer says that he had bought most of the furniture from Ikea and he is particularly pleased with the small kitchen table with storage space inside. All in all, Steve stated that his apartment is cozy and not at all cramped: "What I really wanted was one place with exactly what I needed and wanted. Quality is more important than quantity for me, and extra space only a problem". You either love this place or hate it, but whichever it is keep in mind to think out of the box and explore all the living possibilities your home has to offer.-via – Tinyhouseblog

Beautiful Apartment with a Feminine Appeal Posted: 09 Sep 2010 09:44 AM PDT Here is another beautiful and creative apartment that could in time prove to be a valuable source of inspiration when planning the interior design for your own crib. Painted entirely in white, this small home has no more than 54 square meters and includes one room plus kitchen, bathroom and a small hallway. The living room lets out a cozy and inviting feeling with its sofa full of pillows, its fluffy looking carpet and small office area. We have to say we really like the flower arrangements, as they really cheer up the place. All throughout the apartment there can be seen many picture frames, which act as homey decorating items. The kitchen is enriched by wooden furniture and a small white dining table. Light was an important aspect when arranging this small apartment and also the reason why the overall space seems maximized.
