| Stiletto Desk by Splinter Works Posted: 20 Sep 2011 12:42 PM PDT British designer/makers Splinter Works will be exhibiting their limited edition Stiletto Desk at the Decorex show in London next week. . Description from the designers: Stiletto can be appropriated for all manner of functions; desk, console table or dressing table. The sinous leg of the table evokes a ‘stacked heel’ stiletto, and is hand sculpted from solid stacked walnut. The iconic ‘red sole’, defines the underside of the table in polished red acrylic, with a French Burr Walnut veneer curved top (as seen here) or with inlaid leather (offering a modern twist on a leather topped writing desk). The drawers are perfectly fitted to glide open without runners, and they have no handles; just a neat hidden finger groove on the underside ensures the seamless hidden functionality of the clean sculptural shape. The drawers are lined in red nubuck leather. Optional cable management can be installed with a conduit for cables to run through the stiletto leg. Custom sizes and finishes available to order. | Nishorgo Oirabot Nature Interpretation Centre Posted: 20 Sep 2011 04:27 AM PDT . The main objectives of this centre, located in a protected forest and nature reserve in Chittagong District in the south of Bangladesh, are nature education and interpretation tours, in an effort to create awareness and promote biodiversity, conservation and eco-tourism. Nishorgo means environment in Bengali, and the central concept driving the project is to cherish the sanctity of nature. The building itself is sensitively placed within the landscape: the reinforced concrete platforms of the 'pavilion shelter' float above the ground on structural walls; the concrete slabs are pierced by tree trunks where necessary, reflecting the project's aim to create as little impact on the environment as possible. The visitor walks up the layers of platforms to a raised level to observe the surroundings. An exhibition area is enveloped in a compositional arrangement of openings framed by wooden lattices, and there is a space for viewing films with walls of exposed, burnt clay brick. | BP Office by Group A Posted: 20 Sep 2011 01:46 AM PDT Group A have designed a new office for BP in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. . Description from the architects: BP Raffinaderij Rotterdam is both the largest and the youngest oil company operating in the Netherlands. The companies strong and dynamic character will be expressed in the design of their new main office. The office will be located close to the BP refinery, but at the same time the safety of BP employees has to be guaranteed. GROUP A has met these demands by designing a building that takes BP’s core values as a point of departure, thus creating a sustainable, safe and healthy environment for dedicated and proud employees. The buildings location on the d’Arcyweg is situated on the edge of the tough, industrial landscape of the refineries and the green, watery landscape of the Brielle lake. Its position right in between these two very different areas bordering the A15 motorway ensures that the location will be a landmark. On the north side the building is hidden in a new artificial dune, while it appears to be ‘breaking’ out of this dune on the south side. By embedding the building into the landscape, safety measures against the explosion hazard posed by the refineries are being complied with. The head office is a dynamic expression of the connection between landscape and building mass. Visit the Group A website – here. Photography by Daria Scagliola & Stijn Brakkee . |
