| Tranquility of a Waterfront Residence: The Lojan House in Delaware Posted: 02 Feb 2011 06:20 AM PST Found on Freshbump, Lojan House was designed by Robert Gurney Architect and is located in Ocean View, Delaware, USA. According to the architects, the residence consists of two distinct volumes, connected by a passageway: The east volume is constructed with cement board, the west volume with corrugated siding and the one story connecting space with the ground face concrete block. The exterior material palette is quiet and subdued. Materials are selected for their expected long term durability, ease of installation and initial cost. The impact of the one story horizontal volume facing the street is intended to reflect the scale of neighboring structures while the narrow two story volumes are oriented perpendicular to the street reducing their apparent scale. Amazing views of the waterfront can be spotted from inside this home, due to beautiful wide windows. And speaking of nature, the whole 2400 square feet building features expansive openings towards a picturesque garden. ( Photographs byAnice Hoachlander|HD Photo)

| Oak Wood from French Wine Barrels Transformed into Original Chair Posted: 02 Feb 2011 03:47 AM PST We just received this amazing chair developed by Stil Novo Design. According to their description, this solid stool is entirely made of recycled white oak wood from French wine barrels. The Emperor Seat is a perfect combination of practicality, comfort and sophistication; it can easily be integrated in any room of the house as a unique and handy piece of home decor. By using the natural arch of a barrel stave we are able to create this particularly attractive silhouette of definite oriental flavor. The top and the sides are stained with the red wine previously held in the barrel and complemented with a rich 'cherry chocolate' finish. The Emperor Seat measurements are about 12"X16" (top) and approx. 14" height (each barrel stave is different so the size is approximate). The intriguing Emperor Chair is available on Etsy and costs $185.

| Contemporary Round Apartment with Astounding Skyline Views of Sydney Posted: 02 Feb 2011 02:43 AM PST After seeing what Stanic Harding Architecture did with an amazing apartment seen here on Freshome, we took another look at their portfolio and found another astonishing apartment in Darling Point, Sydney. After having been stripped clean, the whole apartment was redesigned to take advantage of the breathtaking views of the city, the harbor and the tree canopies of Darling Point. A beautiful walnut lining delimitates the core space and sliding doors make the connection between individual rooms. The combined living and dining offer a wonderful view of the skyline and the Rushcutters Bay. The architects better describe this project: “The existing air conditioning cabinet was clad in curvaceous metallic silver paneling to create niches for display, storage, a fold down bar and housing for the sound and audio visual equipment. This once unsightly element was now a very useful space maker, separating TV area from general living/dining. A splayed cast plaster bulkhead was installed in the general living space to enhance the curve theme, and conceal air conditioning grills while the general ceiling plane stays shy of the edge. The curved walnut paneling to the core is designed to contrast with the glazed perimeter and to anchor the occupant.” The core part of the apartment houses storage space and a laundry room, keeping the space private, while mirror paneling opens up the space a little more. Unusual and spacious, this apartment is a luxurious retreat from the stressful everyday life.

| Check Your Sight in 3D: The 3D Eye Chart Pillow by Heather Lins Posted: 02 Feb 2011 01:02 AM PST The 3D Eye Chart Pillow was created by newcomer designer Heather Lins and was showcased at the New York International Gift Fair this weekend. According to the official project description, the 3-D effect is achieved through anaglyph printing—cyan and red screen-printing inks that correspond with the glasses provided. The pillow is quite original and can be of great effect in a home theater for example. But we imagine it is not so much fun in a common bedroom, where the 3D glasses are optional, as looking at the uncommon pillow could be pretty tiresome to the eyes. The design is 100 % cotton and screen printed by hand with water-based inks. You can buy this product online here, for $95 (glasses included). So if you ever felt like checking your sight in 3D, here’s the solution.

| Charming Contemporary Twin Buildings: Alki Townhomes in Seattle Posted: 01 Feb 2011 11:29 PM PST Alki Townhomes is a modern project designed by Johnston Architects and located in a vibrant neighborhood in Seattle. Situated close to the beach boardwalk, the two charming twin residences can easily take in the surrounding atmosphere, as they feature impressive glass facades. Moreover, the roof terraces are open towards the city and offer great panoramic views. The interiors are warm and inviting, just perfect for relaxation. We particularly like the rooms located right beneath the roofs with their unusual geometry. Here is more from the architects: The two units range from 1,800 to 2,100 SF. Each is three-bedroom with two master suites, and is equipped with a two-car garage. To the north, south and west, the rooftop decks capture views of the Puget Sound, Seattle cityscape and the beach community below. With spacious living spaces and quality finishes such as glulam beam framing, bamboo floor and fir cabinetry, the Alki Townhouses are both beautiful and practical.

| Exquisite Modern Residence with Original Architecture Details:Chicken Point Cabin Posted: 01 Feb 2011 10:28 AM PST Chicken Point Cabin. is a remarkable modern residence designed by Olson Kundig Architects and located in Northern Idaho, USA. According to the architects, the idea for the cabin is that of a lakeside shelter in the woods—a little box with a big window that opens to the surrounding landscape. The cabin's big window-wall (30 feet by 20 feet) opens the entire living space to the forest and lake. Materials are low maintenance—concrete block, steel, concrete floors and plywood—in keeping with the notion of a cabin, and left unfinished to naturally age and acquire a patina that fits in with the natural setting. The method used to open the window consists of an intriguing pulley system, absolutely fascinating to watch in action. This leads to the whole house being open towards the stunning surrounding views.
The interior design is impeccable and highly contemporary: Strong blocks of color help to define space and direct the eye. Texture in furnishings provides a soft but strong counterpoint to the hard, raw material palette. Custom tables using plywood and polyurethane create a direct connection to the architecture while providing durability and function. Some of the unique interior features include the custom continuous steel pipe fireplace, the wood slab work surface supported by a truck suspension spring, and the custom stainless steel bathroom sink.
