Fun and Functional Night Light Table for Soothing Bedrooms

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 07:22 AM PST

Night Light Table was developed as a result of a collaboration between designers Charlie Crowther-Smith and Richard Bannister. You are looking at an original product that can create a subtle, yet strong effect in any bedroom: “We wanted to design something that omitted an ambient glow within any room as well as being functional furniture.” The result- an intriguing piece of furniture made from walnut legs and an oak top that serves both as a practical night table as well as a cool decorative item. Books, magazines, CDs and other small objects can be placed within this uncommon night table. Glowing all through the night, it can be a true friend for those who have fear of the dark. Pretty creative, don’t you agree ?

Uncommon Contemporary Residence Surrounded by Oak Trees in Florida

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 03:42 AM PST

Casa Grove was designed by MATEU Architecture and is a great example of modern architecture that takes advantage of its natural environment. Here is a short description from the architects: Casa Grove I is located on a lush tree filled lot that fronts on a heavily traveled avenue in the north part of Coconut Grove, Florida.  The lot is forty feet wide by one hundred seventy feet deep and containing several huge oaks that were preserved.  The courtyard design allows for the main public spaces to be buffered from the traffic and street noise by a front structure that contains the carport and bedroom/studio above.  The entry sequence is such that the side setback is used as a filter to the house, deliberately extending the arrival sequence, making a small lot appear larger. We find the interior design of this residence quite elegant and appealing. It is truly inspiring to see how subtle wood elements contribute to the overall modern style of this home, awarding it with a noble touch.

Delightful Swedish Crib or How to Make the Most of a Small Apartment

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 02:40 AM PST

In this post we would like to showcase a fabulous 1,5 room apartment which brings tribute to Scandinavian design. This highly functional crib stretches over a surface of only 42 square meters, yet it does not seem to lack many things. The living room is airy and bright with windows looking out onto the quiet neighborhood. During the last renovation, the living room and kitchen were united, which contributes to an overall feeling of space. A rustic brick wall acts as a “decorative” border between the two rooms and ensures a high level of originality. The walls are painted in a white hue that provides a neutral base for decorating. Beautiful color contrasts are achieved by the gray sofa and flooring. To the left of the hall and directly adjacent to the living room, an extremely convenient and comfortable sleeping space can be observed. Two of the walls are painted in white, while the third is a beautifully patterned wallpaper in pleasant tones. This special alcove is greatly appreciated in a crib of this type, giving the feeling of a  perfectly planned small apartment.

Wine Haus, a Practical Cabinet with Various Storage Possibilities

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 01:38 AM PST

Wine Haus was designed by company Build LLC and is an interesting looking storage cabinet with plenty of unusual features. Here is the information we received from the designers: “The clean lines and formal geometry of Wine Haus allow for storage of up to 18 bottles. Two generous drawers and a cabinet bay with movable shelves also conceal all those pesky bar accessories.  The look and function of Wine Haus was inspired by Scandinavian design, known for its minimal aesthetic and sensible function. Made of quarter-sawn, hand selected, sustainable walnut veneer and aluminum, Wine Haus is a durable and timeless piece of furniture. The cabinet box is finished on all four sides so that it can be a piece of sculpture within the room or situated against a wall. A satin lacquer gives the cabinet box a resilient finish without glossing over the gorgeous natural wood texture. The aluminum frame raises the cabinet off the floor for ease of cleaning and a design-forward look.

Each drawer is outfitted with Blum motion, soft-close hardware. The aluminum door and drawer pulls are custom made and can only be found on SPD furniture. Edges are finished with a 1/8" solid edge-banding for crisp profiles and longevity.”  Wine Haus is available for purchasing online at Etsy for the striking cost of $4 800.

How to Update the Exterior of your Home on a Budget

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 12:22 AM PST

Even though the interiors of your home is where you live and play, the exterior of your home is what makes your house 'shine' to the neighbors! Although, many think to update the exterior of your home requires a big budget. On the contrary, details and overall curb appeal will boost the exterior of your home without having to spend a few paychecks for great results. Regardless of the time of year, there are always exterior improvements that you can do.

  • Curb appeal can get you far: Before you spend a dime on your physical house, look at your yard, landscaping, sidewalk, and front entryway. In all of these areas, a few hours of yard work in tidying up your property can go a long way. Cut and trim grass or rake leaves and clear fallen tree debris around the yard. Conceal trash cans and recycle bins out of eye sight from the general public. Stand back across the street and see if new landscaping, mulching, or just general sweeping and tidying up the yard will make your home look better.
  • Painting can go a long way: Depending on what your budget is, painting can give you a lot of bang for your buck. Whether you paint the entire house – for a stucco or wood siding home, or if you stick to the trim around windows and doors. Painting can give your home a whole new look without having to spend a lot. When painting don't forget picket fences around your yard, trim around the eaves of the roof, and replacing old gutters and downspouts may catapult the appeal of the exterior of your home.

  • Updating the details: Once you have tackled the large extent of your home, updating details such as lighting fixtures, shutters, and house numbers can be affordable and lend to a beautiful exterior of your home. Front entry door hardware and house mounted mailboxes are also a great place to start. Consider using new metal finishes, or different decorative styled lighting fixtures at your garage and/or front entry. Similarly to changing plumbing fixtures in your bathroom, exterior details will add the crowning touches for minimal amount of cost.

  • Add charm: The strongest appeal to any home is adding bits of charm that welcome you from the street. Add individualized details that will make your home unique from the neighbors. Window boxes of artificial or real plants outside of windows, or adding a sitting bench and subtle walkway lighting can boost the exterior appeal instantly. If you have a large front porch, add furniture, outdoor area rugs, and wall décor to bring the indoors out.

The exterior of your home deserves the same attention to detail as the interior. Although, we forget about it once we are living inside the house, exterior and curb appeal are essential for neighborhood appeal, and trying to sell your home. Remember, your entire home is one entity and for minimal cost you can update the exterior, and feel good about it. Who knows, you may inspire your neighbors to do the same!
