Reflecting the sky’s serenity of a summer evening, with its ground-burned-by-the-sun sweet scent, the house in Villarcayo, Spain, is a nice place to live, if you plan to escape from the cluttered big city life. The one floor residence spreads over 206 square meters, mixes in an interesting way, concrete and wood, without giving you the feeling of a cold, unexpressive house. The straight lines, the rectangular shape, the floor-to-ceiling windows create an airy environment, perfect for someone who seeks serenity, light and simplicity. The project was designed by Pereda PĂ©rez Arquitectos and defined in 2012. A modern space, enhancing the feeling of tranquility: this is what the house in Villarcayo is all about. The central part accommodates a wide open space social area, connected to the courtyard, while “the margins” are dedicates to the more private areas, such as the bedroom, the study room or the bathrooms. The furniture seems very much integrated in the structure of the house. The concrete ceiling finds its reflection into the flooring. Everything is straight, rigid yet, complex. Its simple, monolithic aspect promotes the idea of formal simplicity. The coherence of every single detail is simply striking. Basically, this is what makes it so interesting and appealing. How do you find this house in Villarcayo? Do you agree that less is more? You're reading Less is More: Beautiful And Simple Home Designed in Villarcayo, Spain originally posted on Freshome. Milan-based Inoda+Sveje Design Studio developed an elegant seating project entitled IS Sofa. The original shape of the unit and its vivid blue color upholstery caught our attention and we couldn’t help ourselves from sharing it further. Interesting to observe from every stand point, the design captivates due to its unexpected curves and seamless blend of materials.
According to the designers, “the organic shape of the IS sofa is composed of a continuous line connecting its generous CNC cut wooden armrests, with that of its padded cushion back and seat“. Produced by miyazaki chair factory co., ltd., the simple form combines its contrasting materials of hard and soft in an uninterrupted flow of contours. Wooden armrest and soft cushions ensure a comfortable seating experience for the stylish, yet robust and durable unit . Its original shape makes it a great focal point for any living room with a twist.

Envisioned as a cozy private resort by Stanley Tham of KNQ Associates, this four-story house is nestled in a quiet enclave of Katong, Singapore. In many of the rooms, tall windows all around bring in ample day lighting into the space. Hence, the objective of this entire remodeling exercise is as much about maximizing the available footprint for the family of 7 (plus a domestic helper) as building further on this inherent architectural feature to create an uncomplicated, airy interior throughout.
With that vision in mind, the designers have deliberately kept the material palette simple, relying instead on a minimal number of colors to accentuate the tones, textures and shapes of the furniture or furnishings. This also allows key elements in the rooms to stand out more on their own and shine. This theory extends into the bedrooms and the basement level (which functions as a big activities/ entertainment room cum art gallery where the art student daughter’s own works hang). As an example, in the master suite, visual interest is created through the juxtaposition and contrast of texture and surfaces, rather than through pattern, which can interrupt the visual flow of the room.
In one of the childrens’ rooms, contrast in shapes and colors, rather than fanciful, over-the-top graphics or patterns that so typically define kids’ rooms, provide the subtle playful touch to the room. A house has to be user friendly for the owner in years to come. Overall, ample concealed storage is provided at all areas to cater to the demands of a relatively large family. A careful attention to detailing ensures a seamless look where the storage units gel into the environment, looking more like walls than bulky cabinets.
