Geometric Residence in Ottawa Featuring Bold Architectural Elements Posted: 13 May 2011 06:28 AM PDT The Fold Place was designed by Toronto/Ottawa based architectural firm Linebox. Built in Ottawa's Glebe neighbourhood, the two storey house welcomes guests with its eastern side entrance. The architects describe their work: “A cantilevered bay wraps around the corner at the second level, its crisp lines, layering of planes and contrasting materials producing a piece of geometric art. On the opposite elevation, a single storey garage, clad in richly stained pine in contrast to the neutral light-grey stucco of the main volume, is extruded on the angle of the lot.” The pine is also used to beautify several other outside parts of the house and to delimitate the front and back volumes. With their fresh and progressive style, the architects used white walls on the inside in order to visually enlarge the space and two important architectural elements: on the west side of the house, there is a sculpted ebony staircase while on the east side, a light chimney featuring an opaque window caresses a small interior garden with light. These two elements separate the living room from the kitchen/dining area. Glazed doors and windows cut in different shapes and sizes bring natural light in while boldly exposing the interior space to the outside environment. Where privacy was important, narrow but tall windows were placed to avoid indiscreet eyes. Look beyond the architecture and imagine yourself living here. What was the first great thing you noticed?

Alphanumeric Furniture for Creative Interiors: FONTABLE Posted: 13 May 2011 05:26 AM PDT We received a highly interesting design submission from Outdoorz Gallery. Designed by Italian based Alessandro Canepa & Andrea Paulicelli, this incredible collection adds a creative side to any home. Here are some details from the designers: “A new concept in modular furniture FONTABLE is a series of alphanumeric elements reproducing letters A-Z in lower and uppercase and numbers 0-9. The graphic, 3 dimensional 'type' becomes the protagonist of a new language in design which is both versatile and eclectic, allowing us to shape our environment in ever evolving and surprising ways.Produced in a small atelier outside of Milan under the supervision of Alessandro & Andrea the tables are made from steel sheet with lacquered varnishing in white, black and red. Legs are in anodized aluminum and are height adjustable, allowing overlap of table surfaces“. What is your opinion on this unusual alternative for a table?

1900s Brewery in San Francisco Converted into Artist’s Studio Posted: 12 May 2011 10:20 AM PDT Beth Weintraub from The Weintraub Maneuver sent us a unique design conversion. Here are the details we received: “Originally built in 1900 as Enterprise Brewery in the Mission District of San Francisco, the building was in complete disrepair when the current owner took possession in 2005. Remodeled with all high efficiency systems over a three year period, this commercially zoned building now houses an artist studio, event and display space for the artist’s clients, business offices and her residence. Every effort was made to retain and reveal remaining original ingredients including redwood tongue-in-groove walls and floors, as well as several trapdoors fitted with connecting shutes once used to pass beer barrels from the upper level tank, down to the horse drawn wagons below. The building suffered two fires in the 1900′s, causing the exterior details to be damaged beyond repair. The building has a very wide, grand and rather macho entry stair that managed to survive, creating a wonderful old world feeling as you enter what is now a very warm, bright, flowing modern layout throughout this 4500 sq ft space that span three stories. Located in the sunniest part of San Francisco, it sits quietly as the sole surviving structure on a little known dead end alley, surrounded by the most entrepreneurial creatives, gourmet hot spots, and energetic neighborhood in the city.” Enjoy the photos of this amazing conversion and let us know if you are impressed.
