Architect Zaha Hadid Named Dame For Service To Architecture Posted: 19 Jun 2012 06:30 AM PDT Well-known architect Zaha Hadid has recently been awarded the title Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for her services to architecture acknowledged in the Queen's 2012 Birthday Honours list. The Baghdad-born, London-based architect proves that family is a big part of her life and inspired her journey towards this moment. Having been raised in one of Bagdhad's first Bauhaus-inspired homes and encouraged to enroll in London’s Architectural Association School of Architecture, the illustrious architect’s thoughts at the ceremony revolved around this relationship: “It is a tremendous honor for me to receive this award. I would like to thank all my colleagues and clients for their hard work and support. I am delighted that architecture has been recognized in this way. My father went to the London School of Economics in the 1930s, and everything he learned at the time is why I have always leaned towards the UK.” You're reading Architect Zaha Hadid Named Dame For Service To Architecture originally posted on Freshome. Strikingly Clever Layout Making the Most of a 21sqm Swedish Crib Posted: 19 Jun 2012 03:53 AM PDT Provided that the inhabitant is not “burdened” with lots of household belongings, this small, 21 square-meter apartment is just perfect. It is incredible how the designers managed to turn such a small space into an airy and comfortable crib. A wonderful example of Swedish design, the project found on Skeppsholmen is characterized by tastefulness and originality. As you enter, a small hallway divides the bathroom in two functional small interiors. The only room is flooded in natural light from three spectacular windows and features a lovely table for two, an expandable sofa and an extra bed (which means three people can comfortably sleep here!). There is even space for a small cooking area, with storage for tableware and whatnot. No compromises have been made; everything looks great, from the lovely black and white wallpaper to the colorful tiles above the tiny counter-top. Find this small apartment as inspiring as we do? Densely Greened Contemporary Family Residence In Vietnam Posted: 18 Jun 2012 11:39 PM PDT A family with three young children needed an up-to-date residence where family life would revolve around the need for an open, inspiring cluster of modern spaces. Located in the Go Vap District of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, the private residence was completed this year and showcases the customized needs and wishes of this particular family. Vietnamese architecture studio MM++ Architects transposed a sense of calmness and respect in the refreshing layout of the House in Go Vap. Spread over 255 square meters of luscious interior spaces, this light-flooded crib welcomes nature inside through the extensive use of green details. The living zone, kitchen and dining space were designed to be part of a single open space, large enough to accommodate comfortable interactions between family members. Opening both to the outside garden and to an interior garden, this space is linked to the volume containing the children’s bedrooms on the ground floor and the master and guest suites upstairs. This layout and the extensive green space transform the house into an oasis of comfort and provide inhabitants with indirect natural light encouraging high-quality details to stand out.
